The North Face Pharak Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Pharak Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 2, 2009

Overall the fleece is very nice. The stretch panels on the sides are a plus. I have worn it quite a bit this spring and now into fall. The negative thing about this is the fit is a bit longer than I would have liked and it seems to be an athletic cut. A drawstring at the bottom would have been nice but it doesn't have that-would have helped since it fit me long. I would recommend this jacket still. Not as hot as the Khumbu and I like the stretch panels for better breathability and movement. I am 5'8 185lbs if that helps. I got the M

DAKINE Mission Backpack - 1600cu in

September 17, 2009

It's a good size. I also have the Dakine Terminal 2100 cause I thought I wanted a bigger pack but then realized it was too big. I could fit a ton of stuff in the 2100 Cu In but never needed that much. So I bought this one as well. I like it a lot better as far as size goes. Much more practical. I put my 15" laptop in it, and that leaves me with 4-6 inches of depth to put books and stuff in.

Brunton Helios Stormproof Lighter

Brunton Helios Stormproof Lighter

Rating for this product: 5 August 6, 2009

I like this lighter. works well and burns hot. Almost too hot. The flame is so hot when starting a fire it burns up the tinder. It seems to burn fairly efficient too. I have not filled it up much even though I have used it a ton and play with it all the time. It is pretty durable as well. Mine was thrown from my jeep on a bumpy road and shows no scars. Is it a necessary item? probably not unless wind is a huge factor. Using it with the brunton fuel tool to refill it is also a nice feature. but really I bought it cause it makes a cool jet engine sound when lit :)

Prolite Plus is killer. I have used it a bunch on top of snow and in 0 degree temps. I am pretty sure the Neo will not be a good option in snowy cold temps based on the R-Value (I think is 2.5).

Using it in conjunction with a z-lite is an option as stated previously but why add the extra bulk-unless space is not an issue. I have both and use the prolite in the winter/snow and Neo the rest of the year

Sorel Conquest Boot - Men's

Sorel Conquest Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

tight at first, took a few trips sledding with the kids before I really got a great fit. I usually wear a 9.5 and ordered a 9.5. they actually felt tight but once they broke in the insulation formed around my foot and now they fit very nice. The toe is a little clumsy cause it is so tall but once I got used to it I didn't notice. The main reason I chose these was 400grams of insulation and they are very light for such a heavy duty boot. got 1 full winter in them with multiple snowshoeing trips and really very pleased. I would by them again.

Brunton Glorb - Refillable Butane Lantern

Rating for this product: 4 July 10, 2009

Bottom line it is a fun little piece that looks cool and people always comment on it. That was the bump to push it from 3 stars to 4. however, performance wise it is light, simple to use, small but really not that bright. It's like you need one more level to really make it useful. It is so close to being a very solid lantern but it needs to be a bit brighter. I still use it all the time and will definitely keep it. 3.5 - 4 stars

great choice. Not too warm-soft liner, not really for insulating but more for comfort. This is what I was looking for something light that I could use while winter hiking and snowshoeing. inside of the ankles is real solid durable material which was great for the snowshoes. prevents snagging and tearing. stretchy fabric allowed great easy movement. I can't say enough about how comfy they are. solid choice for active pursuits

Marmot Sharp Point Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Sharp Point Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

Very nice jacket. I went with the L originally but later swapped it for the M. I am 5'8" 190ish and the L fir well but the sleeves were long and there was plenty enough room to layer. Problem is I wanted this to be the layer so I went to the M. fit me perfect. Very warm jacket and handles water very well. Best windproof jacket I have had. pitzips are money as well.

this jacket was much warmer than I anticipated which is great because I do not have to wear as many layers. however, I have now added the Arc'teryx Gamma MX to the lineup cause it is thinner and not as warm. I use it in the fall/spring in warmer temps or for more aerobic activities. The Sharp Point is a solid choice for winter. I use it by itself mostly-I think I have put a shell on once.

The North Face Goliath 3D Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Climashield HL

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

I was originally drawn to this bag cause of it's green color. I wasn't the bright orange, blue, red, yellow etc that a lot of the bags are. I use this bag for overnight backpacking or weekend backpacking in all conditions and it works well. On longer trips I take my down bag cause it is smaller. this does pack pretty small and comes with a good stuff/compression sack. I have used it in 0 degrees and it did pretty well. I would say 15-20 is really where you need to be to be completely comfy though. I have used it in the snow quite a bit and it insulates well even when it gets wet. Oh, and it's huge so you sleep a bit more comfy

I think you would be good. No matter what backpack you use it will have a lot of stuff for a weekend. This one is a good choice because it is narrow which allows for an easy full range of movement. I load mine with 40 pounds all the time and I think it handles it well. It does not have the support of a higher end pack and I would not really recommend it for a long hike but a dirt bike I think you will like it. Lots of features.

copper vs. emerald mt? I see there is a similar question already on here but I am curious why the merald mtn. is listed under big agnes' superlight category and the copper is in the ultralight? The copper 3 is about a full pound lighter. Maybe I don't know the diff between ultralight and superlight. some reviewers are saying lighter materials but both are made from silicone treated nylon ripstop w/1200mm waterproof poly coating and both use the same DAC TH72M poles. I do like the taller sides of the copper not sure that's enough to sway me to spend another $100.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 9, 2009

I went with the Gamma MX after much thought and testing. I have a couple others that were just too warm and did not breath well. I rarely wore them cause I would get too hot with any physical activity. That is why I like this one. Thin, stretchy, moves well, not too warm, breaths well, and does a good job blocking wind. I usually wear a light base layer (short or long sleeve depending on the activity and the conditions) and in real cold temps I go for a light tee and a mid long sleeve base layer, usually merino wool. This combo has proven perfect for snowshoeing in 10 degree weather with wind. I also use it for running in winter and just kicking around town. The other jackets that were comparable were just too thin and focused too much on running or aerobic type stuff. The MX is great as an all around - multipurpose jacket. Worth the money. Ignore the "made in China" talk...

Brunton MY-Ti Spork

July 9, 2009

I have used it with my jetboil a bunch keeping in mind that I could scratch the pan. So I never really scrape hard or enough to scratch the surface. It will for sure scratch teflon or coated cookware. The teeth are sharp and metal. check out this one from MSR it is plastic and folds up MSR Spork Item #CAS0548

Brunton MY-Ti Spork

Love this thing. You can often find one stashed in my backpack in the event a barbecue breaks out and of course it has a permanent place in my backpack when camping or hiking. Very strong, light and sharp teeth. Highly recommend.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

July 9, 2009

Like Mark L above, I think the Backcountry.com Shift Welder Item #BCC0146 is a good choice. I have worn it a bunch and it is definitely longer than the Gamma MX. Similar fit everywhere else but just longer.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

July 9, 2009

I have beat my "made in China" gamma mx pretty bad and it is solid-no signs of damage or major wear. I wouldn't think twice about buying arc gear. I have a bunch and all seems to be built with very high standards. Plus, you have a good manufacturer warranty and of course BCs killer guarantee.

Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon

Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

I replaced the Jetboil telescopic spoon with this one because I hated cleaning the jetboil utensils-lots of grooves and stuff to clean. This spoon works great to reach in the jetboil cup. The edges are also curved good to fit the contours of most cups and pots. Very light and fits anywhere.

Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon

July 8, 2009

for a coated, teflon (not sure if they still use teflon) type pan or pot I think it will definitely scratch. It is a metal spoon and most of those types of cookware say do not use metal. I use it with the jetboil pot and pan and it works real well. I have not scratched them but for jobs where I do a lot of scraping I use a spatula.

Jetboil Pot Support and Stability Kit

Jetboil Pot Support and Stability Kit

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

As the title to this review says, if you have the pot you need this piece. It folds nice and can be stored in both the cup or the pot easily. Light and strong. The only gripe I have is when everything is set up the pot and support is slippery and loose fitting. I still give it 5 stars because I do not know how else to do it.

Jetboil Cargo Cozy Kit

July 8, 2009

I have the spoon, fork, spatula and the hanging thing all on the cargo cozy. It stretches a bunch and the stitching is solid. Been using it this way for a while. I agree though with the Ian from the above review. There really is not a need to carry all of these if you are backpacking. I almost always have the spatula and a long handled spoon this one-Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon Item #BCC0132. When I store it or am car camping I bring the full arsenal in the cozy.

Jetboil Spoon

Jetboil Spoon

Rating for this product: 3 July 8, 2009

I have this and the fork but now prefer the Backcountry.com Long Handled Spoon Item #BCC0132. The jetboil utensils are great, light, compact nice, fit in the cup or on the cozy nice but cleaning them kind of sucks. there are a lot of little grooves where they slide that are tough to clean. They also get a little soft when they heat up. I think there are better options out there like the BC long handle spoon

Great Addition to the Cup and PCS

Jetboil 1.5 Liter Cooking Pot

Jetboil 1.5 Liter Cooking Pot

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

I have cooked everything in this. fish, burritos, popcorn, frozen pizza, many a freeze dried meal, and countless other meals all with success. Very light and the surface is easy to clean and pretty non-stick even for eggs. I use it with the Jetboil PCS and the support/stability kit. I use it as both a pot for liquid and prefer it over the fry pan for most frying because of the taller sides.

Jetboil Spatula

Jetboil Spatula

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

so glad when this came out. the curved edge of this spatula fit the curve of the pot and pan perfect. I was using a squared edge and it was driving me crazy. Makes cleaning the cookware easier too cause you can scrape all of the edge perfectly. light and compacts small-fits into the jetboil neoprene cozy nicely

Jetboil 1 Liter Companion Cup

Jetboil 1 Liter Companion Cup

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

did a trip in the winter with just one cup and instantly realized a second one would make my life tons easier. Why? I now have two and use one for melting snow exclusively and the other to cook in. When snowshoeing I usually do not stop for a long time to clean the cup after eating real well. just enough to not be too gross later. When I would use it to melt snow for drinking it would always have the taste of the last meal. Now I don't worry about that and I melt snow while I am eating out of the other one which saves me a ton of time. plus you can pack more stuff in the empty cup. very light I don't even notice that I have an extra one

MSR Lightning Ascent

MSR Lightning Ascent

Rating for this product: 4 July 8, 2009

do everything they say they will do very well-traction, climb, lightweight, simple bindings etc. The one thing I do not like is the 2 foot straps on the bindings. I found to make them tight I needed to cinch the one close to the ankle down tight which flattened my arch out and eventually killed my foot after an hour of hiking. Sold these and got the new 3 strap ones. Big diff. Love them!

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

July 8, 2009

My brother uses these for the same thing. He has the 25" and is 5'10" about 180. With all his board gear the 25" do great. He packs them down on a Dakine Poacher pack. The televator heel lifter on the Lightning Ascents works very well for this. These are lighter than the Evo's especially since you may want to add the tails to the Evos.

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

lightweight, unparalleled traction, simple binding system, tackle steep stuff easy, and extremely durable. Been using these for several years now. Had the 2 strap binding version before and switched to this one in '08. Love them! The 3 strap bindings are great because I can get a real custom fit and not strap my foot down o hard it flattens my arch. The bindings don't really hold any snow either which is a plus. I am 185lb and usually have a 30lb pack on-I have tried all three sizes and went with the 25". Mostly wear them in the Utah backcountry powder. 30" was better flotation obviously but wasn't worth the extra length on the tail.

Rating for this product: 4 July 8, 2009

I get lots of compliments when I wear this shirt. It is way soft and holds it's shape well-unlike other organic cotton shirts I have. I was a bit concerned cause when I tried it on it was longer than I liked. I am 5'8" 185-190LB and the Medium is longer than most my other shirts. It did not shrink that much when I washed it. Still a great shirt. Really like the Cargo Green color.

DAKINE Guide Backpack - 3000cu in

July 7, 2009

I am 5'7" and the pack fit me pretty good. There are not a lot of adjustments on this pack so someone 5'5" or less I think may find this pack a bit large. I am on the border. I would look at the Osprey Switch Series or the Black Diamond snow packs for a better fit. The Poacher is also the same as this one but should fit a bit smaller.

Vasque Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Vasque Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 7, 2009

I have the 9.5 in black. the fit is pretty good. I usually wear a 9.5 in most brands. I maybe should have gone a half size smaller because the one piece leather did stretch quite a bit. Took a while to break in but now they feel like a tennis shoe. I have used these a lot. Climbed all over mountains and even snowshoed in them. I find that my feet have never hurt in these even after a long day. Really like the support and sturdy feeling these boots have. Oh, and the waterproofing has never let me down even after 2 years of abuse.

Montrail Flow Hiking Shoe - Men's

Montrail Flow Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 7, 2009

these are hands down my favorite pair of shoes I have owned. They are not the most comfortable I have ever owned but I feel like I can climb anything. Very tacky sole (by tacky I mean sticky/grippy), the covered toe is a great feature as well. Great style, I wear them everyday and I am going to buy another pair strictly for trail use. Good support from the footbed and sole-sturdy but not too stiff. They are like a sturdy cross trainer. At first the toe box felt too big but I am used to it now and tried a half size smaller but that was too uncomfortable. I wear a 9.5 in most brands and that is the size I went with in the Flow.

Arc'teryx Apache AR Zip - Men's

July 1, 2009

I am 5'8" 190 and I went with the large. It is long in the sleeves but fits well around the chest and is loose around the stomache. A medium fits me as well but is a bit too tight in the chest and arms. This is more relaxed fit than most of their other pieces. On their website it is listed as relaxed fit where as most the other fleece are listed as athletic. I would have a hard time seeing the length of the arms of a L fit you at 6'3". I would think an XL would be a better fit.

Arc'teryx Apache AR Zip - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 1, 2009

this is a solid fleece. it is light and very warm. It is definitely a 200 weight fleece and nothing less. Very soft inside. it is cut a bit shorter than I was expecting which means it will work great under my shell. I am 5'8" and the L comes just below my belt. A medium fits me but since I weigh about 190 (all muscle of course) I usually go with a L in arc'teryx gear. I think it is worth noting that this fleece is very solid construction wise. I have had some bad experiences with cheaper fleece in the past (columbia, TNF) and I think this is worth the extra money. I was also looking for a fleece that breathes real well, windproofing was not important and I think this one does the trick very well.

The North Face Ex-Girlfriend Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 1, 2009

at first glance they looked flat and stiff. I put them on and changed my impression. the foam and cork are very comfortable and mold to your feet pretty quick. seem to be built well and overall I really like the support they give. Totally surprised since they looked so flat when I opened them up. The negative and why they are not a 5 star-the canvas is kind of rough as well as the piece that goes between your toes. a bit like sand paper. definitely still love them but worth noting. I got the 10's and usually wear a 9.5 shoe. The fit is good. I think if I was a size 10 I may have went with an 11 in this. They fit me that close. I would recommend them.

Sanuk SUV Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 1, 2009

pretty stoked about these. I have been wearing them non stop for days. Sooo comfortable. The footbed is very soft and molds to your foot. They are very light and the traction is killer. I am glad I went with the SUV and not the other versions. I usually wear a 9.5 in most shoes and I went with the 10. Fits very good. The 9 would have definitely been too small. when I am in a rush I fold the back down and wear it like a slip-on-just a little added bonus. I was worried about sweaty feet but that hasn't really been an issue. My feet sweat the same as any sandal I was worried about sliding around when I got real sweaty but that's not the case. The one thing I will say that I was not a fan of at first was the sole sticks out around about half inch or so. I snagged it on stuff a bunch at first but that is just me being retarded. I am used to them now.
