Stomping Grounds:
Southern Appalachian Mountains -
Bio:
From my front porch, I can look beyond the shining rail lines and across the river and up to the big blue mountains sitting against the sky, like embodied truths, like perfect beings without fear or desire. This day they are just a scant shade darker than heaven...shorn and damaged and eternal.
~Charles Frazier

Ty Nelson's AT thru-hike / Cold Weather Weekend
Created December 19, 2009
This was my pack list for the Appalachian Trail, and I have since modified it slightly to serve as an all around cold weather backpack list, which has served me well in hikes in the smokies and Glacier NP, and everywhere in between. If you are planning to hike the AT, or do any long distance backpack, it is critical to keep your pack under 40 lbs, including food and water, and under 35 is even better. Many hopeful thru-hikers can't imagine doing without this or that gadget, and end up mailing half their gear home in the first two weeks. Here is what worked for me, but not necessarily the best for everyone. Hike your own hike, just be mindful of the weight. Notes: An AT thru-hike will take you through every season. This list concentrates on cold weather. See my warm weather list for summer gear. One thing that is not on this list that is absolutely critical is water purification. There are many methods, but the simplest and cheapest is to get a small dropper bottle and fill it with regular bleach. Add three drops of bleach to every liter of water and you will be good to go.

GoLite Pinnacle Pack - 3700cu in - Women's
January 12, 2010
The Pinnacle has a removable soft foam back pad. The Quest has a framesheet with aluminum stays. If you are carrying 30 lbs, I would recommend you get a pack that has the framesheet and stays. It is worth the extra pound in the pack, as it will carry the load better.

Stoic Merino Bliss 150 Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's
December 19, 2009
This is the quintessential layering piece. Whether you use it as a base layer, midlayer, outer layer, or the only layer depends entirely on conditions and activity. When backpacking, I wear it as an outer layer over an ultralight merino base. This arrangement is good down below freezing as long as you stay active. Warmer layers go on top once I reach camp. For higher speed activities (biking, skiing), I like to have an outer layer that blocks the wind. Check out the rime and shift softshells. With these outer layers, it is sometimes too warm to keep the midweight merino, so i wear the softshell over the ultralight merino. If it is cold enough, i will wear all three layers. They key to layering is to have many different combinations available. For me, more often than not, this shirt is in my layering equation. But to answer your question more directly, this shirt alone will probably not be warm enough by itself for 20F nordic skiing.

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's
December 19, 2009
Worry not. I am 6'3" 185lbs and have a large. The fit is good with plenty of length. At 6'4" you should be fine, your mid drift will not go uncovered.

Columbia Alpino II Reversible Down Vest - Men's
July 24, 2009
Per the sizing chart, I am right at the border between M and L. I went with the L and it fits well. Im sure the M would fit me also, but the L allows me to pack a few layers underneath. If you are at the low end of the M range, you might go with the S if you want it snug. Otherwise, if you want a few layers underneath, go with the M.

MSR WindPro Stove
June 5, 2009
Any stove that uses IsoPro (or any other canister butane/propane mix) will suffer a loss of performance in cold weather. The fuel becomes dense and is less easily vaporized. I have had my WindPro fail to light and stay lit in 15 degree weather. After that, on winter hikes, I started hiking the last few miles before setting up camp with the canister between my base layer and outer layers, and sleeping with it in my bag at night. I have never had a problem with it since.
