I think almost all rain jackets suck but this one I have enjoyed for at least awhile. Good fit, seems to be waterproof, and relatively few features. Cool.

The North Face Krakatoa 1/2-Zip Hooded Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 25, 2010

This is really more of a windbreaker than a shirt, sort of like a super duper thin softshell. Its pretty breathable and wind resistant and I have been able to wear it for a wide variety of running and hiking conditions. Fits a little on the big side, if you are in between sizes go down.

Long Trail Runs

Gregory Diablo Daypack - 352cu in

Gregory Diablo Daypack - 352cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 25, 2010

Excellent pack for long trail runs. Somehow, it doesn't bounce too much, but that obviously gets worse if you put a lot of weight in it. It has just enough capacity for along run in the mountains. It can hold plenty of bars, a 1L Platypus Hoser reservoir, a rain jacket, a UL windbreaker, and a mini first aid kit.

The only negative about this pack is that it has a very short torso, so if you have a long torso this probably won't work for you. I generally use a "medium" in packs and the Diablo is barely big enough for me.

This a much lighter alternative to my Camelbak. The 1L size fits nicely in my Gregory Diablo pack for long trail runs. I like how you can refill this without taking the hose out of the pack. Brilliant.

La Sportiva Wildcat Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 24, 2010

So far I am really psyched about these shoes. They manage to be pretty cushioned and supportive with out being too heavy and stiff. They run a bit on the wide side, but the lacing system is really great for locking the foot down. Excellent shoe for running on very rugged terrain.

The North Face E 50/50 Bottle Holder

The North Face E 50/50 Bottle Holder

Rating for this product: 5 April 30, 2010

This is awesome because it is so easy to carry. You pretty much don't have to do anything because the handle is more narrow compared to others I've looked at, and the straps just hold it in your hand comfortably. It has room for a couple of gel packets or clif shost block packets so you can really run your butt off.

Space jacket

Marmot Super Mica Jacket - Men's

Marmot Super Mica Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2010

I was right in between small and medium for the regular Mica, so I tried the Super Mica in a small and it fits me perfect. It is just cut a little bit longer with a bit more room in the shoulders. The Lithium color is sort of a bright silver-white color that would fit in nicely on the moon if it had a NASA logo. Overall it is very tough to beat the feature set of this jacket and still weigh 7.9 oz.I just wore this for a run in 35 degrees with wet snow falling for about 40 minutes. I was amazed by the breathability of the fabric, it hardly felt different than my windbreaker! The pit-zips aren't even needed!

Update: The abrasion patches on the jacket have started coming off in less than a year. Thats kind of lame so I am planning on returning it. Overall still a good jacket for summer hiking, etc.

The North Face Cipher Windstopper Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 1, 2010

Its my go to jacket for skiing and biking and it has performed exactly as expected. Its not lined, but is a great weight for skinning hard when it is chilly out. The hood fits really nicely too and very practical. Breathability, wind resistance, and snow resistance are all great too. Plus, it looks really BA.

Marmot Mica Jacket - Men's

Marmot Mica Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 1, 2010

I really wanted to keep this, but I am just in between sizes I guess. I am 5'8" and about 155 pounds and I thought the small fit perfect except that it was really tight across my back. Medium would work, but then the fit was just kind of baggy and the sleeves were long. The fabric is super thin and ridiculously light. It seemed breath well just walking around my house, for whatever thats worth.

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Men's

March 1, 2010

I have a redpoint optimus and a thunder jacket that I occasionally wear under my TNF Heathen Gore-tex Proshell. The Thunder jacket lacks a hood, but otherwise is definitely warmer than the redpoint optimus. I say "occasionally" because I usually find that the redpoint optimus or the thunder under a gore-tex shell is just too warm for most things in Wyoming, unless you are just sitting around.

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Men's

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 1, 2010

I had last years version of this jacket and was bummed about it leaking feathers everywhere. I returned and purchased the new version after a close inspection. This version seems to be completely downproof and it has more loft while the weight is exactly the same (as measured on my own scale, 13.1 oz. size small). The fabric isn't quite as soft as it used to be, but the quality of this jacket is now top notch in my opinion. It has a great performance fit and is in my pack year round.

Black Diamond GlideLite Mohair Mix Kicker Climbing Skin

Black Diamond GlideLite Mohair Mix Kicker Climbing Skin

Rating for this product: 5 February 24, 2010

These allow you to move faster than a snail while skinning. They won't get you through the deepest snow or the steapest hill, but for lower angles and less snow they are perfect. Mine have worked especially well skinning on forest service roads while trying to make it to some God forsaken trailhead that is miles from a plowed road. If you want to move faster with less effort, get these!

Patagonia Capilene 2 T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2010

Fit and feel of this shirt are great. Oddly, it fits very differently than cap 1, the sleeves are much more snug. The only real bummer about the material is that I find it a bit warm for summer. It works better for fall and spring 60 degree days.

Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 6, 2010

The gore-tex paclite is definitely nicer than any of the spray-on waterproof rain jackets out there, but it still doesn't breathe as well as I hoped it would. But, at least it is definitely waterproof. The torso is a little bit on the short end too for me as well. But in the end, the jacket has never really let me down.

Black Diamond Mega Light 4-Person Shelter

Rating for this product: 4 January 6, 2010

This is really spacious but I feel like it might be tight for 4 people. It did a good job when dumped on with snow, but it made the walls cave in a bit and really reduced the amount of room inside. The reason it gets a 4 is because you have to seam seal it, I just think thats lame these days.

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack

Rating for this product: 3 January 5, 2010

It is kind of ridiculously bulky for a bladder, takes up too much space in a backpack and is kind of heavy too. Thankfully you can wiggle the bladder out of it and just use that. The padding is good for keeping water a decent temperature in cold weather. The hose is also obnoxiously long. But, all in all I haven't had any problems with the system breaking or anything and it works as advertised.

Western Mountaineering UltraLite Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2009

The fluffiest down bag I've ever felt. Forget abotu the Helium, Hightail, and Phantom, the WM Ultralite is much better quality at a better weight. I've been darn warm in it down to about 25 degrees, and I'm sure at 20 or a bit lower I would still be fine. But FYI, bottom of the bag is a little underfilled which is no big deal unless you role around all over the tent. Also, it runs short, the regular should probably be rated for 5'10" and under.

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2009

Everyone is always excited about how "this tent fits people over 6 feet tall!" Well I'm finally excited to say that this is the perfect ultra-light tent for people under 6-foot. Backpacker says that two sleeping pads overlap at the end, but two thermarest prolite 3's fit in perfectly with no amount of overlap. There is head room for two people to sit up, you just can't be a big person. REI has the XL version of this tent, go check it out there. There are lots of neat little features like the jake's feet (where the poles attach to the tent body on the bottom). Bonus: my tent for the packaged weight is 3.5 pounds. Only a couple small complaints: the stuff sack it comes with is huge. why? its a small tent? I'm going to use a compression sack instead. The tent comes with 6 stakes, just enough to stake it out, but it also comes with two guylines and no stakes for them. I guess I'll either use rocks or buy a couple MSR needle stakes. Oh well. All in all, a great tent. Rightfully the "Top Ultralight" by Backpacker.
