Jet Engine of a Stove

MSR XGK EX Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR XGK EX Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 5 February 26, 2010

I have used mine for years, and am always amazed. This things boils water like there is no tomorrow! As others have mentioned, this thing does not simmer, it is all out or nothing, having said that, I have not found this a problem, just plan to eat meals where you add hot water and that is it. People have mentioned that it is loud, it is, but I think it adds to the fun, what could be better then cooking your breakfast on a jet engine? I have used this in all sorts of conditions and it does not seem to care, from sea level up to 15,000', from 100F to -40F it does what it is meant to do, which is melt snow and boil water.

Solid 4-Season Tent

MSR Asgard Tent 2-Person 4-Season

MSR Asgard Tent 2-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 5 February 26, 2010

I have had the Asgard for a while now, and am always happy to bring it along on overnight trips. I have taken it up into the White Mountains of NH from Mid November through March (for summer trips I use my lighter GoLite Xanadu) and it is fantastic. As others have noted, it is super easy to set up, and there is a ton of room inside the tent and in the vestibules. I am 6'2" and 175lb and my friend who I hike with is around 6' and same weight, and we both easily fit in with room to spare. I really like the double vestibules, so we can each have our own, or have one strictly for gear and one for cooking, there is plenty of room to fire up my MSR XGK-EX stove without having to worry about the flame hitting the fly. Again, as others have said, it ventilates great. Have used it on -20F nights with winds up to 40 or 50 mph, and the tent is bombproof. We leave the top of the vestibules unzipped 8-12" and the inner door unzipped on the top half, with this set up, we have never woken up to much if any condensation inside the tent (the mesh doors do collect a fair bit though). It is a bit heavy, but we think it is worth it. The gear lofts that are included are great, and work very well with the pole design of the tent to create a really cavernous space inside. The one thing I am a bit skeptical about is the 2-3 person rating, given, we are both on the longer side, but I would call this a roomy 2 man, and I would take a different tent if I was going to be sleeping with two others.

Fantastic Jacket!!!

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2009

I got this jacket last winter and have to admit that it is probably one of the best purchases I have ever made. It works in every situation I have used it in. I live in Vermont, and go to college up in Maine. I take it to all my brothers ski races, where it is often 0F with a stiff breeze, where we stand still for upwards two hours, and I have never felt chilled. I have taken it back country skiing in the Chic Chocs where it got down to -20F in the morning and I did have to put two expedition weight tops on under it, but then it was as warm as my sleeping bag. As every one has said, it packs down super small, I have noticed that the more you squish it the more feathers seem to come out, having said that, no down has come out and I found that if I just put it on the top of my pack and did not stuff it into its stuff sack, the feathers stopped coming out. For sizing, I would also recommend getting a size up, I am 6'2" 190 lb athletic build and the XL fits fine, the arms are perfect length, I have do admit, I didn't find a problem with the torso length, but then again I am usually not wearing it by itself, I usually have on either a pair of MH absolute zero down pants of my OR mentor snow pants. The only reservation about it that I have is that the material seems rather flimsy, it's great for throwing on when you get to the summit or are just walking around or watching a x-c ski race, but whenever I am around camp or walking through the woods with it, I always try to have a shell on top of it, I am just worried that it is going to snag on something and rip. This hasn't happened or come close to happening, so I can't say that it is a fault, but me being a little bit anal, the fabric does seem a bit light, compared to say their absolute zero down jacket, but for the trade you get a much lighter jacket. Hope that helps!

Mountain Hardwear Stiletto 1 Tent 1-Person 3-Season

June 22, 2009

Hi! I am 6'2" and 190 lbs with an athletic build, and I am interested in buying a light-weight solo tent. I have looked around at a bunch of different ones, and am inclined to go with the MH stiletto. Does anyone have any opinions? My biggest concern is making sure that I will fit in the tent, from the above reviews I am not sure if I will or not. My other worry is that this is not a free standing tent, has anyone found this to be a major annoyance camping on rocky/frozen ground? Thanks!!!!!!
