Metolius Rope Ranger Bag - 1368cu in

Metolius Rope Ranger Bag - 1368cu in

Rating for this product: 5 4 days ago

Got the rope bag after climbing with a friend that had this. Its so convenient keeping the rope on the tarp and then just stowing it away wrapped up into the bag. Fits my 60 m rope perfectly. Way more efficient than carrying a bulky tarp or just slinging the rope on your shoulders. Good investment!

Good lightweight layer..

Outdoor Research Notion Insulated Jacket - Women's

Outdoor Research Notion Insulated Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 4 days ago

Saw this on steepandcheap.com and had to get it. I've been wanting a lightweight extra layer type jacket and this is a good alternative (esp. in terms of price) to the down sweater that I was originally eyeing. The sleeves are definitely a little short when you raise your arms up, but the elastic isn't too tight for me (got an XS). Since it isn't exactly backpacking season anymore, I've been using it as an extra layer under my snowboard shell and adds better warmth than just a hoodie. For the price on SAC, I can deal with the sleeves issue.

Ok for my first snowboarding boot..

Salomon Ivy Snowboard Boot - Women's

Salomon Ivy Snowboard Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 5 days ago

I've never worn any other boot so I have nothing to compare, but when I first got it they were great. One of the few women's boots that have a size 4.5! The lacing system was really easy and helped tighten things up quickly. I rode pretty hard last season though and they got beat up pretty quick. Toward the end of the season the laces would loosen up through the day and I'd have to tighten them up again. I've hiked in them for some untouched pow and they felt fine on my feet. The faux fur lining is pretty kush too. On all day sessions though, I'd notice that my feet were a bit wet by the end of the day. I'd say its a good beginner boot, but I've since progressed into more freestyle and will probably retire them this season.

Really impressed with North Face shoes..

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Hiking Shoe - Women's

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Hiking Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 1, 2009

These are my second pair of North Face shoes and I'm getting more and more impressed with NF footwear. They are definitely waterproof. Not exactly the most attractive sports shoe in my opinion. I mainly use them for trail running and occassional hiking. I had to replace the original insole with superfeets because I developed plantar faciitis when I first started running in them, but I've never had a problem since. Once these fall apart, I'll probably go for the Mid size model for the extra ankle support.

prAna Asana Yoga Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 November 1, 2009

I got these in an X-Small and did not expect them to be as loose and baggy as they are. They are also long, but then again I am short. Still, they are really comfy.

Great ankle support

La Sportiva Glacier Mountaineering Boot - Women's

La Sportiva Glacier Mountaineering Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

These are definitely heavier than standard hiking boots, but I've been wearing them all summer for work and my feet feel great. Never had trouble breaking them in and they really wrap around your ankles for support. Used them as wildland fire boots as well, but started to notice the rubber on the toe part is kind of peeling back probably from a lot of contact with ash.

My favorite top!

Patagonia Morning Glory Halter Top - Women's

Patagonia Morning Glory Halter Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

I went climbing and saw another woman wearing this halter and I knew I had to have it too. This halter is really flattering and I love the back cut. I like that it is longer than most tops and I love that you don't have to wear a bra. This is the best halter top with built it support (granted I'm only a B cup). Great for climbing in and I just wear it around the house all the time too. I got it in the blue and I'm almost tempted to get the other colors now.

Appearances don't matter in the backcountry..

Sea To Summit Mosquito Head Net

Sea To Summit Mosquito Head Net

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

I used to make fun of my friend who would say that having one of these was a must have. After hearing numerous rumors about how buggy it was going to be in the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, I got one before the trip. Thank god! Just wearing it over a simple baseball cap made all the difference. Seeing my friends without one suffering through the bugs made me so grateful to have this. It packs away so tiny, its worth it to just carry it around on every hike just in case.

Better than the whisperlite..

Optimus Nova Stove

Optimus Nova Stove

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

I've used the whisperlite on numerous occasions and it will always be a good white gas stove for its price, but I've had too many experiences where it just crapped out on me. If you are willing to spend a little extra money I'd say get this one. What won me over was that you can practically use any type of fuel with this stove, which is important to me since I travel abroad often. This is my second summer using it and I've never had a problem with this stove. Its really easy to put together and prime, very user friends. All my friends who are used to the whisperlite are always suprised and impressed with the nova. I really like the on/off feature where you just lie the bottle from one side to the other, allowing or blocking fuel from entering the hose. My stove has never broke on me yet and in the the summer I use it every weekend.

I love this shoe!

The North Face Smedge Approach Shoe - Women's

The North Face Smedge Approach Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

I've worn these shoes doing everything from hiking, running, and even rafting (forgot my water shoes). The green is an awesome color and I get complemented all the time for them. I've worn them practically everyday for over a year and I just started to notice some wear on them. Because they are made of that airy breathable material, my feet do tend to get dirty after hiking on really dusty trails. Also, these shoes are way better to hike up to Half Dome in than hiking boots because of the rubbery grip. If they made a water proof version of these it'd be the perfect shoe. Once my pair craps out on me, I will probably get another pair. North Face please don't ever stop making these!!

Tents are expensive, but its totally worth it!

Mountain Hardwear Skyledge 2.1 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Mountain Hardwear Skyledge 2.1 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

I bought a cheap tent one summer while working on a trail crew and with my luck it rained for two weeks straight and I was miserable. After that I decided to do my research and find the best tent out there for me. I've used this for 2 summers now and in downpours and its kept me dry. Really easy to put up. The all over mesh is great for for mosquito filled nights to look at the stars and the little window on the rainfly is a cute plus. Myself and my boyfriend, who is 6 feet tall, fit into this tent nice and snuggly.

Will never go back to synthetic!

Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

After using a 20 degree synthetic bag all summer one year, sleeping cold and miserably, I decided that I'll spend the money and get a good down bag. Best choice I've ever made! I've never been cold once using this and I've used this through spring to fall in the Sierras. Its been the perfect size for me being 5'1 and packs small in a medium sized compression sack. The outer material feels really thin and flimsy sometimes, so I try to be careful with it.

Doesn't really block the wind..

Cloudveil Gridlock Full-Zip Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's

Cloudveil Gridlock Full-Zip Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 1, 2009

I got the 2007 model. I love this fleece and wear it all the time, but I noticed that it doesn't exactly block the wind. Then again it isn't advertised as fully windproof. I got it in the x-small and I'm 5'1 and 114 lbs. It is the perfect fit, but I rarely use the hood, the hood is way too small on me. Can't use the hood with a pony tail and zipping the fleece up all the way with the hood on makes me feel like I'm wearing a swim cap. Should have gone a size up. The fuzzy inner lining is the best!

Best rain jacket so far!

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2009

Strictly as a rain jacket, this one has been the best for me. I work for the Park Service and wore this doing field work in the torrential rain. I was the only one that was bone dry at the end of the day. I got it in this very light blue color, which tends to get dirty real easily, but that's negligible. The only tiny detail that was a con for me, personally, was that the jacket wasn't as long as I would ideally like, the pockets are kind of small, and since its pro-shell gore-tex the jacket can be a little loud (I was told to take the jacket off during my road test because it was distracting!) Other than that it does its job, I would especially hope so for its price!

Good lightweight rain gear for the price..

Marmot PreCip Pant - Kids'

Marmot PreCip Pant - Kids'

Rating for this product: 4 November 1, 2009

I'm 5'1 and 114 lbs. I bought the kids precip pants since its less expensive than the adult's. It does its job, but not the most breathable thing (but what rain gear is anyways!) Its thin and lightweight and I take both the jacket and pants with me whenever I hike or backpack. Only down side, I have to remove my boots in order to put the pants on. This might have to do with the fact that I bought the children's size since the adult model is a little different.

Good backpacking rain gear, versatile..

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Women's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 1, 2009

Both the Precip jacket and the pants are lightweight and pack small enough for backpacking. The jacket does tend to stick to my skin if I'm hiking hard while wearing it, but there really isn't such thing as a completely breathable rain jacket. I use it as an extra layer in the summer in the Sierras, since I noticed that it traps heat pretty well. Also, since I don't use DEET for mosquitos, I've worn this jacket while hiking and not a single bite!

Great beginner shoe

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Women's

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 1, 2009

Let me tell you getting the right size climbing shoes is a huge deal. This was my very first pair of climbing shoes, not too aggressive which is good for newbies. I wear a size 5 in regular shoes and got them that size, should have went a half size smaller. Still used them and they did the job. I got the slightly more arched La Sportiva Viper in the correct size and boy did my climbing drastically get better! The only complaint is that the laces are super long and I have to wrap them under my arch twice before tying them.
