Wild Country Oxygen Keylock Quickdraw

Wild Country Oxygen Keylock Quickdraw

Rating for this product: 4 June 22, 2009

They have everything you need. I didn't want to go wiregate on the super off chance they could get snagged on the bolt. They are light, great clipping action and the with the key lock don't worry about getting them snagged when cleaning.

I liked them enough to buy them, review them, and pick up more.

Sigg Traveler Water Bottle - 1.0 L Do Not Use

Sigg Traveler Water Bottle - 1.0 L Do Not Use

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2009

There is one main reason not to buy this product. You don't carry and drink enough water to need to spend 20 bucks on a container for it. So if thats the case, you really should be drinking more water, but if thats not going to happen move on.

If it is something you are debating then do it! The container is bomber, easy to carry, keeps the liquid temperature well and doesn't allegedly poison you like plastic water bottles do. So there you go. I have one and have used it more than enough already to warrant 20 bucks.

Sigg Lifestyle Water Bottle - Screw Top - 1.0L

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2009

My fiance bought this for me as a christmas present and I use it every day. I take it to work, the rock gym, and when Im lucky enough to get outside. Someone said its fragile, but mine has been bomber. I have a little dink from a far drop but it still works great. It keeps the temperature well and I have used it more than enough to warrant the price and will use it for years to come. I recommend. Big time.

Metolius Bouldering Bucket w/ Brush and Chalk

Metolius Bouldering Bucket w/ Brush and Chalk

Rating for this product: 3 March 16, 2009

This bouldering bag set up comes with everything you need when getting started. The yellow is easy to see when out at the crag (less likely to leave it behind) the brush works well enough, and the chalk is the kinds I always use.

Cons-The brush is small, you are going to want to get something bigger as well. The way it closes up leaves you shooting a stream of chalk out the top like a whale blow hole ( insert funny joke here) which gets all over your other gear. I started with this bag and was happy I got it, but have since moved on.

Great Shoe for beginners or vets alike

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe- 2009

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe- 2009

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2009

This was my first climbing shoe. It was suggested to me as a good beginner shoe in that it performs well and is also priced well. As a beginning climber you will wear down the rubber of your first pair of shoes quickly as you get use to foot placement. So you don't want to go all out on your first pair.

Secondly, as far as sizing goes. When I first purchased them I went with street shoe size 10.5 and they worked well. They were a little tight at first but stretch out slightly after warming up and sweating in them a bit so keep that in mind. Also, after a month or so of climbing when my feet adjusted to wearing tight shoes I realized I had dead space in them when curling/pointing my toes. So I exchanged them for a full size smaller. I also suggest you do this. Exchange once you are comfortable with going smaller. Making your shoes too tight at first will make climbing no fun.

My favorite shoe of all time.

Evolv Pontas Climbing Shoe

Evolv Pontas Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2009

These are my go to shoes. Like with other evolves, if its your first pair you want to go with your street size shoe. However, as your feet get use to wearing tight shoes you are going to drop sizes I am wearing a 9 now and my street shoe is a 10.5.

For my foot Evolv's shoes just fit great. The knuckle of my big toe screams in most other shoes. For some reason in Evolv's especially the Pontas they feel fine. Even with the extra toe rand on these bad boys which grab under holds great.

The heel is deep and you really have to pull to get the shoe on but they fit great. Heel sinks in and when on the rock there is no dead space. Great for heel hooks! I recommend these as your all around shoe. Bouldering or lead climbing you can't go wrong.

Favorite Harness

Petzl Sama Harness - Men's

Petzl Sama Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2009

This harness is extremely light and comfortable. You can climb all day and completely forget you have it on. Plenty of room to stash your gear. Most of all without all the extra buckles, it never gets tangled so it goes on and off really easily which is nice if you also go to the gym.

The only thing to be careful of is since it doesn't have leg adjustments you want to make sure you get the right size. While I could probably get away with a small in most other harnesses I needed a medium with this one to make sure the leg loops weren't too tight. So if you are right in between two sizes. Go larger.

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2009

Most of the equipment is straight forward. The important thing to focus on here is the harness. The pros to this harness is comfort and price. Decent price and when you are sitting back in this thing you wouldn't think you were sitting in a chair.

The down side for me anyway is it gets tangled when packed away and can be annoying to put on sometimes. Thats the only real down side. So if you are lead climbing with it you have to only deal with this for a minute at the beginning of the day. No big deal.

I went with the screw locking...

Petzl Am'D Locking Carabiner

Petzl Am'D Locking Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2009

I went with the screw locking version. They are cheaper and simpler, which usually means they will last longer. At my local gym all top ropes are set up with the orange self locking biners and some of them are sticking and can be a pain to get on and off. Maybe some lube would fix that. But since I'm not using mine in the gym where I am bouncing between top rope lines every 2 minutes I went with the screw locking. LOVE THEM.

Great device

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2009

Pros-Safe as you are going to get when belaying. For those who have no idea how this works. Basically the rope goes through this device and it acts a lot like a seat belt. Slow movement and it works its way back and forth no problem. When you add sudden and or a decent load, it locks up. Thus keeping the climbing from falling to the ground. There is also a lever on it that depending on how hard you pull will release some or all of the tension and thats how you slowly let the climber down.

Cons-I have heard that smaller ropes low 9's and smaller don't work well or at all in this device because they are too small for the gri gri to grab well. This is not something I have ever encountered because I don't use anything under 10mm. Also you want to make sure you understand and know how to use other belay devices in case of emergency and just so you know the proper and safe way to belay. You can get yourself in trouble using this thing sloppily. You get into bad habits and bam someone gets hurt. So use it because its the safest and also be smart and mature when using it because this is some ones life we are talking about.

Metolius Climbing Tape Roll DO NOT USE

Metolius Climbing Tape Roll DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2009

There isn't a whole lot you can do with to improve or screw up tape. This is dependable tape that works well and rips easy enough when taking a piece off the roll and stays on your hands when climbing. I recommend it.

Black Diamond Forearm Trainer

Black Diamond Forearm Trainer

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2009

Works well for beginners. I first bought this when I started out climbing. I definitely felt a burning in my arms and gave my hands something to do when I was itching to go out climbing. Overall I don't know how much this helped improve my forarm strength. I spend every other day climbing so now I don't use it at all because on the days off I need that time for my arms to recoup.

So I guess what Im saying is, it helps a little. Its cheap and couldn't hurt to get. So if you are thinking about it, then just get it. Its the price of a Burger King meal anyway you don't have that much to loose.

Can't beat it

Metolius Simulator CNC Training Board

Metolius Simulator CNC Training Board

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2009

This is one piece of at home training I would highly recommend. It has every size and type of hold you need and get this, when you are super strong you can turn it over for super small quarter inch holds...sick!

It comes with intructions for training routines and is easy to hand just about anywhere. I have mine attached above a door frame and it works great.

Warning: You have probably heard this already but if you are just starting out, wait to get this or at least don't over train with it. Trust me you need to improve at a semi gradual rate so your tendons and such can keep up with your muscles. It would be very easy to cause hand injury on this thing, and if you think waiting a day or two to climb is murder try several months!

Good for the gym

Metolius Super Chalk Sock

Metolius Super Chalk Sock

Rating for this product: 3 March 13, 2009

Some gyms make you use them. Others would just appreciate it because there isn't piles of chalk spilled all over the place from knocked over bags.

Basically the chalk is in this little bag. You squeeze it to get some out and on your hands. It works well enough but you do have to squeeze a bit to get good coverage which isn't something you want to be doing on long tall routes. Also the amount of chalk for the price isn't a great bang for your buck.

Suggestion: get one for the gym and use loose chalk out at the crag.

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2009

LOVE THEM. The lace system to some would seem like over kill but when you are on the move and looking for a quick adjustment then this is the shoe for you. Breathable, but doesn't get too cold. Tightens nice and the insert feel great. Its very light weight. I run trails in them and even completed the Philadelphia Half Marathon in them. I LOVE THESE SHOES.

Black Diamond Instinct Backpack - 1700cu in

March 11, 2009

No, if its anything like the other crash pads with hip belts I have come across, it is permanently attached and is not long enough to go all the way around the outside of it. You either strap it on or just let it chill at your sides or behind you. Its not a big deal, I never really notice it when its not attached.

Here's a question. How can you have a LEATHER shoe that is considered green? Yes I understand that it was tanned with some vegetable, but that is like calling a V8 Hummer green because the windshield wiper blades are made out of recycled rubber.
