Winter Atheltic Boots

Kamik Patriot Winter Boot - Men's

Kamik Patriot Winter Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2009

These are the boots to wear if you are looking to do winter outdoor activity that involes walking. Unlike the traditional "pac" boot or Sorels as most people know, these boots fit well, and are relatively light weight. They are not floppy and do not have excessive heel slip. You can lace them up to the ankles only and slip in and out of them, or you can lace them all the way up for some serious action. They are plenty warm, but the liner do not come out. A double boot, sorel pac type with removable linears, are floppy by nature. Water proof boots of this caliber are not breathable, so foot sweat can cause dampness inside. Drying the inside requires a boot dryer. Out of the box the boot is very stiff and might be uncomfortable at the top of the cuff/chalf/shin area. I simply laced them up the the 2nd to last hook for the first several times wearing it. They have since softened up and I lace them all the way to the top now. Though the boot is 11 inch tall, the tounge is not fully gusteted, or attached to the boot all the way to the cuff/top (the last three hooks). Thus if you stand in 10" deep water, they will get wet. But these are winter/snow boots not waders. The lacing hardware is some of the best I have ever seen. The pivoting lower eyes, and first locking hook, really keep the lacing pressure distributed evenly over the forefoot, and secure for all day wear. The back logo tab if beefy enough to work as a semi automatic crampon notch, but not really in the right spot. Might work if you have alot of vertical adjustment in the heel piece of your crampons. I have been very pleased with these boots and Kamik as a company.

Skiing is the Task

Merrell Task Insulated Jacket - Men's

Merrell Task Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 23, 2008

Decent ski jacket for the money.

The good:
Shell is nice and water proof (but most new jackets are). Big zipper tabs easy to use with gloves on. Insulation enough for when you are skiing, not enough for just hanging around outside drinking beer. Trim fit, looks good. Chest Zips work. Plastic velcro cuff clouser seem cheap, but work well with gloves.

The bad:
Hood won't go over helmet, but removable. Main zipper doesn't come up far enough to cover face. Neck area is tight so can't get a neck gater under there zipped up. Not enough pockets. Trim fit makes it so you can't put much in the pockets anyways. Material bunches in the front when hunched over skinning up hills. Coat is a long fit afterall.

Overall:
Good jacket for Merrel's first year making clothes. Skis well and looks good, medium warmth. Doesn't have all the frills
