Petzl Calidris Harness - Men's

May 15, 2009

Petzl Calidris vs. something like the Arc'Teryx a300 harness - I'm looking to buy a good comfortable harness for doing a trekking peak. I've had people suggest both. Any thoughts? This seems to be almost twice the weight but has more padding behind it. Not sure what is the best route....

XCR Version Review of Alpha SV

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 5, 2009

I decided to go for the xcr (last year's version) of the Alpha SV just because the price was $300 (yes, $300) less. Beautiful jacket. I know there's some small differences (0ther than the obvious difference between gore xcr and gore pro), but they just weren't worth the difference in price to me. I tried on both and if anyone is wondering, the older version of this jacket does fit slightly larger. I find that the cut is such that you could fit a down jacket/vest under no problem, but you wouldn't feel awkward when wearing one over top either. The cut comes in at the waist and leaves a bit more room across the chest, shoulders and arms. Great jacket - completely waterproof and warm under strong winds. I will be taking this to the Himalayas this fall and will write an updated review at that time. Love the look, love the features though.

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

February 21, 2009

I'm trying to decide between two shells. This jacket (with GoreTex Pro) and the older version of this jacket (with XCR Gore). I note about 50 grams difference and some changes with the cinches etc, but are there any other major differences in terms of quality? I can get the XCR version for 299 vs 599 for this jacket which is making me lean more towards the older version. Thoughts?

Arc'teryx Theta SV Jacket - Men's

February 18, 2009

I am similar to you in size. I tried one on last night. I'm 6'2" and wear a 42T or 44R with a 36" sleeve, 195lbs. I found the large was fine, even with a shirt and heavy wool sweater on underneath.

Mountain Hardwear Xenon Jacket - Men's

I just tried one of these on last night. I'm 6'2" and 195lbs and the large fit but was pretty tight with a mid-weight wool sweater underneath.

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Jacket - Men's

Also, does anyone have the green flash colour? I can't find it in stores around here and would be keen to see a photo of what it actually looks like on (as opposed to the stock photo). Thanks...

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Jacket - Men's

February 17, 2009

I'm thinking of getting this jacket and was wondering in terms of a layering system, should this go on the outside or inside of a light/med weight down jacket? I figure that if I went for the MH Phantom, the jacket could fit inside, but if I went for a Feathered Friends Volant jacket then it'd go on top of the Beryllium. Correct?

Good Everyday Use

The North Face Valkyrie Softshell Jacket - Men's

The North Face Valkyrie Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2009

Really, I'm pleased with the jacket for what I bought it for - everyday use. I've had it for about a year and a half...wear it all the time. Excellent rain protection, breathable etc. I think I agree with other reviews that it won't keep you warm in very cold temps but good to about 32F/0C, depending on what you have. My beef is the lining of the pockets. I have put keys in the pockets a few times and now there's holes in them. The pockets are thin and shouldn't be used for much (perforated/aerated). Having said that, I love the look - fits perfect, versatile, easy to clean, throw in a bag and take anywhere.

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

February 15, 2009

I'm thinking about this jacket in combination with the MH Beryllium. Can this fit underneath or is it too big? Any need to go one size up from normal on the hard shell?

The North Face Valkyrie Softshell Jacket - Men's

February 12, 2009

Probably not. I'm 6'2" 190 and I have an XL. Fits perfect with a sweater and tshirt underneath. Wouldn't be able to fit much more though.
