Reactor 2.5 Liter Pot

Reactor 2.5 Liter Pot

MSR Reactor Stove

September 13, 2009

There has been lots of questions about other cookware for the reactor. I have a sample of it and used it for the first time this weekend. It has the exact same performance as the 1.7L pot and is only 3 oz heavier. It has a removable handle ( the same handle on all of the MSR cookware). It has the same kind of lid as the 1.7 L pot. Look for it in early 2010.

Mountain Hardwear Helion 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

September 16, 2009

The rain fly does require staking on both tents. For the most part any tent that has a vestibule will require staking.

Both tents are good choices. The mountain hardwares pole geometry is a little burlier as well as the floor. I might also look at the MSR Hubba Hubba and the HP version.

However there is no need for a subscription in order to use the emergency functions on the beacon. If you want something for true emergencies this is the product to get. If you want a messaging device then get a SPOT. The ACR products are designed as a life saving technology and are the most reliable.

Therm-a-Rest Neoair Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Neoair Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2009

Been using this sick for the whole summer now. I have been using a large for an ultra pad. It replaced my Prolite 4 regular. It weighs less, and inch thicker, compresses smaller, 5 inches wider, 5 inches longer and way more comfortable. There is nothing out there that is this light and comfortable. I would venture to say that this is the great pad for backpacking ever made.

The only down side is that it is not self inflating. I can blow it up in about 20 breaths.

SealLine Storm Sack - Dry Bags

September 13, 2009

These are designed to be a light weight dry bag. They are not as durable as what you typically see in PVC coated dry bags, but way more durable then some of the sil nylon bags out there. They are great for sleeping bags, food bags, and for clothes. Great for backpacking, but if you are using them on a river I would get something more durable and with a better seal.

MSR Reactor Stove

February 23, 2009

Reactor all the way. There are 3 big advantages to the reactor over the Jet Boil.1. Pressure Regulation- This stove has a pressure regulator that basically allows the stove to use all the fuel in the can and no difference in performance no matter how little fuel is in the can. At the last 4% of fuel the stove performance goes to crap. With a jetboil once you get to the half way point the performance begins to drop significantly2. The stove is wind proof- This is accomplished because the stove is a radiant burner rather then a convective burner stove. This allows the pot to sit almost directly on the burner. There is no heat being lost by the wind coming by and blowing the convective gases away.3. Cold Temp Performance- This is combination of the pressure regulator and the pot sitting directly on the burner. The stove will boil a liter of water in about 3 mins no matter how much wind, how cold it is, or the altitude. As long is the fuel can is not gelled up. People who use this stove a lot will tell you that this is the best winter canister stove on the market.

Platypus Cleanstream Gravity Filter System

February 21, 2009

I have already used it and think it is a great system. It will filter just under 2 liters a min. Cleaning is a piece of cake. All you do is filter some water then take the clean bag and move it higher then the dirty bag. After this process is done just dump out the dirty bag and your filter is clean. The important thing is not to leave water in the filtration cartridge if you are going to have a freeze at night. This will damage filter. I hope this helps just let me know if you have any other questions.

MSR Hubba Tent: 1-Person 3-Season

February 8, 2009

There are a couple of key differences.-The HP is a better tent if you are using it in colder conditions due to less mesh. The Hubba is almost completely mesh. While the HP the mesh is only in the roof and part of the door.-The fly material on the HP is also much nicer. It is the most expensive material that MSR uses in tents. It is lighter then the fly on the Hubba. Also all of the stress points are reinforced and welded to make it stronger.-The HP is also 4 oz lighter.

MSR XGK EX Multi-Fuel Stove

February 6, 2009

This stove is loud. You can be 30 ft away and know that someone has fired up an XGK. Most stoves in this High Altitude Expedition liquid fuel are loud.Well it kinda simmers. If you are wanting to do some gourmet cooking then this is not the stove for you. It works great for melting snow, boiling water, cooking soup, noodles and that is about it. If you want a stove that can simmer really well then look at the MSR Dragonfly. It is just as loud as the XGK. The flame control is a candle flame all the way up to a blow tourch and everything in between. They both work great in the winter, but the XGK is more durable and works better at really high altitude.

MSR E-Bivy

Pretty small. It actually is packaged in something resembling a small can of soup, but is impossible to get back in the bag (some, with about an hour's worth of effort have been able to, but it's not worth it man). However, there is a slightly larger bag included made for repackaging. The bivy itself is large enough to fit the fattest bags and is very water-resistant, but its really made for emergencies if your caught out with no shelter. It's not intended to be your only or main shelter however. The floor is also waterproof

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

January 29, 2009

I'm about the same height and weight and I usually go with the 25s. The lightnings don't give you quite as much flotation as a regular snow shoe so I would go with 25s.If you are spending the majority of the time on the trail then I would go with the 22's. Plus if you are a runner then you really want the shorter/lighter shoe. Now if you go off trail you will sink more, but if you are spending 70% of the time on trail the 25's will not benefit you that much

Now if you where to ever us it in the US I would re register here in the US. Or I would refill out the register form and under the notes section mention that you are going to be in the US during these dates. You can do this as many times as you want. Anytime that you have a MAJOR trip I would do this no matter what country you are going to. It does help with the speed at which they can deploy SAR. Hope this helps.

MSR SweetWater Microfilter

December 25, 2008

You can leave this out to freeze, but you must be SURE that all of the water is out of the filter. If there is any decent amount of water in the filter you could damage the filter element. All you need to do is give it several extra pumps out of the water and then detach the pump from the filter element. This will insure that there is no water in the pump and that all pressure is out of the filter.

The Evo is cheaper ($199.99), modular(can be a 22 inch shoe or a 28 inch shoe with the tail added), and more durable. Also you slide your foot from the back of the snowshoe to the front. Because this is a platform shoe it has crunchy sound while walking, but it is not that load. The Lightening is much light and has better traction. This snowshoe you step on top of the binding and then tighten the straps. These cost more ($269.00)Now that said both shoes are extremely durable. More durable then many of the other brands. BEST STOVE EVER

MSR Reactor Stove

MSR Reactor Stove

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

This stove rocks. There are several things that make this stove better then any other stove on the market. First, the stove is pressure regulated. That takes the fuel can from 65 psi and regulates to about 13 psi. This allows the stove to burn at the same performance all the way through the can. No throwing away cans that are still a half to a third full because you stove stops performing well. Second, the stove is wind proof. With most canister stove if you were in 32 degrees and had a 20 mph wind the stove would never boil. With this stove you will get 3 min boil times everytime. The pot sits about half a cm from the burner, so there is almost no heat loss from this stove. If you are looking for a great winter stove this is the one to look at.

MSR Missing Link Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

I have been using this as my summer backpacking tent for the last 3 years. I put this in a Granite Gear XS compression sack so it packs down so small. I have video if anyone want to see it of this tent in 50+ MPH winds with rain, snow, and hail above tree line in Colorado. As long as you guy the tent out it can take some pretty serious weather. I admit I was a little scared when the weather came in, but getting through the night with no problems I was pumped. This is a great ultralight structure.

Brunton Vapor All-Fuel Stove

December 22, 2008

I work with MSR and I know that in all of our stoves that it does not work with our stoves very well. I have never heard of a stove using this kind of fuel and working very well. I know that you want to do the sustainable thing but I think that any stove using this kind fuel would kill the life of the stove. White gas is the best thing to use if you want your stove to last the longest. Gasoline and kerosene are the worst things to use in a stove from a maintenance and longevity standpoint.

However, depending on the structure of YOUR nose and cheekbones it might not work. Helemts are really one of those things that you need to try on. Rating for this product: 5 December 22, 2008

This is built bomber. This is a typical Stanley Product. THe outside almost feels like it is powder coated. It has a rubber bottom so it does not slide or tip over easily. It is round on one side and square on the back, so it can not roll way from you. The cap is great too. You know on a nalagen bottle how you have to twist and twist to get the bottle open. With one hard spin the cap comes off. The bottle is made of Stainless Steal and non BPA plastics. The is a great bottle that will last anyone for ever.

That is a great shoe, but I would look at the MSR Denali. Much better traction. It is very durable. About the same price, the binding uses a rubberized strap that will not absorb moisture. One of the problems with the tubbs and atlas bindings is the straps can get all iced up and the straps loosen up. All of these shoes are made in Seattle. Where tubbs are made in China.
