not as nice as klean kanteen

Sigg Steelworks Water Bottle - 1.0L

Sigg Steelworks Water Bottle - 1.0L

Rating for this product: 4 April 10, 2010

mouth is too small, and the flip-up handle feels flimsy. Fullfills basic function, but not as well as a clean kanteen.

Excellent Jacket

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 15, 2010

Size: M
My Dimensions: 5'9, 150lbs, athletic build.

-First off, this jacket weighs 13 ounces, so it feels like almost nothing.
-The hem falls 3-4 inches south of my belt, which is just about perfect for me, and it has elastic lanyard drawstrings (like those on the hood) so you can tighten it up if you need to.
-When I first tried it on I thought the arms were too long, but they've proven to be really nice for hiking in the rain, because I can leave them loose, covering my hands almost entirely (nice for day-long hikes in cold Northwest drizzle), or I can secure the velcro cuffs, which are much longer in this version of the stoic (compared to the Stoic 2.0 bombshell design) and therefore much more versatile: I can fit thick gloves underneath them or snug them tight around my bare wrists. The arms are also very roomy compared to the Stoic 2.0, nicely accomodating a base layer and down jacket, and the material is so lightweight and compressible that you won't even notice the bunching of the excess fabric when worn over a tee-shirt.
-The pockets are well-made and watertight. The small inner pocket for an ipod (or map) is a nice touch as well. The hip pockets seem standard but looking inside the jacket, you'll notice that they extend all the way up to the top of the chest pocket. In these pockets on various trips I have stored: a down jacket, a paperback, a klean kanteen, an msr hyperflow water filter, a loaf of bread...you get the picture. Of course you don't have to use this extra capacity and you won't notice it if you don't.
-On breathability: yes, it breathes, and yes, you have to feel it for yourself to understand just how well it breathes. And it's totally waterproof.
On a three day hike at roughtly 3000-5000 ft elevation, I forgot sunscreen (it was pouring and frigid on the first day) and ended up using this jacket instead. For two days it was 70-80F for most of the day, but I managed to stay relatively cool under the large hood. That may be one reason to consider buying the bright blue version: it will reflect sunlight MUCH more efficiently than the black.
-Last but not least: the hood. The design of this hood, while essentially the same system as the stoic 2.0, is in fact a full upgrade due to a few new design details: 1) Cinch cords on the collar are now on the outside (thank you!). 2) Overall adjustment system is much tighter and more customizable, and does not slip because it uses real lanyards instead of those pieces of foam that were on the old stoics. 3) Brim is stiff but not heavy, and just long enough.
-Durability: have not been able to damage it yet, but it IS thinner than the bombshell material, being a comparable to gore-tex pac-lite in thickness. However, those of you that want a jacket that it both thin, breathable AND super durable might want to check this one out: http://tiny.cc/8vepb

Great press

Snow Peak Titanium Cafe Press

Snow Peak Titanium Cafe Press

Rating for this product: 5 September 15, 2009

Will make two cups of coffee- not more. Has one more filter than the bodum models, like a prefilter, which does a great job of keeping grounds out of your cup and also renders the rest of the filter elements more easy to clean. To pour cleanly:
1) Rotate the lid so that the small heat vent is on the handle side of the press.
2) Use the thumb of the hand holding the press to pull back gently on the rim of the lid, causing it to lift slightly. If you've let the coffee brew for 4 minutes (as recommended), then you won't get burned.

It's very easy to do and remember (it's a natural-feeling motion) and it will pour as cleanly as any other press.

I climbed through a few miles of sallal (not sure if that's the right spelling) bushes with this on. Not a single tear. Even sharp branches just slide off. Feels like it will last a long time. All of the pockets are also vents. Keeps the rain out, and the whole thing folds nicely into the hood.

Oakley Eyepatch Sunglasses - Polarized

Oakley Eyepatch Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 August 13, 2009

Not for people with small heads. Luckily, I have a big head and they fit me perfectly. I'm not read to buy "sport," sunglasses, but I've done 40 mile bike rides with these and had no problems. The lenses are huge, which is great because after a few minutes you forget that you're wearing sunglasses. Also: no color distortion.

Black Diamond Orbit Lantern

Works like an overhead light in a house. You probably won't use it for anything but lighting your tent. Bright enough to read by, especially if the inside of your tent is brightly colored.

Not a lot to say. Works extremely well. Read the manual though- I almost didn't and spent the first three nights thinking there were only two functions.

Great Tent

Marmot Aeros Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Marmot Aeros Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 August 13, 2009

Easy to set up. Zippers never get caught, and don't make any noise. Vestibule rolls up nicely and looks like a high-tech curtain. We were camping on the Olympic coast and used one vestibule for almost all of our stuff (the rest fit comfortably inside) and we left the other vestibule rolled up the entire time. Even when it rained we didn't get wet because there is enough coverage (from normal rain) even with the vestibule rolled up. We only had two in this tent, but three would fit easily if you used both vestibules at night. On their site they "suggest" that four might be possible. Maybe if they were midgets, but plenty of room for three. Comes with an uncut guyline and plenty of stakes as well as an aluminum slide-over for a broken pole, and swatches of replacement fabric. You will probably need to get a compression sack though, because the one they send you is too big.

fantastic - after some trouble

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 August 13, 2009

When I bought this filter a few weeks ago, I tried it out at a stream near my house and it was amazing. However, it became less amazing about six hours into an eight day camping trip. At first it was just difficult and slow, but later the flow reduced to a trickle. I was backflushing every 6-8 liters (which is really easy and not much hassle at all once you've done it a few times - just make sure you have a nalgene or platypus. Klean Kanteen also makes an attachement which should work.) Anyways, we ended up boiling water for the last four days. When I got back, I called MSR about it. They asked for my name, address, and the serial number, and then sent one out right away. The call took about two minutes. Now my hyperflow is working perfectly. If you want to be on the safe side, you might consider buying this from a smaller camping store, because they would have the most current ones (having to restock more often). If you decide to buy it on backcountry, just make sure to call MSR and check that serial number. It really is a great little filter; It comes in a double sided carrying pouch with simple instructions. I have done dayhikes with just this - no water bottle - but that was mostly for the fun of it. Like having a water fountain in your pocket.

Princeton Tec Amp Series Flashlight

Princeton Tec Amp Series Flashlight

Rating for this product: 5 August 12, 2009

Does exactly what it's supposed to do. The maxbright is extremely bright and lights up the whole trail. I like that you can switch light modes without turning it off- wish my headlamp had that function. Also nice that it comes with a lanyard AND a clip for your belt. Feels very solid but very light.

Great Sunglasses

Oakley Eyepatch Sunglasses - Polarized

Oakley Eyepatch Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 April 13, 2009

I've been using these for long bike trips and they are fantastic- no distortion at all, and no weird color changes. The coverage is so wide that it looks more like you are looking out of a picture window than wearing a pear of sunglasses.

These are also nice to have if you don't want to buy one pair of sunglasses for riding and another for everything else. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing those ultra-sporty sunglasses out to the beach, but these work fine for both.

Also: I have a fairly large head and they are snug but fit comfortably.

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

Works well- I don't mind the foreshortened sleeves, especially when I'm wearing gloves, but the high color with the swobo logo dead center does make me look like a junior superhero in training. You could get something better, but not at this price.

Laken Kukuxumusu Thermo Bottle - 0.5L

Laken Kukuxumusu Thermo Bottle - 0.5L

Rating for this product: 4 February 17, 2009

Does exactly what it's supposed to, but I wouldn't recommend using the push-button pour spout because it's a bit messy and hard to clean out. Luckily, it's a cinch to just unscrew the insulation and pour into the cap. Keeps your coffee hot and all you need to do to clean it is pour a little hot water and dump.
