Best Peripheral Lighting

Princeton Tec Corona Headlamp

Princeton Tec Corona Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2009

This headlamp has the best range of vision of any headlamp that I have used. I have several headlamps for caving and I would have to say that this is my favorite. The range is not quite as good as a 3 watt LED, as the Princeton Tec Apex has, but it is pretty comparable. I highly recommend this headlamp for any activity.

Great carabiner for a decent price. The keylock feature is pretty nice, as it never snags. It seems to be pretty light and well built.

Great Flashlight

Princeton Tec Amp Series Flashlight

Princeton Tec Amp Series Flashlight

Rating for this product: 5 June 26, 2009

I have had one of the amp 5.0 and it has been great so far. The single maxbright is great for distance and the three ultrabright do really well for a short range dispersed light mode. The battery life seems to be pretty good. It also seems to be pretty rugged and it is water and dust resistant, so I have no complaints.

Sterling PowerCord Cordelette - 6mm

June 24, 2009

I noticed that the impact force going from pounds force to kilonewtons does not add up in the item description. 4800 lbf should be about 21.4 kN, not 7.2 kN. So what is the correct breaking strength for this cord, 21.4 kN or 7.2 kN?

Great daypack

Black Diamond Demon Backpack - 1831-1953cu in

Black Diamond Demon Backpack - 1831-1953cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 18, 2009

This pack has plenty of room for a day's worth of climbing gear and other necessities. I have a 3 liter camelbak and it fits fine, however, it is a little tall for the attachment loop. The zipper is good and sturdy and the nylon seems pretty tough.

Good backup

Princeton Tec Pilot LED Light

Princeton Tec Pilot LED Light

Rating for this product: 5 June 17, 2009

I have one of these attached to both of my primary headlamps for caving and they seem to be well built. The light output is not great, but it does its job. It is nice having it attached right to the headlamp, so there is no fumbling around for the spare light source in the dark.

Good Rope

Beal Flyer II 10.2mm Golden Dry Rope

Beal Flyer II 10.2mm Golden Dry Rope

Rating for this product: 5 June 17, 2009

This is a great rope that feeds smooth. It comes with a pretty decent rope bag and it is marked at the halfway point. I have had the rope for a few months now and it seems to be wearing really well.

Good Carabiner

Petzl Am'D Locking Carabiner

Petzl Am'D Locking Carabiner

Rating for this product: 4 June 16, 2009

I have a couple of these carabiners in a Triact-lock. The lock is secure, yet quick and easy to open one-handed. They are a little more money than some other carabiners, but still pretty good for the price.

Good carabiner for the price

Black Diamond Quicksilver Screwgate Carabiner

Black Diamond Quicksilver Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 4 June 16, 2009

This is a good, lightweight, and inexpensive carabiner. Sure, there are better carabiners, but not for the price range. I have several of these and they have held up really well for anchoring.

Good headlamp

Princeton Tec Eos Headlamp

Princeton Tec Eos Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 June 16, 2009

This is a great multi-purpose headlamp. It is sturdy and can handle some water and dust. It is fairly comfortable to wear and is not nearly as bulky as the Apex. The only complaint I have is that the light tends to be focused in a single beam. Many of the multi-LED headlamps have a better short range dispersed light with greater battery life, however this light has a much better range on it, so it depends on what you want the light for.

Battery Compartment not well built

Petzl MYO RXP Headlamp

Petzl MYO RXP Headlamp

Rating for this product: 3 June 16, 2009

I use this headlamp for caving and I love the flip up lens for dispersed light and the programmable feature is great for getting the ideal battery life/light output combination. The only problem with it is the battery pack. It has a cover that is simply a flexible sleeve which fits over the batteries. It is not dust or water resistant at all. This is a good headlamp, but not for wet or dusty conditions.

Good Headlamp

Princeton Tec Apex Headlamp

Princeton Tec Apex Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 June 16, 2009

This is a good caving headlamp that I have taken on many trips. It seems to be pretty water and dust resistant and takes abuse fairly well. I also have a Petzl Myo RXP that doesn't seem nearly as heavy duty. I walked into a basalt roof and hit the front of the lens very hard, and it came out with a hairline crack.

I have used this helmet for climbing and caving and it works great for both. The headlamp clips are decent and you barely notice that the helmet is on.

Decent 8

Black Diamond Super 8 Belay/Rappel Device

Black Diamond Super 8 Belay/Rappel Device

Rating for this product: 4 June 16, 2009

I have used this as a backup belay device and a rappel device. It works good for rappels, but it does not have great friction for a heavier climber.

Great Belay Device

Black Diamond ATC-XP

Black Diamond ATC-XP

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2009

The ATC-XP works great and makes belaying easy with the high friction side, but also allows for a smooth rappel with the low friction side. I have had it for a year and a half now and it is still going great.
