Excellent for Ski Touring

Black Diamond Pure Carbon Ski Pole

Black Diamond Pure Carbon Ski Pole

Rating for this product: 5 May 3, 2012

Bought these poles just before departing on the Haute Route this spring, and I was very happy with them. Only slightly lighter than my previous BD adjustable poles, but these seemed quite a bit more rigid, and I really liked the feel of the second grip point for ski touring.

Great choice for both resort and touring

Arc'teryx Gamma SK Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 16, 2012

I've used these pants both for resort skiing on both mild and cold days (with a base layer) and for ski touring (most recently, the Haute Route in April, without the base layer). Very breathable pants; I never felt clammy in these even skinning uphill all day in the sun. The lack of side zips didn't both me. The lower front pockets on the legs are perfect for storing glove liners or a handkerchief. Excellent choice for both inbounds and out.

Great pack for overnight

Deuter Guide 35+ Backpack - 2140cu in

Rating for this product: 4 July 17, 2011

Bought this pack for a trip to the Swiss Alps with two planned overnights at mountain huts. The size turned out to be just about ideal for that relatively light load. Ice axe carry worked very easily, but the rope attachment on top of the pack would not snug down very tight for an 8 mm x 30m rope. It carried fine, however, since the top flap holds the rope securely in place....the rope attachment is simply to keep it attached when you flip it out of the way to access the cargo compartment.

Hard to judge durability after just a week, but the build quality strikes me as very sound.

I plan to do some multi-day ski-touring next season, and this may be just the ticket for that.

First pair of skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Rating for this product: 4 June 30, 2011

The BD Ascension Nylon STS were the first set of skins I've owned, so I can't compare them to other brands. Chose them because they seem pretty ubiquitous, and I trust BD stuff. I trimmed them myself, and you can certainly tell which one I did first. Despite my rough cutting on the first, the skins do the job well, easy on & off, and the "cheaters" and storage bag that are included make them easy to handle. After a season of use, I just purchased a second pair for some new boards, so I guess that's the best possible endorsement!

Highly Recommended

K2 Apache Coomba Alpine Ski

K2 Apache Coomba Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2009

I've only had the chance to ski these for a couple days, as I bought them late in the season to take advantage of the great sale prices. Mounted them with Marker Barons, mounted 2 cm forward as recommended. I found them to be surprisingly quick and responsive as an inbounds ski....not quite the "cornering like you're on rails" feeling I get from my Apache Recons, but good enough that I think I'd pull this ski out of the quiver if there was any chance of good pow off-piste. Because boy, do they float in the pow! This is my first truly fat ski, so I can't compare them to other fat boys, but they sure were a fun ride. More to follow next season.

Bulky but warm...and it lasts

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 20, 2009

I've owned this fleece for over ten years. I know it's changed somewhat, but I can sure testify to its durability. Pretty bulky, so not the best choice for active wear, but a great layer when you're standing around in the cold.

A little tight in the shoulders, but a good shell

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Men's

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 20, 2009

This is my go-to shell for daily wear in Fall and Winter weather. It's a little tight through the shoulders, but with just a good base layer underneath, it's very comfortable. Very windproof.

Great soft shell

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Women's

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

I bought this for my wife as a gift, her first soft shell jacket. She loves it! It has a nice feel, is sufficiently windproof and waterproof for most daily wear, and she likes the cut and the sleeve length. I did opt to go up a size, since other reviewers said this jacket runs small...good advice.
