  • Bio:

I'm a golfer all year around, but I do enjoy more adventurous treks like all mountain skiing in the Winter, trail running in the Spring, and hiking in the Fall.

When it comes to gear, I'm brand loyal to specific pieces. I stick with Mountain Hardwear for ski base layers and balaclava. I am currently wearing the Arc'teryx Stinger for my primary mountain shell. I also have a Mountain Hardwear Tenacity shell (Goretex XCR Pro Shell) for rainy days. For extended underwear I highly recommend ExOfficio for boxer briefs that will keep you odor free and dry for 2 days in a row before needing a sink wash...superb for backpacking.

Smartwool cannot be beaten when it comes to extended wear. I rock mine during hiking, skiing, or even daily wear. There might be a better "breathing" sock out there for trail running, but I haven't strayed far from Smartwool.

I've never known anything other than Salomon for trail running shoes. I've got an XCR for muddy, wet trails, and also a very breathable pair for dry summer travels. I do wear a high top boot by Northface for genera hiking.

I don't have a ton of external gear, but I do prefer Camelpack for hydration and a CRKT for my tri-edge (spear, razor, and saw) trail knife. I sport Burton GoreTex gloves and MH micro chill polyester liners. Cotton liners are not near as warm because once you sweat in them, they don't dry out nearly as quickly as the synthetic variety.

Osprey is my bag of choice for packs. I've got a 4200 cu in the Osprey Aether for super extended backpacking trips abroad and or for ski trips. I prefer the lighter weight 3600 cu in Osprey Talon for weeklong or weekend trips. I also have a 1200 cu in day-pack by Osprey for the gym and coffee shop. The only non-Osprey pack I rock is the WeTex dry sack messenger, Anchorage, by Portland Outdoor Equipment.

Many great products exist for other brands, but those are the ones I generally stick with, because I know what to expect in fit and quality.

Arc'teryx Stinger Jacket - Men's - DO NOT USE

Arc'teryx Stinger Jacket - Men's - DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 March 10, 2009

This jacket is bomb-proof. I've never owned a shell that was this tough and light at the same time. This jacket fits true to size. I learned the hard way by ordering a size up to find the larger was too big. Remember, the more room (air space) you have after you have you layer, the colder you will be. I am a 41 inch chest with 34 inch arms and the Medium fits me like a glove with enough room that I don't feel constricted. The powder skirt is designed well and the stow-able hood/collar is probably the best feature on this jacket. You don't even need a balaclava on the mountain with this high collar. I've read some people's reviews saying that the collar was too rigid, but I don't agree with that. The only complaint (and it's not a deal breaker) I have about the jacket is that it would be nice to have a lift-ticket window on the arm, like the Sidewinder. It's not a cheap shell, but you pay for what you get in Arc'teryx.

Arc'teryx Stinger Jacket - Men's - DO NOT USE

February 26, 2009

I'm in between a M and L for the Stinger. I'm accustomed to the L in Mountain Hardwear Gear. I've heard this jacket runs big compared to other Arc'teryx jackets. I'm 5'10" and 175 with a 41" chest. I would wear a tshirt and gore windstopper fleece underneath I know that this is agreat shell. I just don't want a sloppy looking jacket. Any recommendations?

Mountain Hardwear Lodown Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Lodown Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2009

Pros...Best jacket for the price-point I've ever purchased...hands down! This jacket kept me warm at temps below 0 Fahrenheit (even with with only a t-shirt on). Built for cold, dry climates. I've taken it on a couple of ski trips already, and I haven yet to be disappointed. If you get too hot with a sweater underneath, then just release the pit zips. No need for a heavy base layer or wind stopper with this coat.

More obvious Cons...Don't wear this jacket during times of moderate to heave snow fall; and never during rain, unless you wear a shell over the top. in wet conditions you will become a walking-sponge without a waterproof shell. This is a great layering jacket for super cold/windy days on the mountain. Not as puffy as the Phantom or Sub-Zero, but still keeps you warm.

I don't like bulk when I ski, so I just use this before and after the mountain and for backpacking. If you are looking for a layering jacket, or just a coat to wear around town, this is a great MH buy and worth well more than you will pay for it.
