Not So Durable

Petzl Fin'Anneau Sling

Petzl Fin'Anneau Sling

Rating for this product: 3 March 23, 2009

I bought two of these slings (30 cm) alongside two wild country dyneema slings, and these have worn noticeably faster. lots of fuzzing and stretching as compared with the WC slings, and after less than a year and only about 70 pitches they need to be replaced. i also have a BD dynex 60 cm that's wearing much more gradually.

Good Cams

Metolius Master Cam

Metolius Master Cam

Rating for this product: 4 February 27, 2009

I've got the #1 and #2, and I like them. The action isn't as stiff as on C3s, which I prefer, and the unit is flexible without being floppy or having a bigass sheath on it. They place solidly, more solidly than TCU's, in my opinion, by virtue of having 4 lobes. Metolius reports the range to be exactly the same as TCUs, and Mastercams are only marginally heavier - a tradeoff I'll take for single stem flexibility and 4-lobe stability.

Edelweiss Axis Climbing Rope - 10.3mm

Edelweiss Axis Climbing Rope - 10.3mm

Rating for this product: 4 February 27, 2009

The Edelweiss Axis was my first climbing rope, and has done really well sport climbing and top-roping lots of followers. At 10.3 mm is handles well without being too bulky, and it's 10 fall rating inspires confidence over several years of use. I used this rope for about three years on sandstone in Kentucky, and I would say the sheath is in good shape - it's durable as all hell.

I wouldn't however, recommend this rope for alpine, trad, or areas where long approaches are the norm, as the 60m weighs in at ~9.5 pounds. Perfect for someone who's climbing with lots of beginners and plans on being really hard on their cord.

Metolius Freenut Nut Tool w/Palm Protector

Metolius Freenut Nut Tool w/Palm Protector

Rating for this product: 2 February 23, 2009

it certainly does what a nut tool needs to do - it gets gear unstuck. but, then again, what nut tool doesn't do that? these tools differ from one another only in terms of the 'bells and whistles' - palm protector, little wiregate, keeper leash. this palm protector works, but the wiregates on the metolius freenut tools i've used or fooled around with don't snap closed like carabiner gates normally do, making it sort of pointless. if you're looking for a good nut tool with worthwhile extras, go for the Wild Country Pro-Key nut tool. the palm protector is more integrated to the device, the gate actually snaps closed, and it comes with a thin, coiled-wire leash and minibiner that doesn't interfere when you're bashing out a piece. as an added bonus, the integrated leash saves you a carabiner and sling to attach your nut tool to yourself.

Spectacular Jacket

Arc'teryx Sidewinder AR Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Sidewinder AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2009

Super satisfied with this shell. I beat the hell out of everything I own (not on purpose), and this is the one item I own that has held up to everything. I've worn it skiing 14 days, and it shows minimal wear from ripping through tree branches and against the occasional rock. Totally breathable, totally waterproof, and quite warm, even in high winds. I get cold easily, and am comfortable skiing with only a synthetic T, base layer, and this jacket on. If you want a coat that'll perform no matter what the task, go with something ProShell. The material is outstanding. As for the design (assym zipper), it's definitely unique, and I appreciate. However, if you snowboard Goofy, the zipper/zipper guard will totally bug you.

Sick Scalloping

DMM Wallnuts

DMM Wallnuts

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2009

These nuts bite much better than any other piece I've used, whether BD, Wild Country, or Metolius. The complex grooves and scalloping make for confidence-inspiring placements.

Comfy

Metolius Boss Hog Crash Pad

Metolius Boss Hog Crash Pad

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2009

This pad does what it needs to do - provides soft catches for bouldering falls. I've got about 6 months of continuous use on this pad (it's gathering dust these winter months), and it's softened up very nicely form it's original stiffness, but is still very firm. I've taken a few pretty decent falls on this pad, 15 ft.+, and felt just fine. The carpet top gathers a lot of stuff (sticks, leaves, etc...) but brushes off easily, and, more importantly, cleans shoes really well. One of the stitches on the "hook" side of the velcro closure pocket has ripped, making the pocket a bit of a hassle to use, but I'm happy overall. A better pad than most in this price range.

Comfy, but...

prAna Lynx Shirt Jacket - Long-Sleeve - Men's

prAna Lynx Shirt Jacket - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 10, 2009

I bought one off SAC and was a little disappointed. The fit is kind of bulky for a Prana item, though not enough to warrant sizing up. Don't let the name fool you, you're definitely buying a jacket rather than a shirt. I was expecting an item that would sort of play a dual role - could function as a warm layer but was light enough to fit under a standard softshell or whatever, kind of like a heavy flannel shirt, but this thing is a jacket in its own right.

Wore it once, and it kept me warm standing around a garage at a party, but on the bike ride I found it let in lots of cold air, and in general didn't keep me super warm.
