Stomping Grounds:
Colorado Plateau, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, North Dakota -
Bio:
Avid backpacker, hiker, caver, and nature enthusiast. Interpretation ranger at Wind Cave National Park in the black hills of South Dakota
My favorite place to go backpacking is through the Coconino National Forest of San Francisco Peaks, in northern Arizona, red rock country outside of Sedona, the black hills of South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota.
My personal preferences for the majority of my gear is Mountain Hardwear and The North Face; of all the gear I've tested and put through the ringer, I've never had any piece of Mountain Hardwear gear let me down so far! However, I do really like some of "The North Face's" products as well.

The North Face Flight Bivy
June 25, 2009
I can't speak for the "flight" bivy but I have an Integral Designs Event South Col bivy that I won't leave home without on my trips. It is extremely waterproof, lightweight, compact, and very breathable because of the Event material. I have gone through some torrential rains backpacking through Arizona during monsoon season and with the bivy completely zipped, have stayed completely dry from the rain, and comfortable. At most I might wake up with a little condensation on my sleeping bag but not enough to where it seeped into the bag. That's the nature of bivys anyways. The only downside to it is the Event bivys are a little pricier, expect to pay about $100 more.

Mountain Hardwear Masherbrum Mitten
December 19, 2008
I noticed there is not windstopper membrane in these gloves. How do they stand up to some of those higher velocity arctic winds, or is it necessary to wear a windstopper baselayer beneath these gloves?

Marmot Tamarack Jacket - Men's
December 9, 2008
Don't quote me on this, but I am told that anything with a number 5 reversible zipper will zip into the tamarack. Seeing as the tr6 is a Marmot product and is zip-in combatible, it should work.

Marmot Tamarack Jacket - Men's
December 9, 2008
Jbs is correct, the Marmot Reactor fleece as well as the Marmot Warmlight are zip-in compatible. Quite honestly though, I have found it better to just wear a fleece or vest zipped by itself under the tamarack jacket, rather than zipping it in, as the zip in feature will leave about a one inch gap running the length of the jacket, where more body heat will escape. Just something to think about

Optimus Nova Plus Stove
November 8, 2008
I'm looking into getting either this stove, or the Jetboil personal stove. I'm wanting something that will work well in high altitudes, while I like the effeciency of the jetboil, I dislike the ignition system. What are the effeciency and altitude specs like on the nova?
