Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

December 4, 2009

I left my boot outside overnight and dew collected on them and froze! It was a cold morning for my toes, but that was my fault, not Asolo's

MSR WhisperLite Stove

Picture taken on my NOLS course (you might recognize the classic NOLS fry/bake). I forgot exactly what this was, but it turned out delicious thanks to the whipserlite

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

December 4, 2009

I have worn them in sub-freezing, but not sub-zero temperatures. As long as you have a pair of heavy socks and keep moving you should be fine. They are not insulated as Ben said, so you might be better off with a boot with more insulation. Try something like this: http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/The-North-Face-Slot-GTX-Winter-Boot-Mens/TNF3311M.html

LOVE EM'

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 4, 2009

I have had these boots for close to five years and have probably logged more than 1000 miles in them and they are still in awesome condition. They are totally waterproof, extremely comfortable, and very durable. They do not take very long to break in, and once you do break them in, they will be your best friend on the trail. They might seem a bit pricey, but the extra money is worth it. Your feet are the most important thing on the trail, and having a good boot is a priority. Highly recommended!

Love it, but....

Byer of Maine Parachute Traveller Hammock

Byer of Maine Parachute Traveller Hammock

Rating for this product: 3 December 4, 2009

I got this hammock about three years ago and used it all the time. I slept in in even when there was a tent with an air mattress because it was so comfortable! Unfortunately, the parachute cord snapped after a couple of months, and once one string breaks, they all go. So, I bought some 3mm cord and re-strung the entire hammock and now the thing is bomb proof.
Overall, the hammock is worth what you pay for it. It is not too expensive, and it does the trick. However, it will not last as long as some other makes. But if you are willing to spend the time re-stringing it with some stronger cord, this thing will be your best friend during those warms summer nights.

CAMP USA Picto Bet Lock

CAMP USA Picto Bet Lock

Rating for this product: 5 October 26, 2009

This is a sweet carabiner, especially for the cost. It is lighter than most of the black diamond carabiners and cost a lot less, so you are getting the same quality and strength for a lot less money.
They are great for building anchors, using prusik or even belaying. I have had mine for over a year, and love em!

CAMP USA Orbit Wire Carabiner

CAMP USA Orbit Wire Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 October 26, 2009

This is a sweet carabiner, especially for the cost. It is lighter than most of the black diamond carabiners and cost almost half the price, so you are getting the same quality and strength for a lot less money.
They are great for racking your trad gear or using with slings/draws. I have had mine for over a year, and love em!

Mountain Hardwear Lamina 45 Sleeping Bag: 45 Degree Synthetic

Mountain Hardwear Lamina 45 Sleeping Bag: 45 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 April 1, 2009

I ordered this bag in the small size, which says that the max user height should be 6 feet...well...I am exactly six feet tall and had a hard time in this bag. Fortunately, backcountry.com has an awesome return policy and let me exchange the bag for the regular :) !!
That being said, if you are around 6 feet, go for the "regular" sized bag. It will be worth the extra weight an money.

Great Headlamp

Petzl MYO XP Headlamp

Petzl MYO XP Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2009

The MYO XP has it all...ultra-bright LED, long battery life, durability, and a lot less weight than similar headlamps. The price may seem a little high, but this is a great headlamp. I can say nothing negative about it!

incredibly Slow!!!

MSR MiniWorks Ex Water Filter

MSR MiniWorks Ex Water Filter

Rating for this product: 2 February 2, 2009

I bought this filter becuase it had good reviews, and MSR makes good products, but when it came time to use the filter in the field, I was amazed at how slow it took to filter one liter of water. There are many other filters (i.e Katadyn Hiker) which filter much faster and get rid of the same harmful stuff.
Would not recommend...go for the Katadyn...I have used that one as well, and it is much better.
