Mountain Hardwear Compressor Insulated Hooded Jacket - Men's
January 6, 2012
The older version of this jacket (2009 model, I believe) had a huge and floppy hood with no adjustment cords...so it always just flopped around unless it was pulled over a helmet.
The new version has a smaller, articulated hood...you can pull some drawstrings tight and the hood will move with your head, instead of your head rotating IN you hood.
In my opinion, this is the single biggest improvement on this newer version over the older version. I wear the hood under the helmet sometimes.
Whatever pops your cork, I suppose, but I LOVE the newer version of this jacket.
I guess the happy medium would have been the same big hood but with 2 adjustment points ala Arc T...

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's
November 8, 2011
These boots won't cut it on Denali unless you get extremely fortunate with weather. The Spantiks are next up on the warmth scale (in the La Sportiva line, anyway), and even with those boots people typically use an overboot above 17Camp (40 Below Purple Haze...etc...)
I wore my Millet Everest boots the entire time, even low on the Kahiltna, and didn't regret it.

Millet Everest GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Essentially the same boot. I wore the Millets on Denali..still have my toes. Saw lots of these and lots of the Mons, as well. Can't really go wrong with either.

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Down Parka - Men's
December 3, 2010
Just wanted to chip in and say that I'm 5'6"/135 and a size S is HUGE on me. Almost debilitatingly so, even...it's hard to do things while wearing it that require a high degree of ambulation. Mine has high-altitude dinner spill stains on it, for example.
I just don't think a size L an a 5'-10" dude would be the right choice. Maybe a medium? Just my two cents...

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Men's
August 10, 2010
Does anybody have a practical comparison of this puff to the MH Compressor?
I realize the MH Compressor is synth and this is down...
They are both essentially the same weight.
Anybody have experience with both of these in regards to pack-down size?
I know that "warmth" is fairly subjective, but does this 800-fill down provide more warmth that the MH primaloft for the weight?
Also...the thing I can't stand about the MH Compressor is that the hood is so floppy.
Does this have any sort of three point hood adjustment similar to ArcTeryx hardshell hoods?
Anybody compared this to a Feathered Friends Helios Hooded?

Optimus Nova Stove
July 16, 2009
Anybody have any input on the version of this stove that actually ships?
You can't see it in the product photo, but the shipping version of this stove has an on/off knob built onto the pump near the shank/sleeve that connects to the fuel line hose. I have an older version of this stove (all silver...no black...no green...2005 model, I believe...) that does not have such a knob built into the pump. The only on/off is controlled via the simmer lever on the burner and the orientation of the bottle itself. Why the triple-redundant on/off functionality?
(On/off based on the orientation of the bottle...on/off based on the state of the knob on the pump....on/off based on the state of the simmer lever on the burner...)
Also, the version that I has different connector shank...it firmly snaps into place...no need to twist, like you have to with this version. The first time I tried this version it leaked whitegas from that twist shank...not cool.
