Odd cut, nice material

prAna Nemesis Knicker - Men's

prAna Nemesis Knicker - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 June 30, 2009

Up-front disclosure: I returned these because of the cut.

The cut on these just seemed a little odd (almost a flare or something towards the bottom). I would recommend the Kuhl long short instead. These just weren't my style, if such a thing is even applicable for technical gear.

All that said, the material on these knickers is very nice and they were certainly long enough, even though I am a tall guy.

Not long, a little tight

Arc'teryx Spotter Long Short - Men's

Arc'teryx Spotter Long Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 June 30, 2009

Up-front disclosure: I returned these because the fit was poor.

I'm a tall guy (6'4") and these hit several inches above my knee. They are also tight and constricted my movement. In short: the opposite of the product description above.

Good pants, bad quality control

Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant - Men's

Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 30, 2009

I'm essentially duplicating my review of the Alpine Utility pant, since they are so similar.

Overall, I love these pants, although it took me a while to acquire the right size. These are a little less stiff (and therefore probably less durable) than the Alpine Utility pant, although they are still much better than most pants out there. They are quite comfortable and are probably fine for most uses. If you're going to be kneeling a lot or climbing around on things (construction, etc), go for the Alpine Utility. Otherwise, these are perfect. One thing: the Freestone color on Backcountry.com is much darker than the reality. Mountain Khakis' website has much more accurate colors.

That said, Mountain Khakis has some serious quality control issues. I have ordered several pairs of pants from them in a variety of different styles, and the lengths have varied by as much as three inches (all were ordered as the same size). One pair was so short that I called MK directly to complain. They helped me exchange at no charge, but I would have preferred that the pants were right in the first place. They have a good product, but I doubt I would buy another pair given the hassle.

My rating is:
Pants: 5 stars
Mountain Khakis: 2 stars

Overall, I love these pants, although it took me a while to acquire the right size. They are very durable, but much more comfortable than my Carhartts. However, Mountain Khakis has some serious quality control issues. Great socks, run big

The North Face Ribbed Sock - Men's

The North Face Ribbed Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 1, 2009

I really like these socks. Not too thick, not too thin. They do run a touch big, so if you're near the dividing line, go with the smaller.

Great sock, a little thick

Patagonia Lightweight Everyday Sock

Patagonia Lightweight Everyday Sock

Rating for this product: 4 May 1, 2009

I love these socks, although they are a little bit thick for true everyday wear. As spring has fully set in and things have started warming up, my feet have been getting a little bit too toasty. I'd place them more as "every winter day" wear. Fit true to size.

Great socks, a little pricey

X-Socks Air Travel Smart Compression Sock

X-Socks Air Travel Smart Compression Sock

Rating for this product: 4 May 1, 2009

These socks are fantastic for flying. As previously pointed out, they don't compress as much as medical compression socks, but they are just tight enough to keep your feet/legs from getting swollen. The material is fairly thin and breathes nicely. Fits true to size.

My one complaint is that at $35, they're a little pricey.

Overall: 5 stars for function, 3 for price.

Great softshell

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 6, 2009

This is a great softshell for anything but the coldest times of year. I've used this jacket for almost everything, from hiking to running around town. It retains just enough heat to keep me from getting chilled, but still breathes when I get out into the sun. I looked at a lot of different softshells, and this one is by far the best. I wouldn't recommend it for mid-season skiing (Dec-Feb)-it's a little bit too lightweight-but it's the perfect weight for any other time of year. It blocks the wind pretty well, but not 100%. I'm a pretty tall guy with a more athletic build, and the XL fits perfectly.

A little snug, way too long

Backcountry.com Backcountry Logo T-Shirt - Men's

Backcountry.com Backcountry Logo T-Shirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 March 23, 2009

I'm a tall guy, and this shirt was way too long, even after some pretty aggressive washing. It has a pretty snug fit, which is hit-or-miss depending on your preferences (I have no problem with it, but I'm not sure I would enjoy it if I gained 10lbs). The quality of the material and colors are great, but I can't recommend it because of the length. I'll hem slacks, but a t-shirt?

Tramdock.com Tramdock Logo T-Shirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 March 23, 2009

This shirt is the same as the Backcountry.com t-shirts, just with different artwork. Unfortunately, just like the Backcountry.com shirts, it is way too long. The quality of the material is great, but I would not recommend it based on the fit.

Fantastic Jacket

Scapegoat McLean Jacket - Men's

Scapegoat McLean Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2009

This jacket is absolutely fantastic. It has a great cut, high-quality materials, and is the perfect weight. "brynb" is right–it's the perfect jacket for San Francisco (although I've used it comfortably in cities all across the US). It nice enough so that I can wear it to work, but also fits in perfectly running around on the weekends. I wouldn't use it as a ski (or other sports) jacket, but it's not really meant for that.

I bought the gray one, and the sleeves do extend on the pinky side, although you can fold them in where they're held in place with small magnets. The interior phone pocket on my jacket does have a velcro strap. brynb has done a great job describing all the details–beyond the above, my experience is the same.

My only complaint (and this is really a nitpick) is that the phone pocket is just a little bit too small to easily slip an iPhone into.

I've been looking for a good fall-winter-spring jacket for a while, and this one fits the bill.
