Mammut Ambler Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

Mammut Ambler Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 17, 2012

Ok, so I hunted around for a few jackets before snagging this. I looked at the Patagonia Fitz Roy, the Rab Neutrino Plus, and this one. This jacket is packed with down. It’s seriously baffled and is incredibly warm. Unfortunately its been pretty warm up here in the Northeast but I have used it down to about 5 or 10 with minimal layering underneath it, and it is totally sufficient. I also bought this jacket to keep me warm bouldering during the winter. It’s like a sleeping bag out there, great stuff in the 20s with a T shirt or thin layers underneath. Yes this sounds overkill, but I get really cold and like to stay super warm while I recover.

The downside is that the lighter of the 2 materials used does leak feathers. It’s not horrendous like some jackets I have seen, but it does leak through the fabric. The more durable fabric used on the sleeves and seat is burly and will hold up to some serious abuse. The zipper is a bit annoying too, not a huge deal but something to get used to for sure. The seams don’t seem to leak all that bad. Overall I have been pleased. I needed something really heavy to use for mid-winter climbing as a belay/inactive stay warm jacket, as I do have a light weight down jacket. It’s perfect for the really cold days and, as I mentioned, super warm.

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

October 31, 2011

Any recommendations on this vs. a Rab Endurance Neutrino? I like the box wall contraction on these, but it looks like the neutrino has more fill and higher quality down. Not sure what the Rab's "sewn through baffling" is, perhaps just a simple sewn through design. Anyhow, does anyone have any advice here? Is the box wall enough to beat out the higher quality over stuffing on the neutrino?

Great if it fits you

MontBell Thermawrap BC Insulation Jacket - Men's

MontBell Thermawrap BC Insulation Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 22, 2010

I own two other montbell jackets, the UL and the Alpine down. Both are great jackets. I figured this would be a nice addition for more active approaches, sweat, water, etc.
This product is well designed, but does not fit me at all. I am 6'2" 165 lbs, typical climber build. I ordered a large and there was way too much room in the body. Chest and arms were great, but enough bulk in the front to cover a pregnant woman... sent it back for a medium. Medium has good dimensions in the mid section, chest and shoulders is way too cramped. Fit well with a T shirt under but any other layers restricted motion. The forearm area in particular was super tight.
I am constantly plagued by fit issues with gear and am stuck somewhere in the med/Lg size. If you are like me, I wouldn't recommend this at all. The same holds true for my UL. Its great as a layer, excellent backcountry tool, but it has way too much room in the mid section.
I'll likely be trading this up for an arcteryx atom... better fit and if you look... I think it has less weight too.

La Sportiva Solution Climbing Shoe - Discontinued Rubber

La Sportiva Solution Climbing Shoe - Discontinued Rubber

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2008

After returning two pairs of dragons, I went for the solutions. I did not originally want these shoes because they look strange. However, their performance speaks more than looks. I wear a size 10.5 street shoe and ordered these in 40.5 (M's8) and ended up downsizing to a 40 (7.5). I wear 41's for testarossas, which I consider a bit too large. I hear a lot of reviews about how comfortable these shoes are. True, they are comfortable for how tight they run, but I think that one person could easily size into 3 different sizes of solutions and claim they feel snug and therefore fit for climbing. When I received my first pair (40.5), I struggled to get them on because of the lining. It is so tight at first but not in the toe, just the width. In my opinion this pair was far too small to get the delicate touch needed to snag tiny holds bouldering hard stuff. I am very happy with the size smaller (40). I will say, I could barely get into these shoes, it took a solid five minutes to get my feet into them, but each time after that it has become easier to get into them. They aren't as comfortable as they were before, but I am glad I downsized. Note that this is is nearly 3 full sizes down from my street shoe, and I can stay in them for a good 15- 20 minutes comfortably.
Conclusion: The reason you see people using solutions for everything from trad to bouldering is because you can size them differently for different purposes. If you want to die hard aggro toe that will put that XS grip to work on tiny stuff, stuff your feet in them. If you want something more comfortable for gym climbing or longer stuff, get the comfy ones.

Five Ten Dragon Lace-up Climbing Shoe - Men's

Five Ten Dragon Lace-up Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 19, 2008

I ordered two pairs of these shoes, 10.5 and 11, I am size 10.5 street shoe, 9.5 Anasazi VCS, 41, Testarossa. The 10.5 fit me best, wore it two days in the gym and my heel an there was just a little too much space in it for me. The toe was incredible, I just tend to find that Sportiva fits my heel better. Anyhow, incredible service from backcountry, free return shipping and free shipping on the new pair, good stuff.
