The North Face Free Thinker II Jacket - Men's

December 1, 2009

When I bought my Free Thinker last season I was about your height, and a bit fatter and the L fit terrifically. Still fits great with losing quite a bit of weight. I would say an L for sure.

Absolutely fantastic

686 Smarty Original Cargo Pant - Men's

686 Smarty Original Cargo Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2009

These pants are awesome. I'm a skier and have been in search of a pant with cargo pockets (I like pockets that are on top of the leg, not within the leg, so as not to put pressure on your legs when bending around), good breathability (with vents), good fit, stylish looks, and last but very importantly removable insulation. It took me forever to find the perfect pants but I finally did thanks to a friend that boards. These pants have it all: tons of pockets (plenty of them with great closure and with excellent touches like sub-pockets for locker keys, hook/clasps for attaching car keys, etc), hooks for lift passes, vents, jacket snaps to keep the powder skirt attached on heavy powder days, very comfortable fit that's not overly baggy (I prefer a slim yet comfortable fit), and style! Most importantly is the KILLER fleece track pant liner that zips into the pant for use on cold days. I LOVE this liner! The liner even has snaps on the legs for rolling up the legs and snapping into a 3/4 position, perfect for skiers (686 sells a Smarty Access pant with liners that are only 3/4 length, but these I couldn't find these anywhere to check out). For you boarders the gaiters have Boa slots (that close with hook/loop fastener covers if you don't need 'em) and a small 8mm/10mm wrench in a stash pocket near the end of one leg that doubles as a bottle opener. I can't say enough about these pants :)

Smith I/O Interchangeable Goggle

February 15, 2009

Doesn't look like backcountry.com carries them at the momment. Try google.Try the Smith website. Be warned, they're a bit pricey.Smith has told me they're out of stock on many lenses right now, but will be back in stock soon. 1/29/09It came with two lenses when I bought mine. (low light one, and all around one) On the Smith website they only show 1 other lens (high light one) on their little goggle simulator thing. It also comes with a 'hard case' (kinda moderately soft/hard in my opinion) and a microfiber bag.Actually the lenses available on smithoptics.com vary depending on their stock. So if the lens you're looking for isn't available, you need to just keep checking. This came from their Customer Service folks as I was waiting for a clear lens (which finally showed up after 3 weeks of waiting).

Smith I/O Interchangeable Goggle

Smith I/O Interchangeable Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2009

That's what I kept saying to myself on my recent ski trip with these, using the ignitor lens multiple days. I loved them. Fitment was great, absolutely zero fog, great clarity, and the ignitor lens was fantastic from dawn to dusk. I reeeeeally like the hard case it came with too that holds the gogles AND the sensor lens for overcast days (which i'm familiar with as I use it on my smith prodigy goggles I replaced), and has a few more slots for other lenses. Just a great product... just try to catch it on sale :)

Mountain Hardwear Vertical Jacket - Men's

January 29, 2009

If I recall correctly the sidewinder has one internal pocket. This one has three. I had the sidewinder SV and decided against it for this reason. This jacket is less "crinkly" than the sidewinder SV. Can't say for the AR. Neither feels like a softshell as neither is a softshell. The sidewinder's fabric is stiffer, which I believe is because it's 3-layer compared to this being 2-layer.

Found a flaw

The North Face Free Thinker Pant - Men's

The North Face Free Thinker Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 January 21, 2009

Found a pretty bad flaw skiing in these with high winds. The vent zips are poorly protected and when I had wind from behind I could feel the wind right through the vent zipper (it's one long continuous zipper across your rear). Unacceptable... my cheap hyvent north face pants don't have this flaw and I won't accept it from $400 pants.

Smith I/O Interchangeable Goggle

Smith I/O Interchangeable Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 January 15, 2009

Wondering why this costs so much? Awesome goggle with a sleek look, great field of vision, and has a clasp in the middle of the strap for easy on/off. Includes BOTH an Ignitor Lens (for bright light) and a Sensor Lens (for low light) both with the dual-layer tech with a filter to minimize fogging. Includes a goggle bag. Includes a HARD case that has a section for extra lenses! Now do you get why this costs so much? :) This is a badass goggle package with two great lenses from Smith that do their respective jobs very well. The only thing I think this needs is a clear lens for night skiing, which can be bought I think for around $25 last I checked.

DAKINE Split Convertible Bag - 6425cu in

Got a hold of Dakine and asked them. Seems they've changed the design in the last year or so from three separate pockets on the underside of the top half to one large pocket.

Mountain Hardwear Vertical Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Vertical Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I love this jacket. Hand pockets where I want them (I hate how some north face raise them up), removable hood (that works well! even with a helmet) and powder skirt, plenty of internal pockets (mp3 player with passthrough from front chest as well as internal, goggle, chest pocket and arm pocket (nice for goggle cloth), flip down ski pass holder (velcros out up and out of the way if you don't need it, and is attached by elastic fabric for give), additional ring for attaching lift tickets, nice suede-like material inside the neck/chin area that is comfortable (don't see this on many shell jackets and it's a niiiice touch), a fold-over hook/loop overlap for the front of the entire main zipper (I prefer this to maximize wind protection), and lastly the fabric is looped over the top of the zipper so that the inner protection flap (that keeps your chin/lips from rubbing on the zipper) doesn't move (if you've had a jacket that has a flimsy flap this is a pain in the butt... like my Descente jacket). This is just a well designed jacket. The only negative is that the fabric doesn't feel like 3 layer pro shell, but I can't seem to confirm my hunch (comparing it to an Arcteryx Sidewinder SV I have which is the 480N 3-layer pro-shell). I unfortunately can't comment yet on how durable the jacket is, or how water/windproof it is as I haven't gotten it out to the slopes yet. At a glance though this is a badass jacket and I wish other manufacturers would take a look at these really simple features and add them.

Marmot Ultimate Ski Glove

Marmot Ultimate Ski Glove

Rating for this product: 2 January 4, 2009

Tight fit. Has a removable polartec windstopper liner that is sewn poorly so that you feel the edges of the fabric at the seams inside the liners. Overall gloves are built VERY well and high quality... but unless you have really thin fingers they fit awfully tight. Going up a size isn't the answer either (I tried large and xL, and xl was just longer).

DAKINE Split Convertible Bag - 6425cu in

January 3, 2009

Would someone that owns this bag post pics of the pockets? Asking as I'd seen it in stores and the underside of the top half has zippered side pockets just big enough to hold boots, and a zippered center section. This is what I wanted as I could use that half when at a resort as my gear bag up to the slopes. I ordered it (from another source unfortunately) and the bag I received, despite being the correct model number and name, had just one big zipper pocket on the underside of the top half. I'm not sure if perhaps I bought an older model/version of the bag or what.

Mountain Hardwear Vertical Jacket - Men's

December 30, 2008

This jacket will fit fairly snug. There seems to be a bit of room for layering but not a ton of room. In my experience when manufacturers say "performance" fit they mean that they expect you to be working harder than the average joe so you don't need quite as much layering but that's just what I've seen. Hope that helps.I'm usually a Large in jackets, sometimes an XL, and on this jacket the Large was just too snug a fit that I wouldn't be able to layer well and it was a bit too snug around the ski pants. I am ordering an XL.

Black Diamond Guide Glove - Men's

December 23, 2008

Tough decision. The materials seem to be about the same, both great brands. Its unfortunate that the BD are lacking the wrist cinch, but they also have to addition of the Pittards goatskin(almost indestructible). I'm sure warmth won't be a factor, as they will both get the job done. In my opinion, if I didn't get my BD Renegade gloves for a steal at the beginning of the season, I would have went for the BD Guide Gloves hands down over the Marmot Ultimate Guide even though I am highly partial to Marmot gear most of the time. The Marmot Ultimate Guides fit way too tightly. I tried large which I usually wear and just sitting still they felt constricting on my fingers, and if I bent them at all forget about it. I tried XL and those were just as bad! Also, the opening on the liners for the Marmot's are barely big enough to get your hands through so it's just frustrating putting the gloves on. While the Marmot's have better materials, the fit is so awful that I chose the BD Guides as my glove.

Comfy! but lacking in features

Black Diamond Guide Glove - Men's

Black Diamond Guide Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 16, 2008

The dexterity in the glove is great. The fitment is great... just the right fit where it's not too tight (I wear large). The gloves are very warm. The entire interior of the gloves remove making this a complete shell glove with removable liner. What's even cooler is the hook and loop attachment for the liner goes around the entire glove in a circle, making it compatible with old liners from other gloves! This lets me use thinner liners from old gloves for warmer days :-D That's the good. The bad: no idiot strap (c'mon, it's 2008), no back-of-the-hand pocket for warmers (not mandatory but it's nice), really cheap and stiff gauntlet closure cord and lock (I worry they'll break because you really have to pull hard on it to close it) that is difficult to close and open, and no wrist cinch strap (I prefer to have these).

Not goretex

Marmot Snowdrift Glove

Marmot Snowdrift Glove

Rating for this product: 4 December 16, 2008

The waterproofing is not Goretex despite the tech specs listed here. Really nice glove! Fleece liners, with hook and loop attachement on the inside to hold them in place. Unlike the Marmot Ultimate Guide glove, these liners are just the right amount of loose so you can go in and out of them without pulling them out of the glove. Overall great fitment in the entire glove. Loose enough for great dexterity without constricting my hands in a large size. Idiot straps that cinch easily as well as quality gauntlet closure. They feel decently warm... I'd imagine they'd be good for 20 deg weather, but not much colder. Overall a great deal for the price.

Meh

DAKINE Titan Gloves

DAKINE Titan Gloves

Rating for this product: 3 December 11, 2008

Generally the glove is pretty good quality. Nice pocket I guess for IDs or warmers on the back of your hand. Fits comfortably on me in a large size, and feels warm. I didn't wear them out in the weather as I'm returning them. Why? The liners suck. They are your basic stretchy liners that don't attach to the gloves. You could buy some cheap polypropelene liners in a store to get the same thing. I realize this is a personal taste but I much prefer functional liners that attach to the gloves (so they don't come out when I pull my hand out) but also ones that are thick enough to be used outside the gloves, which these really aren't. If those types of liners are ok with you (and apparently they are with lots of people because the majority of gloves out there are this way), then this is a damned nice glove :) Wish I could keep it!

Meh, not my kind of glove...

Marmot Ultimate Guide Glove

Marmot Ultimate Guide Glove

Rating for this product: 3 December 9, 2008

I just ordered these. Holy crap are they stiff. I can barely bend my fingers. I have issues gripping a ski pole completely. I comfortably wear a large glove and bought these in large, but they are a very tight fit. My hand feels constricted within the gloves, but the finger tip lengths and general dimensions are right so I don't think a larger size is the solution. Also, the shell feels as if it wasn't sized properly for the already snug liner, so wearing both feels extra tight. Lastly, getting in and out of the liners is a pain as for some reason the designers felt they should make the opening just barely big enough to put your hand through, making it quite an ordeal to pull them over your hands. The liner interior wasn't cut/sewn all that well and you feel the edges of the fabric at the seems, which I think is poor craftmanship as I don't have this issue with other liners. Lastly, I wasn't happy that there's no back of the hand pocket for warmers and such, but might not be necessary on such a warm glove.

With all the negativity, I will say that the build quality is generally excellent. I do like that there's hook and loop to hold in the liners, which is a key factor in my purchase, although with the liners' snug fit the hook and loop often doesn't keep them liners from pulling out on your hands. The gloves feel like they'll keep me very warm, used for the coldest of weather. I don't know for sure as I am most likely going to return them.

Liners aren't wool despite the description here.
