Head Skis USA Monster Ski Bag

February 22, 2009

I was just down at the shop and asked about this bag. They said it really only holds two pairs of skis and looking inside, there are only two slots with the velco straps to hold ski's. There are two other "compartments" that are simply seperated by a small wall of padding, so I guess you could put ski's in there too. This is in Japan where they tend to err on the side of caution so even though the tag says it holds 4 pairs of ski's they claim it's a 2 pair bag. Width/depth is fine and lots of pockets, the three quick-release compression straps would probably also keep additional ski's in place fine if you opted to try and fit four pairs in it.As far as whether or not it will hold your 189's, I had just bought a pair of Mantra 184's and put 'em in the bag to test it out. It was OK for my 184's and I think your 189's would fit fine too.

Great fit for my feet!

Nordica Speedmachine 14 Ski Boot - Men's

Nordica Speedmachine 14 Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2009

I've used these boots for about half the season now and I have no major complaints. They are MUCH better than my old boots because they actually fit my narrow feet! The width is perfect if you have narrow feet. It probably helps that this is only the 2nd ski boot I have ever owned and I did some research regarding proper boot fit this time. I also got the Inuition heat-moldable liners and custom foot-beds which really helps. They don't seem that stiff too me which I actually prefer, but again, I don't have much experience with other boots. I also mostly ski in 'soft' mode rather than 'hard' mode, which makes a difference. I got a fantastic deal which made it even that much better.

Fantastic shell

Mountain Hardwear Exposure II Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Exposure II Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 4, 2009

Love the shell. Very wind resistant, I've been blasted with some major gusts of wind and they did not penetrate the shell at all. I do not find the underarm zips to be bulky as other owners have complained. I am 6'4", 200 lbs. and I usually have problems with sleeve and/or body length. The large fits me well. I wouldn't go with an XL unless you are really big. I bought this as a ski jacket and have only used it for that. So for mostly on-piste, but it seems pretty sturdy so I expect it to hold up for off-piste jaunts. Remember, this is a SHELL. It does not provide warmth, you need base and mid layers for that.

OK I guess

Mountain Hardwear Microchill Fleece Zip Tee - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Microchill Fleece Zip Tee - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 4, 2009

At first I thought it was a fine fleece and I still think it's OK I guess. Things that annoy me: not as warm as I thought and it's a pain to take on and off. It seems to statically stick to everything I wear under it. Since I bike to work, this is what I wear when I go out of the office for lunch and it's a pain to take on/off with a long-sleeved dress shirt. It's even a bit hard with my thin wool base-layer. I can hear the stitching stretching and tearing now and then when I struggle to get it off. It needs to be either a full zip or different material on the inside sleeves to make it easier to get on and off. I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 if there were half star ratings, but I give it a 2 since there's not and too many people have given it 5 stars. Need a reality check here for the price. :-)

Good base layer

The North Face XTC Lightweight Crew - Men's

The North Face XTC Lightweight Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 4, 2009

I haven't used it much yet, but it seems OK for the job. One of the reasons I haven't used it that much is that it turned out to be a bit short for me. I am 6'4" and based on research, I bought the large. If you're tall like me, you definitely want to go with the XL (I normally would, but thought this one would be longer). I push up the sleeves and for the cold climbing gym I got to, it's a nice base-layer. It doesn't seem super warm however, compared to my wool base-layer, but it gets the job done.

Fantastic ski pants

The North Face Freedom Insulated Pant - Men's

The North Face Freedom Insulated Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2009

Warm and comfortable. I'm 6'4", 200 lbs. and went with the XL. The length is great but a little loose in the waist, which I prefer. You've got the elastic straps and loops for a belt if you need it so no problems there. The pockets are great, plenty of space to put your stuff. I ordered all new ski wear this season and this is one of the items I'm most pleased with.

Great shell, liner could be better

Outdoor Research Arete Glove - Men's

Outdoor Research Arete Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 4, 2009

The shell is great, comes up fairly high on the wrist. As others have mentioned, for cold, cold weather though, you want to get a better liner. Most of the time they are fine, but on cold days and/or night skiing when the temps drop, these will not hold up. Decent for the price I suppose.

Nice base-layer.

SmartWool Microweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

SmartWool Microweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 31, 2008

Great base-layer, I use it for cycling and skiing. I'm 6'4", 195 lbs., with especially long arms, but the Large fit fine. It's just a tad short in the arms (but longer than I expected) and nice and long through the mid-sections so it tucks in nicely. As others have posted, it doesn't get stanky at all. I've worn it 15-20 times now, have yet to wash it, and I can't smell a thing, nothing. Zipper is nice too. I only have a couple of minor complaints. 1) occasionally it feels slightly itchy, usually when I stop doing whatever I'm doing. I'm sensitive to other wool products, but this is not that bad at all. Once you generate a little perspiration, it seems to go away. 2) for a "mid-weight" layer, I thought it would be a bit thicker/warmer. These are minor complaints though as it's not that itchy and it is warm enough as a base-layer. Just make sure you have a nice warm mid-layer for skiing on those really cold days. These two minor complaints kept me from giving it 5 stars, but all in all, highly recommended.

The North Face Freedom Insulated Pant - Men's

I normally wear a 38 waist pant, so I'm right at the high end of a Large. Should I go for the Large or the X-Large?

Mountain Hardwear Exposure II Parka - Men's

November 14, 2008

According to one poster's comment, the sizes run quite large. He stated he was 6'5, 200 lbs., which is almost identical to my height/weight. He said he wished he'd bought a Large instead of the X-Large. I can't imagine buying a Large as I always buy X-Large/Tall whenever possible (admittedly, I'm not as wide as I am tall and sometimes XLT is a little bulky). What size do you recommend?
