Finally a warm softshell

The North Face Apex Mckinley Softshell Jacket - Men's

The North Face Apex Mckinley Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 15, 2010

Just recently got this jacket for a birthday present, and so far I am impressed. I have tried a few other softshells (notably the Outdoor Research Logic jacket) and have found them a bit lacking in the warmth department. I wore the McKinley today in mid to low 40's with a stiff wind and it kept me pretty warm even though I did not have any major layers underneath. I am 5'8" 185lbs, and the large fits great through the body, but is a bit long in the arms. Overall though, lots of pockets, definately blocks the wind, and decent insulation inside make it a comfy warm softshell for hiking or daily use.

Rating for this product: 5 March 15, 2010

I have the non-zippered version of this shirt and love it. I wear it quite a bit. Its pretty warm, very comfortable, and good as a base layer on cool days under a t-shirt or under a lot of layers on really cold days. Love the thumb holes too.

Sweet Biner

Black Diamond Quicksilver Screwgate Carabiner

Black Diamond Quicksilver Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 September 24, 2009

This biner is seriously hefty, in a good way. It feels very sturdy and is made very well. I don't climb myself, but I bought the biner as a connector for a leash for my 65lb Weimaraner. He is a very big, and very powerful dog and I wanted something for thleash I have that is made out of climbing rope, that would not come unhooked. So far it has held very well even in all the angles and twists and pulling of walking a very excited puppy. The price is next to nothing for this biner, so I couldn't pass it up. Good buy, at least from my standpoint.

Great Hoody

The North Face Half Dome Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

The North Face Half Dome Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 24, 2009

First and foremost, I will say, this hoody is super comfortable and pretty warm. I Had been looking for a new hoody to replace one I have had for years. I saw this one, and for the price I decided it would be a good buy. I am very pleased with the hoody. Be careful about the sizes though, Make sure you order up a size or maybe even two if you like your hoodies extra baggy. I am 5'8" 200lbs and the XL fits just right, a little baggy but it doesn't swallow me up like a tent. I wear a large in most TNF gear, but opted for the XL for a little more room.

Sweet coat, gotta test it though

Marmot Ellsworth Insulated Jacket - Men's

Marmot Ellsworth Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 28, 2009

Just picked this jacket up on sale. Haven't had a chance to test it out htough as the temps are in the 90's in GA this time of year, hence the sale. I put this jacket on just on a whim, but as soon as I did I was sold. It felt like wearing a sleeping bag, in a good way. Very soft, very light and it packs into itself which would make a great pillow when not in use. Does feel a bit "fragile" to the touch so I would be careful with it. I didn't buy it for major stuf anyway, just a good around town coat or under a shell for hiking. I am 5'9" 190lbs and the large fit me perfectly, a major selling point as its hard to find stuff that fits right all over.

Nice pack, gotta test it though.

Kelty Chuckwagon Dog Pack

Kelty Chuckwagon Dog Pack

Rating for this product: 3 June 26, 2009

Just og this pack recently and it really looks nice. I like how it comes with the bell on it and the saddle bags are expandable. Haven't had it out on the trail though, but seems to fit Moose (my 45lb. Weimareiner puppy I got the medium)pretty well. I think he will like it and I can't wait to test it out on the trail. I will update once I have really put this pack to work. As for now though, looks quality and fits right.

Update

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

Rating for this product: 5 June 26, 2009

Thought I would add a little update to my review. I have now had this knife for several months, and I still aboslutely love it. I carry this knife everyday. I use it pretty much everyday. Does anything from opening plastic containers and bags, to cardboard boxes, to whittling off kinding for a fire on a recent trip down the Nantahala River. I have taken this knife on numerous trails, hikes, and other various trips and it has performed like a champ. Seriously the best knife I have ever owned. Cuts through anything, comfortable, easy to use and keeps a blade. I have sharpened it maybe once in the close to a year I have had it and that was just a touch up. I love the serrations, great for cutting rope, plastic or anything they can hook into and slice. Only gripe, as with some other people on here, is that occasionaly it will open in your pocket. This has only happened once or twice and I think it had more to do with the pants I was wearing and a water bottle hitting the knife thna the knife itself. I love this knife and at least three of my friends have bought one since using mine. Great product for CRKT. If you are thinking about it, stop and just buy the thing, especially at that price, got mine on SAC for about the same.

Sweet pad

ALPS Mountaineering Comfort Series Air Pad

ALPS Mountaineering Comfort Series Air Pad

Rating for this product: 4 June 26, 2009

I have had this pad for about a year now, and I must say I really like it. It inflates super easy, doing most of the work itself, it only takes a few breaths to fill it up. I have had it on a couple trips now and it has perfrormed great. Pretty comfortable, light weight, and fairly warm. I say fairly because on on particularly cool trip to Providence Canyon, GA the temps got down in the 40's and had some pretty heavy rain. Not sure if it was the pad or the bag, or the three sided shelter we slept in, but I did get a bit chilly. The only other real complaint I have is that it is bulky. But then again, its an inflatable pad, so there has to be some trade off for the comfort. Bottom line: great pad, great price (got the short version on clearance). Definately worth the investment.

Outdoor Research Logic Jacket - Men's

June 22, 2009

There is no closure to the sleeves. Just the cuff. Some people complain about that as it can let in some cold. Currently looking for a replacement for this jacket as it was not warm enough. Alright if you layer it though. I just need a casual around town softshell that is warm. So no, no velcro or draw cords, just a regular cuff.

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

Rating for this product: 5 March 24, 2009

I reviewed this knife shortly after getting it and loved it. I have now had it for a few months and really had a chance to use it. All I can say is this is the best knife I have ever owned. I have never needed to sharpen it, it cuts through pretty much anything and is really lite. I got the black version with the serrations and beleive me, they are a good thing. They do not get stuck in things like other knives and they act like a hooked blade that you can just pull through material. I carry/ use this knife on a daily basis and love it. I have cut plastic containers, opend food with it, opened cardboard boxes, cut drain hose and all kinds of other stuff without a hitch. My only negative is that one time when I was hiking it opened in my pocket, but I believe this was due more to the pants I was wearing and that there was a water bottle that kept hitting it. Other than that once it has never opened like that and again I carry it on a daily basis. Do yourself a favor, or someone else for that matter, and buy this knife. You won't regret it.

great boots

The North Face Arctic Pull-On Boot - Men's

The North Face Arctic Pull-On Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 21, 2009

These boots are pretty sweet. I have had them a few days now and they break in quickly. You do need to wear tall socks, and preferably thick ones or layered to make the boot fit snug. Also, they slide around a little bit since they have no tightening straps or anything around the upper. Great casual boot, very warm. Would not use them on serious hiking, but as of yet I have no real complaints.

Great softshell

Outdoor Research Logic Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Logic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 21, 2009

This jacket is really nice. Very comfortable. Sleeves are a bit long, but I don't have the longest arms in the world. Not super warm, but cuts the wind well. Great for cool weather, layer it right and it can even do colder climates. Worked well for a hike through Providence Canyon, GA w/ temps from the 40's to the high 60's in the sun and a little wet and windy. Great for around town as well.

Awesome knife

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

Rating for this product: 5 January 4, 2009

Just got this knife the other day. It is amazing. I got the serrated edge charcoal version. The handle is extremely comfortable, and gives a solid grip. The blade is razor sharp right outta the box. Aggressive looks and solid design. The mechanism takes a few minutes to get used to but now I have it and I find my self flinging the blade out and closing it with one hand just for fun when I am bored. Awesome product and for a really great price.
