Reactor 2.5 Liter Pot

Reactor 2.5 Liter Pot

MSR Reactor Stove

September 13, 2009

There has been lots of questions about other cookware for the reactor. I have a sample of it and used it for the first time this weekend. It has the exact same performance as the 1.7L pot and is only 3 oz heavier. It has a removable handle ( the same handle on all of the MSR cookware). It has the same kind of lid as the 1.7 L pot. Look for it in early 2010.

Yes this will fit. You can use 48 in bars. However on the vehicle that large I would use the 58 in bars to give you more room on your rack for bikes, boats, cargo box, ect. You will need to use the small claw that comes with the rail grabs. Locks are not included, but are recommend.

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3 Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

April 1, 2012

The vestibule is pretty small. No way you can put 2 packs boot and cook at the same time. The tent is super light but not very roomy inside the tent or vestibule. A lot of people use the 2 man as a roomy one man. If you want something roomier get the 3 man.

The men's version has cut outs of foam the entire length of the pad. The women's pad has solid foam through 3/4 of the pad. They are sized differently. The men's reg is 6ft and the women's is 5'8". With the men's being long and more cut outs the pads actually way nearly the same. If you are on the shorter side save the 5 bucks and buy the women's model. More warmth for the same weight.

Yakima Little Joe 3 Bike Rack

March 24, 2012

No, you will need to get a strap rack that has arms that move independently where the bikes rest. On this rack the only parts that move at the piece that actually touch the car. You will need to look at either the King Joe or Quickback models from Yakima. There are not any strap racks at that price that will work well for your car. You will need to spend at least $150.

ACR SARLink View 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon

March 19, 2012

No there is no voice. It just sends a signal. It does confirm that message has been sent on the screen. When the signal is received SAR treats this as a life and death situation. This system is the most reliable system of its kind. The SPOT, other Satellite massagers, and SAT phones work good, but do have some reliability issues with signal. This is has the strongest transmitter and works on 2 different satellite systems (1 GPS based and 1 Radio Frequency Based. The other systems work on only 1 satellite system. The ACR products are basically the same systems that the military uses for downed pilots or fishing vessels that are in distress.

Petzl Canyon Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2012

I Have been using this harnes for about 2 years. The harness is very comfortable. The PVC butt protector is great. It is finally starting to show some wear. I think after this season I will be replacing it with a new PVC but protector. It has 2 large gear loops that have plenty of room for everything I need to carry canyoneering. The belay loop is set in a position so that you device does no twist. I love the easy adjustable buckles for taking your harness on and off easily. Also great if you are using a wetsuit and have to adjust your harness all the time.

One of them can hold a nalagen. There is also a bottle open attached which is handy. The bag is also really nice. By far the coolest ski rack made

Yakima FatCat 6 w/Locks

Yakima FatCat 6 w/Locks

Rating for this product: 5 March 12, 2012

First off this ski rack is beautiful. It is low profile and has smooth edges. The rack comes with all the hardware you need to install to a factory rack or round/square bars. Locks are also included. The button to open and close is easy to use even with big mittens. This rack is also over sized to fit wider skis. Most of the ski racks out there can barely hold 4 pairs of skis when they say it carries 6. Skis are getting wider so they are having to make wider ski racks. If you are looking for the best ski rack on the market then look no further.

It is also easy to take off an transfer to my truck when we need to carry extra bike on a road trip.

Rating for this product: 5 March 12, 2012

I had a set of Yakima control towers on too of my 08 Toyota Tundra. Was a lot of wind noise even with a fairing. The noise was cut by 80% when I added these bars. They look really really good. They installed really easy. The Yakima control towers were a little easier, but not by much. The bars are made of aluminum so they will never rust. In conclusion they look great, reduced the noise and will last longer then the Yakima or Thule bars.

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir All-Season Sleep Pad

March 12, 2012

The R value on this pad is 4.9. The most popular therma pad for backpacking is the the Prolite plus and has an R value of 3.8. I the summer you would not really notice the difference between these pads but in the winter you would. You should not real have any problem with over heating in the summer unless the night time temps are really warm (80 plus degrees). You might feel warm on this pad say if you are taking an afternoon nap in a summer. If over heating is a real concern then you should consider the Neo Air Xlite. it has an R value of 3.2 and will work all summer long plus on most of the shoulder seasons. If you are using it in the winter you will definitely want the All Season version.

Best Filter system out there

Platypus GravityWorks Filter and Purifier System

Platypus GravityWorks Filter and Purifier System

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2012

I love the fact that you never have to pump. The filter is lighter then 90% of the filter on the market. The filter is 1.5 times faster then most of the filters on the market. It packs down really small. Plus no pumping. To clean all you have to do in reverse the flow to back flush. I have been using this for about 2 years and can rave enough about this product. I have been on backpacking trip with 10 people and we used this one filter only for the trip. After the trip almost everybody asked what that filter was because they wanted one. The filter does not have a carbon filter that comes with it, but this year they introduced a carbon element as an accessory.

The bottle is soft and flexible. I have crash a bunch on these and have never had a blow out. The .5L size is the best for skiing. The 1L is a little big in my opinion.

MSR MiniWorks/WaterWorks Ceremic Filter Element

March 11, 2012

The water works has an extra paper like element. So the water works is a 2 stage filter. The second stage is basically a back up to the ceramic element. The sec onstage does have to be replaced, although not that often because clean water is flowing throughout he filter at that point. The mini works is just a one stage ceramic element. The mini works will have a faster flow rate then the water works and the pocket. The Water Works are no longer made. You will be able to get the secondary filter for a few more years. The mini works and the water works ceramic elements are the same.

Best Pack they have ever made

Granite Gear Blaze A.C. 60 Ki Backpack - 3350-3660cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2012

I have been a huge granite gear fan for many years. I have had a total of 5 packs from these guys and this is the best so far. The new suspension system and air flow system are the best that I have used so far. The pack is layer out really well. The water bottle pocket are deep and can be used for lots of things (fly rod, sandals, water bottles, ect. The front stretch pocket is huge. I ended up putting my tent rain fly in there to help it dry drying the day. The compression straps are all 550 military grade para cord. It look thin, but I have not problem on the 8 trips the pack has been on. I did wish that it came with a lid. Granite Gear do make a lid add on and I got. Glad I did it add a little extra storage for headlamps, map, snacks, ect. I love this pack and would recommend it over and over.

Now that I have slept on this pad I will ALWAYS go car camping with this pad. They are SOOOOOOO comfortable. I have a full size truck and 2 larges fit perfectly between the wheel wells. So can strap them together so that you do not fall between the 2 pads. There is a cover over the pad that has a fleece pillow top. Below that there is a 1in layer of memory foam. Then a 2 3/8 in thick thermarest pad. There are snaps on the cover for adding a Thermarest sleep system. The 40 degree down comforter is a great combo for this pads. Great Super Light tent

MSR Carbon Reflex 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

MSR Carbon Reflex 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 March 11, 2012

For the weight this is a great tent. I have slept several night in this tent with me (200lb and my wife 120lbs). For 3 lbs you get to 2 vestibules, 2 doors a pretty roomy tent. It is not free standing, but has great head room when sitting up. Most none free standing tents have terrible headroom. The fly material is super high quality. There are reinforcement patches on on all the stake out points, and wear points to keep the fly in great shape for many years of use. The only gripe I have is I wish there was just a little more head room right where you head is while you are sleeping. However, for all the room, features and weight I think that it is easy to over look this.

Finally a quality Liquid Fuel & Canister Stove in one

MSR Whisperlite Universal Stove

MSR Whisperlite Universal Stove

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2012

This is something I have been waiting for many years to come out. It works just like the Whisperlite International, but you can burn canister as well. The change the modes you need to change the get (takes about 1 min) and then you need to change the module that connects the fuel to the stove (takes about 2 mins). The other improvement is that the canister can be used in liquid feed mode. This will add a little extra burn time/performance on the canister. The stand for the liquid feed mode puts the canister at a slight angle that allows you to adjust the fuel easier with gloves on.

MSR Micro Rocket Stove

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2012

I got the opportunity to use this stove last summer on a 4 day backpacking trip. I have used the pocket rocket for many many years. The stove is lighter, packs up smaller and is more stable. MSR shorten the arms on the stove and made them stiffer. This improved the stability greatly over the pocket rocket. If also comes with an external piezo. It worked really good. Te hand held piezo protects the ceramic element to keep it working for many years of use (I hope).

Yes this beacon would work for snowmobiling. This is a pretty basic model and will get the job done. The beacons that retail for about $300 have more features and are easier to use. You should always know how to use your beacon and practice. A beacon is no good if you do not know how to search for your buddy when he is dying. No the pack is not waterproof and does not come with a rain cover. Very Very few packs are waterproof. In a light rain for a while the pack will be just fine. Long term in a heavy rain storm you will need a rain over. It is always good to keep the rain over on when it is raining because when the pack starts to absorb moisture it will get heavier and stay that way for a while. Pack covers shed water fast and will keep your pack light.

Granite Gear Crown V.C. 60 Backpack - 3660-4000cu in

March 10, 2012

Below is the measurements by size. You should use a flexible tape and go directly against your back.. If you do not have one do your best. If you are in the middle of the size it will not matter anyway. The difference between the two measurements are usually not that much difference. Below is also Granite Gears measuring instructions.

Crown Torso Lengths
Short Torso 14" to 18"
Regular Torso 18" to 21"
Long Torso 21" to 25"

What torso length should I get?

To find your torso length, measure the distance between your seventh cervical vertebra and the shelf of your hipbones. Do this by standing up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart. Tilt your head forward and place your hands on your hips, thumbs to the back. With a flexible tape, have someone measure from the most prominent vertebra at the base of your neck to an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This will be your torso length.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 2560-4395cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2012

I have had two of these bags for many years. I amazed at just how well they hold up. They have been on trains, planes and on top of automobiles. Nearly water proof. In the rain they are fine, but not dunk proof. The only problem I have is my wife constantly steals my large one. I am going to have to get her her own.

Great Dry Pack

SealLine Boundary Dry Pack

Rating for this product: 4 March 8, 2012

I have used this pack on several Canyoneering Trips where I know things are going to get wet. Its durability is excellent. The scraping against sandstone walls did little damage and kept everything dry. The closure system works well. The only thing I wish was that it had a better hip belt. The one that Sealine puts on the Por Pack would be killer

Best Canyoneering Shoe Period

Five Ten Canyoneer 2 Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 8, 2012

What can I say but Wow. This is by far and away the best Canyoneering shoe ever made. The sole is super sticky. The show is built bomber. Water drains quickly and the show dries quickly also. You will be wearing these with neoprene socks, so try them on with them. I have combed 5.9 in them and they where the next best thing to a climbing shoe. I would advise trying them with a 2mm pair and a 5mm. It is a good combo because you will be covered for weather water and colder water.

Best device for Canyoneers

Petzl Pirana Descender

Petzl Pirana Descender

Rating for this product: 5 March 8, 2012

I have been using this device for a couple of years now. I would say that it is the best descending device for Canyoneering. I did just get an ATS and am looking forward to comparing the two. The various friction setting and easy of lock off makes this my go to piece. Make sure that you get a binder that will fit the device. Most of the Petzl locking biners will work, but larger diamater biners will not. This is due to the anti slip/rotating piece where the binder connects too the device.

Mountain Hardwear Helion 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

September 16, 2009

The rain fly does require staking on both tents. For the most part any tent that has a vestibule will require staking.

Both tents are good choices. The mountain hardwares pole geometry is a little burlier as well as the floor. I might also look at the MSR Hubba Hubba and the HP version.

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2009

Been using this sick for the whole summer now. I have been using a large for an ultra pad. It replaced my Prolite 4 regular. It weighs less, and inch thicker, compresses smaller, 5 inches wider, 5 inches longer and way more comfortable. There is nothing out there that is this light and comfortable. I would venture to say that this is the great pad for backpacking ever made.

The only down side is that it is not self inflating. I can blow it up in about 20 breaths.

SealLine Storm Sack - Dry Bags

September 13, 2009

These are designed to be a light weight dry bag. They are not as durable as what you typically see in PVC coated dry bags, but way more durable then some of the sil nylon bags out there. They are great for sleeping bags, food bags, and for clothes. Great for backpacking, but if you are using them on a river I would get something more durable and with a better seal.
