Volkl Katana Alpine Ski

I have the 2010s in 197. The guys at Teton Village Sports suggested mounting them +2 at least. The center line is pretty far back on the 2010s. Mine are perfect

Better than a MULE

Osprey Packs Raptor 6 Hydration Pack - 360cu in

Osprey Packs Raptor 6 Hydration Pack - 360cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 3, 2010

I can't say enough about this pack -- 10x better than my old Camelback MULE. The rigid reservoir is perfect, no more uncomfortable bubble on your lower back. There is enough room in the pack for some food, spare tube, pump, multi tool, tire levers and car keys. Sweet separate pocket for phone / music player. The magnetic bite valve attachment takes some getting used to, but once you figure it out you'll wonder how you lived without it. I found the hip belt to be too long, but was pretty easy to modify. The 2 liter capacity is great for shorter rides, but for all day epics I'd suggest moving up to a 3-liter version.

Works great

Yakima Fork Lift Bike Carrier

Yakima Fork Lift Bike Carrier

Rating for this product: 5 May 3, 2010

Installed two of the racks on a 2010 4Runner Trail in about 20 minutes. The bikes were held securely in the rack, no issues driving 75mph on the highway. I moved the front bar of my cargo rack all the way forward, and can open the back of the SUV without the rear door hitting the tires of the bikes (had a Yeti 575 and a Specialized hardtail on it). This is an easy solution for people who want to use factory-installed roof racks. Don't forget to buy the SKS lock cores.

CamelBak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack - 520cu in

CamelBak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack - 520cu in

Rating for this product: 1 April 7, 2010

I bought an '09 MULE at the end of last summer on sale to replace my favorite hydration pack (an older MULE, maybe '03 model). I could not be more dissapointed. After a number of rides last fall, and again this spring, I just couldn't get the pack to sit comfortably on my back. I never had this problem with my old one. After a lot of fiddling with the straps, placement of spare tubes, etc. I think I figured out the problem. The new zippered bladder access (instead of the old slide-in bladder) is made wrong. By adding the zipper to the top and one side only, the pack is not symmetrical (the zipper is larger than the stitching on the other side). So my pack is ALWAYS slightly shifted when the bladder is full. (It also seems to me that the bladder is slightly too big for the compartment, which makes it hard to center).
I went to REI and checked out the 2010s, and it seems the problem is still there. I'm replacing my MULE with a new Osprey Raptor...what a waste of money.

Sweet

Hestra Cloud Nine Glove

Hestra Cloud Nine Glove

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2010

picked these up on Tramdock, and they are sweet. The leather is super soft, they are really warm, and they look cool. Obviously white will get dirty, but that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

BC.com is shipping the 2.1 version

Ortovox S1 Avalanche Transceiver

Ortovox S1 Avalanche Transceiver

Rating for this product: 4 December 7, 2009

I just ordered this for the upcoming season, and was pleased to recieve the newest version (2.1), which has slightly different colors on the inside (the metallic looking color), and is obviously the most recent software update.
See a picture here -- http://en.ortovox.com/transceiver/s1.html
I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I would say that my only complaint out of the box is that the neoprene cover on the harness is VERY tight, so it's a bit difficult to snap the buckle closed. Maybe it stretches a bit with time....

Not great

Backcountry.com Shift Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

Backcountry.com Shift Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 December 4, 2009

I bought this for my wife, because she loves the Men's Shift that I own. Overall, I'm disappointed. Fit is very small (I know, others have said the same thing). The fabric is relatively thin/lightweight relative to the Men's Shift Softshell from last year. If you want a VERY lightweight softshell with a hood, then this is the one. If you want something with a bit more heft, look elsewhere.

Pretty good

Smith Interlock Spoiler Sunglasses - Polarized

Smith Interlock Spoiler Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 June 8, 2009

Great lenses, look cool, good coverage. I'm only giving them 4 stars because I found the fit on the bridge of the nose to be slightly tight (an issue I haven't had with any other sunglasses). They got a bit uncomfortable after wearing them on a boat for 5 hours. But for running/hiking/biking, these can't be beat -- stay in place perfectly.

Smith Prodigy Goggle

May 27, 2009

Go to the smith website and there is a lot of detail. Platinum mirror is one of the darkest regularly available lenses (but I still ride with them 99% of the time); Ignitor is a bit lighter with more contrast; Sensor is the lightest of the "Mirror" lenses. RC36 is sorta like the old-school orange/rose tint lense.

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski

May 27, 2009

I'm 6'2, 185lbs (w/o ski gear), and would never go shorter than the 191s. This kinda depends on how aggressively you ski, but if you like to give it, then you need to step up to the bigger size. Next time you're in a tram line or gondy line at a resort with a lot of good skiers (Snowbird / Jackson), take a look around. All the rippers have skis that are about as tall as they are, sometimes bigger.

Best choice for ex-racers

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 May 27, 2009

These things rip. If you are a former racer, grab a pair of 191s and don't look back. They turn like a GS ski in the groomers, and the width gives them great float in the pow. Definitely my go-to ski for almost any condition.

Scott P4 Alpine Ski

Scott P4 Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 May 27, 2009

Got these off SAC in 191s, great flotation on powder days, surprisingly good on the groomers. Twin tips make them ski a bit shorter. I mounted them with center boot over the arrow on the sidewall...seemed to work out pretty well. I still grab the Mantra's for most days, but these are a fun addition to the quiver

Salomon 2 Pair Padded Ski Bag 180

Salomon 2 Pair Padded Ski Bag 180

Rating for this product: 5 January 28, 2005

You get what you pay for. The padding isn't very thick, and for some reason there is only one set of straps inside this two-pair bag. If you want a serious bag to take on the plane, get a DaKine.

DAKINE Concourse Double Ski Bag

DAKINE Concourse Double Ski Bag

Rating for this product: 5 December 31, 2004

This bag is super nice, it has straps inside to keep your skis from banging around and a separate pole compartment. I just took it on vacation and ended up bringing an extra pair of skis home with me--and actually fit all three pairs inside. If you take your skis on a plane, then this is the bag you should get.
