Great lamp

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 July 2, 2011

This little guy has been very helpful when our hikes go a little longer then expected. I haven't used the red light yet but the floods work really well. It truly lights up the night and has prevented some potentially hurt ankles. The double bright setting gives out plenty of useable light and broadcasts a wide fan. I'm glad I have this little wonder in my pack. Plus the case protects the lamp well. Overall th lamp gives out a lot of light and isn't very heavy. The battery life is good as well. Good lamp.

Tall Hat

Backcountry.com Emblem Trucker Hat

Backcountry.com Emblem Trucker Hat

Rating for this product: 3 June 27, 2011

I wanted an option to have a vented hat for summer hikes and thought this guy looked great. I like to sport the BC gear but was a little unimpressed. The color of the green version was what I expected (bright), but I was surprised how tall the front of the hat is. It either sticks up quite high or sits really low on my head, flattening my ears, depending on how I wear it. I decided to keep it for BC pride but might not wear it as much as I had hoped.

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Medium Crew Sock

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Medium Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 4 June 27, 2011

I used these on a hike this weekend in the spring snow of the northwest. They performed really well! We were sinking in a fair amount and snow was in my boots all day. My feet stayed much drier then my hiking partners who weren't wearing the same socks. Suckers. I was wicking moisture like a champ! They performed really well! I was very impressed with how comfortable my feet stayed even though they were slightly moist throughout the hike. There was just the right amount of padding and support for a quick half day hike as well. Thank you PhD!

Rating for this product: 5 February 12, 2011

These became my favorite shoes from day one. They are comfortable even when standing for long periods and they look great with jeans and shorts. They are perfect with one tiny concern. They do stretch a little as you wear them in but it isn't worth sizing down because these babies are for hanging loose man.

The North Face Flux Power Stretch 1/4-Zip Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2011

I bought this as an under layer for my Apex in the winter. However, I've been wearing it all spring and loving it! It's warm but moves excess heat away from my body like a champ and that's something coming from a guy who can get hot fast! It has a very soft inner lining and the abrasion resistant exterior stands up to the test. I have run into bushes and doors and there is not one pulled thread! This is a must for cool days and excellent under a soft shell for the very cold mornings and winter days.

The North Face Crescent Sunshine Hooded Sweatshirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 January 22, 2011

I bought this for my wife. She has a slender build and it fits well with a t-shirt underneath. It has a good feminine cut and is warm without being too bulky. She enjoys the soft inner lining and the Bordeaux color is a nice soft cranberry red. The buttons are mainly for looks with a zipper closure on the neck line and the pocket in front is a kangaroo pocket but looks like two separate openings. Overall a great hangout sweater.

Perfect for narrow feet!

Vasque Wasatch GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Vasque Wasatch GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 22, 2011

I have narrow feet and I have to lace boots up very tight so I've had problems in the past with blisters because of friction with the heal lift in many boots. (Thank goodness for Moleskin) These boots have a more straight vertical heal lift without that normal bump curve. Combine that with a more restricting lace pattern and these feel like walking on clouds!! I have yet to have problems while taking these babies on hikes ranging from a mile to a long fourteen mile day hike to Hunt Peak in Washington state. These are wonderful! Plus, the traction is right on par with any other mid range hiking boot and the Vibram sole has been very sturdy. I strongly recommend these boots to anyone with narrow feet!

Mexican Hero

Marmot Minimalist Jacket - Men's

Marmot Minimalist Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2011

My wife and I were "lucky" enough to go to Mexico for our honeymoon... in the rainy season! The first night we were there three inches of standing rain greeted us. This jacket was my hero on our walk to the store in a torrential downpour that night. My shoes and shorts were soaked but my upper body was completely dry!! It performed well the rest of the week and made a potentially bad situation into a lot of fun with many rainy walks on the beach with my lovely wife as the ocean kissed our feet. I never experienced any wetness and the under arm vents worked like champs! I'm so glad I sprung for the Gore-Tex! I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a completely waterproof jacket for everyday and technical use. Thank you Marmot and Gore-Tex!

Good in cool but not cold

The North Face Apex Glove - Men's

The North Face Apex Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2011

I bought these gloves to use while hiking. Their soft shell exterior and grip hands work well for that purpose. However, they are not as comfortable in cold weather. Even with a liner they are not good if the temp drops below freezing. So they aren't good for an "around town" glove in the winter but work very well while hiking and using trekking poles in the fall and spring.

Amazing!

Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest Hammock

Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest Hammock

Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2010

I love this hammock! I've only used it car camping so far but it has performed wonderfully! I was really surprised by how sturdy the construction is. It looks flimsy but once you sit/lay in it you'll completely change your mind if you are hesitant like I was. The nylon is very strong and held my 275lb friend without flinching. Like I said, I am very impressed. The hammock is incredibly easy to hang as long as you have two trees or poles relatively close together. The slap straps are really adjustable and simple to use. Plus, the hammock sizes down so well into it's stuff sack and it is very light for how much it can support. You should buy this! I promise you'll love it!

Marmot Twilight 2-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft

Marmot Twilight 2-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft

Rating for this product: 5 June 20, 2010

This is a great tent! I have taken it camping a couple times and have fallen for it. It is very easy to construct with one person (it takes me about 5-7 minutes). I was warm and had plenty of room with my hiking buddy in there too. He is 6'2" 180 and I am 5'11" 160. We were both comfortable and the good sized vestibule space helped save room inside. The viewing window helps to check our surroundings and weather. The construction seems sturdy and I'm sure I will have this tent for many years to come!

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 7, 2010

I bought two merino crew shirts and SAC and thought I had found my dream merino shirt. However, there were two big problems. The fit is weird and the shirts seemed to shift to the side like they were cut that way. I couldn't get one of the two to face forward at all. Second, the fabric is extremely thin. After a handful of washes holes developed in the fabric. Both were swiftly returned!

Rating for this product: 5 December 13, 2009

As light weight fleeces go this one is very nice. It wears well and provides good warmth on slightly cool days and layers nicely on cold days and nights under my TNF softshell. A waist cinch cord might be a nice addition and it isn't the most compressible fleece out there.

SmartWool NTS Midweight 1/4-Zip Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 2, 2009

I haven't sweated it up on a backcountry hike yet in this shirt, but it has proved itself in the cold weather around town. It's a great layering piece under my jackets and has proved to be quite warm. Plus it fits so well (5'11", 165 - size M) I often forget it's even there. The sleeve length is perfect and doesn't stick out of my long sleeve shirts. This has begun to prove itself to be my "go to" base layer in the winter. Pretty good for my first Smart Wool piece!

Garmin eTrex Legend H

Garmin eTrex Legend H

Rating for this product: 3 June 23, 2009

I'll be honest. I got this as a gift. I was expecting a different brand/model. This unit gets the job done but isn't very powerful. The controls are mainly built for left handed use which can be helpful for right handed people like myself to keep my dominent hand free, however, working the functions can get a little annoying and slow because of it. My hiking buddy has a Magellan and to put it simply... I am very jealous.

Rating for this product: 5 June 13, 2009

This jacket lives up to the BC.com name. Well built and completely comfortable. I've been wearing it ever since I snagged it on SAC. Two little complaints: The pits ride a little tight but not annoyingly so and the neck is a bit high for everyday use but is nice in cold weather. This is my new favorite jacket. Maybe not worth the full price but at a discount I would recommend it to anyone!

The North Face XTC Midweight 1/4 Zip Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 30, 2009

The Midweight is proving itself to be quite a good baselayer. It doesn't feel too bulky or too heavy and I like how it moves with my body while my pack is on. The sizing feels a little loose in my arms. I'm 5'11" 170 lbs and the medium is great in the body but just a touch loose through the arms. I guess I just need to bulk up a bit! ;) Overall the Midweight has worked well for me so far.

Great Midweight Jacket

The North Face Pluto Hill Zip Mock Pullover - Men's

The North Face Pluto Hill Zip Mock Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 2, 2009

I wasn't sure how "midweight" this jacket was going to be. I had tried one on at The North Face store in Boise a while back but couldn't remember quite how it felt. Now that I finally have one, I love it! It is a perfect layering piece for cold Pacific Northwest hikes (under my NF Bionic jacket) or great on it's own on a warmer day. The monkey thumb holes fit well and provide good warmth for my hands. A cinch cord at the waist might be helpful but I haven't had a need for it yet. The DWR coating is very helpful on misty mornings also. This is good one. I strongly recommend it.

The North Face Apex Zip Shirt Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 18, 2009

Good light jacket. I wear in running and stay comfortably warm. It allows a full range of movements. Works well as a layering piece under my Apex Bionic jacket. It is not an insulated base layer like I originally thought but works very well as a wind stop while running. The side hip pocket hold keys or my iPod well. However there is no headphone hole into the inside of the jacket which would be a nice feature. Overall a good light jacket.
