The North Face Mt.Rainier Surplus Pant - Men's

August 27, 2011

Hey backcountry, some of us unfortunate little creeps are short. What's with all the 32" inseams? It seems to be this way for most the pants I look at on this website. I'd love to see more 30" inseam pant varieties. That being said, I've used backcountry several times before, and other than my little rant here, have nothing but good things to say about them.

Good jacket.

Columbia Ascender Softshell Jacket - Mens

Columbia Ascender Softshell Jacket - Mens

Rating for this product: 5 December 26, 2009

I found this jacket for sale at backcountry.com. I thought it looked like a nice jacket for the price and I was right. This thing is pretty thin and light, it would be very easy to pack. Despite it's being thin it offers good protection from cool weather. For really cold situations it can be used as a mid layer. I think it also has zip-in integration for Columbia outer shells. This thing has a soft inner liner so it's comfy and warm right away. The fit is like a zip-up fleece coat. At 5'8" 148 lbs the small fits perfectly. Backcountry's service was good as always.

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 10, 2009

Super comfy jacket. I'm 5'8" 145 lbs and size small fits me perfect. I like this even better than my more expensive pumori jacket (and I really like my pumori jacket). Backcountry's service was great again.

Pocket space

The North Face Decagon Jacket - Men's

The North Face Decagon Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 10, 2009

I like to have lots of pockets for all the things I never carry on me... But if I wanted to, I could. This is why I was interested in the decagon. I use this jacket for colder rainy days, water beads really well off of it. It has a powder skirt and goggle/ipod pocket and would make a good ski/snowboard jacket though I imagine you'd want a decent midlayer underneath on the colder snow days. It's light enough to cram into a backpack (but would take most the space) it's more bulky than a plain windbreaker. This thing also has a soft liner on the chin area for when you need the hood. The only reason I rated this 4 stars out of 5 is the velcro on the hand pockets, it's an extra 2 seconds of hassle I shouldn't have to deal with (to get my hands past both velcro and zippers just to get into the pockets). As somebody reviewed before, zippers alone would have sufficed on the hand warmer pockets. Other than that this is a great jacket that with the proper layering can keep you warm in almost any weather.

Well thought out.

Burton Arctic Jacket - Men's

Burton Arctic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2009

I just received my Burton Arctic from backcountry today and I am very impressed. This thing was well thought out. For having all that fleece lining inside, it is still quite light and very pliable. If you need to sneak around the mountain like a silent ninja, this would be a good jacket for it. It has a lot of pockets, 2 hand pockets with warm lining inside + a key holder, (oddly the liner is only on the knuckle side of the pockets though). 2 velcro chest pockets about 6x6 in. An inside 3-in-1 pocket that ranges from 2 little 2"x1" pockets to a 3"x6" and a 6"x6" pocket. It also has a nice goggle/ipod pocket on the other side which is really cool because it's located just inside the storm flap that covers the main zipper... you just open the flap and you have access to your biggest pocket without having to unzip anything. It also has a clear lift pass pocket near the bottom of the inside so you can just flip up to show it. I can't attest to the weather-proof qualities of this thing yet, I should get to expose it to rain tomorrow, and I can't wait to try it out on the mountainside. As far as size goes, I'm 5'8" 145 lbs and I bought a small. The snow skirt fits nice and snug around my waist and the rest of the jacket is a very very relaxed fit. A medium would have definitely been too big. I still have a lot of room to put layers underneath and maintain a lot of free movement. This thing only lacks wrist gaiters and gore-tex (which would probably make it much less affordable). This is a comfy and good looking jacket with plenty of utility, I think I got a great buy.
