  • Stomping Grounds:

Triathlete / Telemark skiing / bad climber
  • Bio:

Mainly inbounds stuff and longer touring - G3 Barons with G3 Ascent bindings. Used to ski to stay in shape for tri season. Now living in Thailand and have picked up climbing. I'm so bad at it, I just can't quit.

great rope for thailand

Sterling Marathon Mega Rope - 11.2mm

Sterling Marathon Mega Rope - 11.2mm

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2009

i'm posted in thailand and when climbing the sharp limestone at crazy horse or down in krabi, i like the durable sheath, 70m (dry, of course) length and lightweight of this rope. it's not the softest handling rope in the world, but hey, i knew exactly what rope i wanted and for what purpose.

some reviewer expressed dismay that it wasn't more colorful. mine is bright frickin orange - people actually commented on how bright it was.

other reviewers have expressed this, but it's worth mentioning again... despite the product description (when i bought it in July), the 70m rope does NOT have a center mark or dual-pattern (although, i think that backcountry may have deleted this in the description).

only sunblock i'll use

Kinesys SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray 4oz

Kinesys SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray 4oz

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2009

i've used kinesys since it came out (old timer reference to enhance authenticity of review). i've raced several ironman races and i've never been burned. it goes on quick, stays on even in shafing areas and on sweaty salty skin (note - when doing long races, don't be an idiot... please reapply as necessary).
my only gripe is that the bottle can get greasy after using the spray nozzle, but this isn't kinesys's fault... i've never found a spray nozzle that didn't leak. my trick - leave big bottle at home, and bring the (and use the whole thing) small 1oz. bottle when traveling for races.

Review Title

Ocean Minded Mokulua Sandal - Men's

Ocean Minded Mokulua Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 September 23, 2009

I've had these for several weeks and can't walk in them due to extreme discomfort. if you have super fat feet, these might work for you, but the straps are just too big for my feet. for anyone who has ever walked more than 5 feet in flip flops (especially on surfaces like a sandy beach) you know you don't want all that extra volume. from a company called "ocean minded", you'd think they'd think of that.
on a positive, the leather is very plush and comfy, but don't get them wet as you'll be sliding everywhere (hmmm... ocean and wet usually go hand in hand). after a good washing, they are now my indoor slippers.

Not quite black

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2009

I have a narrow, low-volume foot, and these fit very well, nice and snug, good ach support. the better the fit, the less friction, and therefore fewer blisters.
my only complaint was that the flip flops had a "black" tag on them, but they were clearly the rold rush brown color. Either the Backcountry shipping guys are color blind, or they were heading out the door to go climbing. i'd send them back for a color change, but seriously... who notices the color of men's flip flops?

Baron is a great all round ski

G3 The Baron All Mountain Ski

G3 The Baron All Mountain Ski

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2008

I bought these last season and have a tele set-up. These things are sick... from groomed runs to skinning up, they are probably the most versatile ski i've been on. sure, if you have the coin and the time to tinker around with a bunch of different types of skis, then i'd roll with the el hombre for serious powder days. i travel a ton and by default, end up as a bit of a minimalist, so if you only have the time or the cash and enjoy hiking OB, heli and hike, or whatever, then these will be a great ski for you.
