Salomon Comet 3D GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

May 20, 2012

Hi Norm,
If possible I would try this shoe on (any shoe for that matter). If you are getting blisters and/or discomfort on your toes, you might need a boot with a different shaped last - different than your current hiking boot has. If your current last is straight, maybe you need curved or vice versa. Or maybe you just need a boot with a bigger toe box. I personally find that Salomons fit me better than most boots, and I also find that they tend to run just slightly larger than normal.

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Men's

May 20, 2012

It depends on where the pants need the work. If the length needs to be altered then you will have to deal with the crampon/ski patch on the inside of the lower legs, as well as the zipper and snap on the outside of the lower leg.

Arthur,
The 98.45 is actually the price for both the Large and XL Sizes. Here are the dimensions for the large and XL (they can also be found in the SIZE hyperlink directly under the select options drop down box. Large is 38.8-41.6in, XL is 42.8-45.6in. I think I see the confusion though... the Large chest size measures 98.5 centimeters. good luck!

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

April 20, 2012

The Large will add another inch to the sleeve length. Sounds like you do not want this... so, you can go with the medium and wear only a thin layer underneath. I would have to go with the next size up, though, because the underarm tightness would annoy me more than the sleeve length. Have to pick based on what annoys you the most. The Large will still have a nice athletic fit, too.

Hi Caroline,
In short, yes, if you layer a down jacket under the OR Aspire, you will have a very nice winter layering system, in that the Aspire will give you complete wind and water protection. The winter temps will ultimately determine the amount of insulation needed, though. May need more/less layers under the shell. Good luck!

Either of these shells will be a perfect waterproof layer to keep in the pack in the case of inclement weather. They both weight about the same and are super packable. I have the MH Stretch Cohesion in DryQ Core, and absolutely love it. For me the fit is spot on. I'm 6 185 and the Large is perfect. I think the Cohesion is about a half inch to an inch longer in length, and features a nice athletic cut. Maybe it comes down to fit, as they both are very similar for the purpose you need.

Not very durable, bad pair perhaps

KEEN Alamosa Hiking Shoe - Men's

KEEN Alamosa Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 April 10, 2012

After 1-2 hikes, the sole started tearing away on/around a few of the lugs, and also separating from the upper. On the particular color I have, the yellow paint on the sole started flaking off, as well as the grey paint on the other parts of the sole. The shoe was comfortable, however, so I'm happy with that aspect. The durability issues on the pair that I received will limit it to a non-trail shoe, but more of a coffee shop shoe. Keen customer service was very helpful and rectified the problem.

KEEN Targhee ll Hiking Shoe - Women's

April 5, 2012

I've had good luck with some Keens - both the Klamath boots and Alki Lace shoes has been great. However, I have gotten a bad one as well in the Alamosa hiking shoe. I've never seen a shoe that degraded so quickly. Like you mention, the sole delaminated in chunks, and it was just simply trash. For that reason, I have a hard time buying Keens in general, even though they are super comfy. I have heard great things about the Targhee shoe, however. But, depending on the build, you could get a hold of a bad batch.

SmartWool NTS Microweight Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 4, 2012

This microweight top performs great for constant or stop and go activity in the mountains. When it gets damp from perspiration, it continues to insulate and feels nice against the skin, and then dries quickly. The fit is nice and trim, with plenty of length for tucking and staying in place. You can even throw 'em in the dryer at wash time. Highly recommended!

The inside actually isn't crunchy at all. The garmet is tightly woven polyester, and while it won't feel like fleece, it should feel OK against the skin. Salomon Toundra Mid WP Winter Boot - Men's

March 5, 2012

At a 45 degree angle, I don't think the boot is stiff enough to safely and securely hold the crampon in place. I would not hesitate to use a strap on style crampon, on this boot in general trekking, and snow/ice crossing situations where the terrain was mostly flat. But, that angle is too severe especially in a 'no fall' situation. The boot itself is nice, however, and will provide plenty of warmth and a general 'non specific' winter boot fit. Very durable as well! Good Luck.

Hestra Heli Mitten

March 4, 2012

Hi mgl,
The Black Diamond Mercury mitten is definitely warm, and a superb cold weather mitten. I have a pair and absolutely love them. From everything that I've read, the Heli Mitt is an awesome mitt as well, and could provide some dexterity over the Mercury mitten, but you would loose a tiny bit of warmth. As far as longevity, both are of top quality construction using goatskin leather. The only thing I've ever heard about the Mercury Mitt is that the insulation (removable primaloft insert) looses some of its loft after a long period of hard use. But, I've seen those same mittens worn on neg 20 days in Vermont, so clearly, they still insulate. So, I don't think you'll go wrong with either, but will get a bit more warmth out of the Mercury Mitt. By the way, my next mitt will be the Heli Mitt. Good luck!

Salomon XADV 89 Grip Ski

February 28, 2012

For Rossi BCX 11 boots and Voile CRB bindings, the Salomon XADV skis make a decent setup. You could use a lighter binding, like the Voile 3 Pin (or 3 pin with cable). In Vermont, you may want to use a heavier boot (and warmer) like the Garmont Excursion. This boot, paired with that binding, and perhaps the Rossi BC 125 would make a nice setup. Although, you will loose some kick and glide. If you want more glide, pick a skinnier ski, lighter setup.

Asolo Power Matic 200 GV Boot - Men's

February 23, 2012

They are actually similar in construction. Both use the same thickness leather (2.6 - 2.8mm thick). Both are lined with Gore-Tex. Both use the same lasting board. The difference is in the sole. The 520 uses the TPS (triple power structure) which uses shock absorbers in the areas of the foot that receive the most impact. The sole of the 200 uses 3 different densities of PU that are strategically located for different things: stability, comfort and shock absorption. The 200 has pulleys in the lacing system, and are a bit lighter in weight than the 520s. Lastly, the 520s have a deeper lugged sole. I would give a slight nod to the 520 as being a bit heavier duty.

Outdoor Research Aria Down Hooded Jacket - Women's

February 23, 2012

Yes, you can count on the fabric to have a DWR applied. Some DWR coatings are very durable and last, and some don't. Just keep in mind that the fabric will be only slightly water resistant. If you are exposed to anything more than some passing snowflakes, or very light brief drizzle of rain, then you'll want to protect the jacket with a full waterproof, or use a synthetic jacket in wetter climates. With down insulation, protecting your insulation is especially important on extended backcountry trips.

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Jacket - Women's

February 22, 2012

If you are looking for additional warmth or functionality OVER the Nano Puff, then you probably won't find it with the TNF Redpoint. There are differences between the two: The Redpoint uses a bit more insulation inside their jacket (it's Primaloft Eco, partly recycled). The Nano uses less insulation, but a higher 'quality' insulation (Primaloft One). So, with warmth in mind, the Redpoint may only be slightly warmer. The face fabric on the Redpoint is burlier, so it will be a bit tougher. The Nano will be quite a bit lighter (4-5 oz) and more packable. Hope that helps you.

I'm a 32 or 33 in the waist, with a 32 inseam and the mediums fit perfect. I think the smalls will work, unless you have huge quads. They do stretch a bit as well.
