After much studying, I bought this whirlibird XL. I wanted mostly black to match my N.F. pants, but wanted a bit of color too. Yes, be aware that the black has a narrow piece of dark brown between the black & white. It blends into the black & is barely noticable. I was looking @ them on Lowcountry.com. They have this "chat" where you can ask questions like, "what color is that on.. is it all black?" & they will tell you exactly what colors there are on the jackets. Too bad they did not have one in an XL, so I found it on amazon.com. It arrived in good shape in 5 days, even though they say up to 10 days for free ground. The inner lining or shell is zipped in & detachable, but is white nylon. It keeps me very warm but I would not where it by it's self. ( my preference!) Outer jacket is much softer than some, zippers every where, almost covers my rear, snow skirt, zip pits, detachable hood, but not zippered, but snap ons, but works for me. Two outer pockets & to my surprise, 3 inner packets on the outer shell. I bought it to ski in mountains of NC, Sugar, Beech, etc, good for around freezing, so far so good. There were no surprises & I am very happy with it.
The color changes from black to brown & then to white curving in slightly @ the waist, hence quite slimming I think. I bought a columbia Benton fleece but it does not zip in ( the "teeth" don't match up) but I still wore my fleece underneath with great results.. sooo warm. I don't know about below freezing temps because it hasn't happened yet... I hope this helps! Michele W

Many people have written about how disappointed they are because they thought it was a 3 in 1 jacket. This jacket says it is a "shell" on the "Bottom Line" @ the end. what I like about the shell is that one can buy what ever color liner or fleece you want to zip into it or to wear with it. With the 3 in 1 jackets, you have to take what ever color they decide should go under the shell. I hope this helps someone out there!

IF anyone is looking for black ( not shown in Back Country.com) I found one @ campmor.com IT has a hint of white, just like the navy blue one shown here, but this won't go with my black pants. They also have XL price right now is $219. Good deal!

I wish you made this black with some white in an XL. I have black pants & this jacket would have been perfect!

Hey, I really like this 3-1 jacket but the colors.. wish the black has a little white, or the other jackets have a bit of black. I have all black pants so I wanted my jacket to blend a little.. oh well..

Again, just when I found a black white combo. there is no xtra large.. bummer.
