They are functional and can be adjusted to your leg size for the best fit.

They are water resistant but I wouldn't run through deep water in them. For snow and slush around town they will keep the water out but don't go fording any streams. These boots are so sexy you can get a big husky man to carry you across ;)

Osprey makes great packs and it should last you the two years and be a great bag for hiking once you get home. Make sure you wash your hands and bag straps often, the dirt from handling the straps will leave brown marks on your shirt no matter what bag you choose. The sole is waterproof but they rate the upper part as winter proof. So if you are walking in snow etc you will be fine but if you go through a deeper stream it won't keep all the water out.

You will lose about an inch in the arms sizing down to a large so if you have that much length to work with then I would go with the large. The roomy could come in handy if you need to layer up for those really cold days or for wearing it after Thanksgiving dinner.

An average sized duffle bag? I would recommend finding a measuring tape and seeing if 22 long by 11 high by 11 wide is the size you are looking for. Its an odd size to compare. Sorry I cant compare better.
