MontBell Ultralight Down Inner Parka - Men's

February 24, 2010

This jacket is cut pretty slim, as its meant to be a layer itself; though it makes a great jacket on its own... I can't tell you what size to get, but if you plan on layering up like that and you don't want the MontBell to become too tight, you might want to size up. Also, the MontBell Alpine Light Parka is a slightly heavier jacket and is cut fuller, but still weighs next to nothing.

MSR Denali Classic Snowshoe

February 24, 2010

It really depends on what kind of pants you plan on wearing and where you are going. All snowshoes are going to throw snow up at the back of your legs. If you wear ski pants then no, you don't need gaiters. Most already have them built in, plus they are water resistant. If you are not wearing ski pants, they would be a good idea, especially if you plan on trekking through some deep snow or fluffy pow.

Sporty dog jacket

Ruffwear Cloud Chaser Dog Softshell Jacket

Ruffwear Cloud Chaser Dog Softshell Jacket

Rating for this product: 4 February 23, 2010

Got this in a large for my 80lb Weimaraner. It fits him snug around the chest and is a little loose in the arms. I have read a few complaints that this jacket chafes around the arms, so I was happy to have the extra room there. This is a pretty lightweight jacket, but where it lacks in insulation, it makes up for as a moisture barrier. It seems very well made and I expect it to last a while. It doesn't get dirty easily, either (but dog hair does stick well to the fleece lining). Used it on a 9 mile hike this weekend and he kept warm while moving and experienced no chafing. He did seem a bit cold laying around camp at night, though. The only thing I would change is that although this is a softshell, it would be nice with a bit more insulation.

Dog socks? Not as stupid as I thought...

Ruffwear Bark'n Boot Liners - Set of 4

Ruffwear Bark'n Boot Liners - Set of 4

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2010

Bought the Bark n Boots for a 9 mile hike this weekend in the Uintas. The 80lb weimaraner can never last more than a few minutes in the snow before his feet get too cold and then he just sits there watching us trek on... The boots fit great and I never had any problems with them falling off, but as we hiked on, they started filling up with snow. Eventually, he just stopped and sat there like before.

I bought the liners just in case. I thought they were semi-ridiculous but they actually ended up saving the day! The snow was creeping into the shoes and making his feet cold, so he would just sit there as before. I gave the socks a try and we had no problems from there on. The socks kept the snow out of the shoes and his feet dry.

Saved my pup from bloody snow paws

Ruffwear Bark'n Boots Grip Trex - Set of 4

Ruffwear Bark'n Boots Grip Trex - Set of 4

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2010

Took the dogs on a 9 mile hike this weekend in the Uintas. The 80lb weimaraner can never last more than a few minutes in the snow before his feet get too cold and then he just sits there watching us trek on... Besides the cold, the snow can be abrasive on his pads, causing them to bleed. I ended up getting a size medium after measuring his pads as instructed on the Ruffwear site. They were a perfect fit. I never had any problems with them coming off or being at all loose. It didn't take very long for him to get used to them, either. Tested them a few times at home before the trip, so he knew what he was getting into. He'd walk like a turtle for about a minute before he figured it out.

I also decided to pick up the liners/socks just in case. I thought they were semi-ridiculous but they actually ended up saving the day! The snow was creeping into the shoes and making his feet cold, so he would just sit there as before. I gave the socks a try and we had no problems from there on. The socks kept the snow out of the shoes and his feet dry. I imagine in the summer we will just use the shoes -sans socks.

The North Face Libra Cargo Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 29, 2009

These pants are really comfortable AND flattering! Tough enough for play, but nice enough for a casual office. I found them to be true to size, I'm a 6 and that's what fit me here. They also haven't stretched out at all which is a plus. Best of all, they are long! I haven't measured them, but I'd say the inseam on my longs is about 34".... I don't think that the size chart is quite accurate.

Stohlquist Brik Personal Flotation Device

June 29, 2009

Their padding is the same thickness, but the brik does not come up as high on the chest as the wedge does, giving it a slightly lower profile. Both only have one small-ish pocket which can only hold low-profile items, as the mesh is stretched tight against the pfd (see comment below). Comfort level would best be determined by yourself, as these jackets are very similar. I have the wedge, which I love. Boyfriend has the brik, but only because they were out of the wedge in his size. He loves his brik now and says he would be happy with either jacket.

Lafuma RSX XL Camp Chair

Lafuma RSX XL Camp Chair

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2009

Chair is super comfortable. The mesh material allows you to stay cool in the summer heat. Great for reading or sunbathing on the patio in the late afternoons... not to mention napping! Pillow is adjustable and removable, which makes cleaning easy (although this thing doesn't really get dirty easily!). I've had it for over a year and have no problems with it. I keep it inside in the winter and under an awning, out of the elements in the summer. This isn't made to sit out all summer/year. Take care of it and it will take care of you! Also, I recommend the soft foam armrests over the wood ones. They are much more comfortable.

Don't get TOO active in this...

Patagonia Solid Makeba Bikini Top - Women's

Patagonia Solid Makeba Bikini Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 June 19, 2009

This top looks great on and is good for mild to moderate activity. Anything strenuous though, and you may be putting on a show. Because the same straps that adjust the shoulders also adjust the back, its really hard to get secure fit without making it uncomfortably tight. Good for kayaking, not quite for volleyball (though this may all vary depending on the size of your chest, ie, the smaller the better...). Fabric is sturdy and seems like it will wear well. If you are looking for a more comfortable option to replace your halter-style tops, go for it. If you need something athletic, skip it and get a racerback.

Stohlquist Wedge-e Personal Flotation Device

June 18, 2009

The Brik has an extra strap that goes across the front and diagonally down the sides for added fit adjustments. It also sits lower on the body than the Wedge. The Wedge comes up much higher on the chest and back, which helps hold in "the twins". I find this to be much more comfortable than the Brik, which ends in the middle of my chest, squeezing me in all sorts of directions (picture someone wearing a corset that is too small on them). I've never tried the BeaSea, so I can't compare these to it, but these two are specifically whitewater jackets, while the Bea is not. All that said, I'm a size 6 (with a medium-sized chest) and wear a Medium in the Wedge and love it. I recommend it!

If you take another look at the sizing chart, in the very top row it shows the corresponding letter sizes. According to that, a 14 would be a L. The reason these pants' sizes are different is because these are actually children's pants, but because you are petite, these may still work for you!

Marmot Pinnacle Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down - Women's

June 15, 2009

Down:
•offers more warmth per weight, meaning a down 15° bag will weight less than a synthetic 15° bag
•less bulky, can be packed down to a smaller size
•cost more
•last much longer
•some people are allergic
•pain in the ass to clean properly

Synthetic:
•bags dry faster, making them a better choice for wet climates
•will eventually "deflate", the insulation gets matted down with use, affecting its ability to insulate properly
•cost less
•pretty easy to clean

I'm sure I've forgotten some points, but hopefully this can help you make your decision!

Sorel 1964 Pac T Boot - Men's

June 2, 2009

PowPow- Both boots are rated to -40°. The Caribus weigh slightly more than the Pacs. The Caribu also has a deeper tread on its sole, making it slightly better for off-road hikes and icy areas. . The tread on the Pacs doesn't grip as well. The Caribus' upper is a nubuck leather while these are embossed leather. I believe nubuck leather is tougher. Here is the difference between the two liners:

"ThermoPlus® InnerBoots: Pioneered by Sorel in 1993 after extensive field testing. ThermoPlus® InnerBoots provide superb warmth, moisture transfer, comfort, and durability. An advanced four-layer construction wicks perspiration from the foot, maximizes thermal insulation, and reflects body heat back to the foot for a warm, dry foot "climate".

1. Soft, short loop polyester Minktex® (green inner layer) maximizes contact to quickly wick perspiration from the foot.
2. Black polypropylene core insulates and facilitates wicking process.
3. Radiantex® foil reflects body heat back to the foot.
4. Polyester/viscose blend (camel outerlayer) insulates and stores moisture away from the foot.

Washable/Recycled InnerBoots: Pre-consumer recycled polyester. Ideal for children's boots where InnerBoots are exposed to excessive dirt and perspiration. A unique two-layer construction wicks moisture from feet and provides excellent insulation."

NRS Hydroskin Rash Guard - Short-Sleeve - Women's

NRS Hydroskin Rash Guard - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 19, 2009

I think that the description here may be misleading to some people, this rash guard is really 0.5-mm neoprene with a cozy, soft lining. But they are right, it is not bulky at all. I wear it under my semi-dry top in colder weather and sometimes on its own when it warms up. The lycra underarms make this thing super comfortable and allow full motion. I have found that NRS tops are much longer than traditional rashguards, which is fantastic. This one hits a few inches below my bellybutton, leaving no gap between my shorts.

The North Face Nuptse Bootie II - Men's

The North Face Nuptse Bootie II - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 19, 2009

I love these boots! They are great for just pulling on to walk the dogs or wearing to work so my nice shoes don't get destroyed. No laces to deal with makes them fast! They are not waterproof, but I have walked through small puddles and shoveled the driveway with no problems at all. The best part is that they are not stiff or clunky like most snow boots. Everyone is jealous of my booties!

Ruffwear Palisades Pack II

May 19, 2009

Our weimaraner is around 87 pounds, 32.5" in girth and 29" in length. He has this in a medium and it is perfect. There is also enough extra webbing on the straps that I would think a medium would work for Hank as well. When I looked at the large in the store, it looked huge. Our guy loves wearing it on hikes!

Sorel 1964 Pac Boot - Women's

May 19, 2009

Adela- The Caribu's weight about 5 ounces more than the Pac's. The Caribu also has a deeper tread on its sole, making it slightly better for off-road hikes. The Pac's don't grip as well in icy areas either.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Wallaby II

May 19, 2009

Tree frog is a solid light green (see top, far right image) and tree frog burst is dark gray with a green pattern (top, far left image). The images in the bottom row that are labeled "tree frog burst" are actually "tree frog stripe". It is incorrect, and Backcountry does not carry that color (stripe) anymore

Sorel 1964 Pac Boot - Women's

They are rated to -40°F/C. They are super comfortable and waterproof, but they are heavy to a lot of people, so while you can definitely use them for snowshoeing, you may get worked much quicker than you'd like.

Therm-a-Rest Prolite Plus Sleeping Pad

May 12, 2009

The plus is .5" thicker, weighs a bit more and is considered a four-season pad, while the prolite is a three-season pad. I use a 20" pad and it's wide enough for my average frame. It depends on how much weight you want to carry. If you think you roll around a lot, you may want a wider pad, but its not really necessary. I'd say go for the regular size.

Arc'teryx Tau AR Pullover - Women's

Arc'teryx Tau AR Pullover - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

Very cozy pullover. True to size, but as with most Arc'teryx women's stuff, its a little on the short side. If you have a long torso, I wouldn't recommend it (sleeves are not too short though). That said, this top is super comfortable and appears to be pretty durable. I even spilled some water on the sleeve and it beaded right off of the wind resistant outer! Great for layering

Chaco Z/2 Unaweep Sandal - Women's

May 11, 2009

Men's sandals are wider. If you have a wide foot, you should be fine. If your foot is narrow, or average for a woman, then it may slide around more, which could lead to blisters.

DAKINE Groomer Kit

May 6, 2009

I would talk to Dakine themselves (dakine.com) and see if they have any pieces left. If not, find out the color name from them. If its not too old, some retailers may still have some in stock. If that doesn't work, I'd try ebay.

Thule Hullavator is by far the easiest. Its also muy expensivo. A cheaper option would be to get the outrigger to help hoist up the boat, then get 2 Thule hull-a-ports, or Yakima HullRaisers, which provide 4 contact points (each) for extra boat security. Check out http://yakima.com/Consumer/Step1.aspx and http://www.thuleracks.com/carrier_water1.asp to custom outfit your vehicle.
