Osprey Packs Aether 70 Backpack- 4089-4638cu in
April 4, 2010
Ariel 75 was the winner. Just enough space--including the camera gear --for my long weekend trips. The 67 might work with a smaller cooking system or tent than I have though; strapping the canister to the outside would also work but I decided against that because of steep scrambling situations I find myself in 50% of the time! Good luck longhiker.

Osprey Packs Aether 70 Backpack- 4089-4638cu in
April 4, 2010
I ended up going with the Ariel 75, the 72L IS PERFECT if packed correctly. For full winter gear though 4nights out, you might be hard pressed to fit all you need for a mountaineering trip; with skis lashed outside they will limit your stuffability in the main compartment I would think. I have a 1.5 man light winter tent, a Marmot Pinnacle bag (15 deg. 800fil) plus the puffy clothing and big cooking system for the cold, shovel, two pads etc. That load fits just right for 2 nights, but beyond that it might get dicey. If you can make it work though, more power to ya. The versatility and comfort of this pack line is simply awesome!

Marmot Eos 1-Person 3-Season Tent
March 26, 2010
Thanks for the reply! I was wondering how durable the mesh version of the Hubba would compare the HP version with solid walls. Is it a huge difference, or with proper care does the fine mesh on all these tents hold up over more than 1-2 seasons of 20 nights or so?

Marmot Pinnacle Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down
March 25, 2010
Hey, what size compression sack do you use? I've been using a size M Sea to Summit eVent DryComp bag, and my Pinnacle gets smaller than it's stuff sack, but only by about 1/3 I'd say. I'm putting it in foot first, zipper partialy open to allow air to escape. Do I need a smaller comp sack or is that just about as small as it gets?

Would the small @ 67L be big enough for a Garcia canister and 3-5 nights in the High Sierra?
I have fairly light weight stuff, but I like to use a 1 or 2 person tent on solo outings which takes up space and a 70-200mm zoom lens for my dslr. I am torn between this size and the women's small on the Ariel 75 @ 72 L.

Marmot Eos 1-Person 3-Season Tent

Eos v. MSR Hubba
So I am in the market for a fairly light 1p tent and have narrowed my choices down. I realize from the comments that the Eos has less headroom, but at 5'5" and 120lbs, I don't think space will be an issue. I'm more concerned with: 1) stability in windy conditions, particularly the High Sierra; 2) Ease of setup, especially in adverse conditions. Thoughts?

The North Face Scythe Fleece Jacket - Men's
February 18, 2010
This is more on the slim side by design. It was meant to be worn under a technical shell for alpine conditions, and it really does insulate, breathe and stretch well. I would go with a medium given your height. I am 5'5" 120lbs with a 35-36ish chest and the small fits me just about right with very little go below the waistline. With your extra 5 inches I am pretty sure the small would leave your belly bare and cold!

The North Face Scythe Fleece Jacket - Men's
February 15, 2010
It's been a long time since I tried on an R4 but if memory serves me right, it was a tight throat fit under the chin, but I have a large neck relative to my size (s) ).
I own the Scythe and love it, but the collar is....interesting. It is high, just about below my lips in the front, but it extends out with a big gap between the zipper/collar and your chin (unless you are Jay Leno ;). It tends to fold/flop down and not really cover unless an outer shell is propping it up in my experience. Hope that helps.

Simmering Ability vs. Pocket Rocket or Brunton Raptor and Flex
How precise is the flame control? I'm looking to get one of these for ultralight outings this summer but was hoping to pick up one with more than just pure boiling capability if possible.

Elysium Discontinued?
So, I was hoping to order the yellow in a small and couldn't find it anywhere, and it is no longer listed on TNF's website; is it a dead end product?
If anyone in the industry or from bc.com could enlighten me as to this jacket's fate for 2010 that would be great!

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's
January 25, 2010
I know it probably would be a bit big (given the size chart) but at 5'5--long arms but a short torso-- and 120 lbs , would a small be baggy given the famous Arc'terx fit? I have the Marmot Exum for reference, and it fits well lengthwise but has a bit of excess around my chest and arms which isn't bad but I am always looking for a better fit and I am tempted by the burlier fabric on the Beta AR. Anybody?

Mountain Hardwear Amalgam Jacket - Men's
December 30, 2009
Is this the successor to the Xenon? It sure seems similar, with Paclite under 70d fabric and those low pockets. If so, why is it now classified as light and fast rainwear vs. an iceclimbing/mountaineering jacket like the Xenon was? Just curious...

The North Face Pamir WindStopper Jacket - Men's

Ok, I was surprised to see that there was no small option so I checked on other sites and no one offers a small. Why? Did TNF just give up that market? Very disappointing....

K2 Apache Coomba Alpine Ski
October 26, 2009
So I'm looking for a deep pow, backcountry oriented ski that is fairly manageable for my skinny ass frame: 5'5, 120 lbs. I'm pretty aggressive on groomers but I've only been hitting heavy pow with narrow equipment thus far (2002 160cm 1080's) and it isn't cutting it. Would the 167 be a manageable size for me since this is a fairly light ski? Any other suggestions?

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

How would this thing handle windy High Sierra nights at around 9,000 + feet? I have the MSR reactor which is awesome but a tad bulky for my tastes and am very tempted by this little thing!
