Evolv Demorto Climbing Shoe

Evolv Demorto Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2009

Excellence.. These shoes were designed for climbers with "Morton's Toe" ... a condition where your 2nd metatarsal (index toe) is longer than your first (big toe), so as we Mortons toe climbers know that in our normal size asymmetrical toe boxes cause overly extreme pain on the toes.. even the normal symmetrical toe boxes can be pretty annoying during a climb.

Enter the Evolv Demorto: These shoes do a fantastic job at solving the problem. The symmetrical toe box is a little longer where the second metatarsal fits, and the result is a custom fit for any climber that wants a tad bit more un-cramped room in the toe box. These shoes fit pretty true to size... My size 13 street shoe = 13 climbing shoe.

1. The rubber on these is pretty sticky. I have no problem smearing on the Sandstone at Castle Rock, or the Fakestone at indoor climbing gyms.
2. The rubber outsole design is semi-functional but definitely more useful than nothing. i.e. the heel would work well with/without the heel ridges pattern. (I tend to think a smooth rubber heel would be better for heel hooking surface area, but it does ad cushion and I assume that Evolv did their research).
3. The rubber overlap on the top and sides of the toebox is generous which makes for good underhooks and painless toejamming.
4. The lacing is norm, the dual finger loops/pulltabs are norm.

Weird: These shoes have a pretty flat but generous heel area so it makes a weird noise that tells me there is an air pocket with only half the contact. This is because MY heel sticks out more as opposed to a straight line from my calf to the bottom of my foot perhaps.

I noticed: My feet are somewhat wide on the outside middle section of my feet, and I am slightly flat footed so the leather bulges just a bit which probably leads to air leaks.

Overall, these shoes are great to climb in and so far I would buy them over and over. The only thing is, the Olive Green is kinda weird.. the Slate Grey looked way better.. Blue or orange would be awesome.

Pretty Good...Standard +

Metolius Competition Chalkbag

Metolius Competition Chalkbag

Rating for this product: 4 September 19, 2009

This chalk bag makes me happy.

1. I have larger sized hands so it helps that it is a decently deep bag (but not too deep/cumbersome)
2. The dual belt loops do their job to keep the bag in a vertical position for ease of ambidextrous access.
3. The drawstring does it is job.
4. The belt is generous and does what it is supposed to do with its simple plastic clip.
5. Solid stitching and well laid logo paired with (in my opinion) a really cool design. <-- I got the Navy Corduroy pattern.

The only thing that would make this bag better is if it had a pocket for tape. Obviously this is not a major issue or I would not have bought it.
Just hit the button.. Add to Cart.. I don't even mind if you get the Blue one ;-)

Gregory Z 55 Backpack - 3050-3660cu in

May 19, 2009

Pat, notice the elastic loops are vertically in line with the sturdier webbing gear loops that are on the bottom rear of the pack... That is the setup for Ice Axes/Hatchets. You are supposed to drop the handle of the axe all the way through the webbing loop at the bottom of the pack until the head rests on the webbing, and then rotate it vertically toward you and all the way up so that it is upside down with the hand pointing up. You would then use the elastic loops too wrap around, hook to itself, and secure the handle of the axe. Note, most people probably do a custom random gear attachment instead because most people probably don't use this pack for ice climbing with axes. (Not that it can't take the cold and wet..it can)

If you are looking for a 2P tent that has plenty of space, this is it...
The spacious coffin box design and relatively high ceiling makes this tent ideal for 2 grown men - 5'11 and 6'11 - to fit nicely. (Especially because I like to sleep fetal or spread out. Double vestibules and double doors, makes it easily accessible for both parties to enter and exit in the middle of the night with out having to crawl over each other in mid slumber.

Patagonia Footwear Nomad GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Patagonia Footwear Nomad GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2009

I will continue buying these boots until they don't make them anymore...
This is a perfect mix of agility and stiffness, grip, weather protection, and looks...
A few reasons why I'd buy them again...

1.Stiff enough for protected treks up mountains and down the other side in rocky terrain.
2.Agile/Flexible enough for running (yes, running) up and down mountains bounding from rock to rock without rolling your ankle.. I've had a couple close calls, and I believe that the boots definitely protected me.
3.Grip = excellent for scrambling. It sticks to wet and dry rocks. I havent slipped yet when crossing any streams.
4.Generally weather proof. Light - medium Rain is no problem for these boots.. just don't go dipping your foot in a river for more than 1.7 seconds... water easily splashes off but they will soak if you try to drown your foot. One weather proofing con is that, if you do dip your foot, the interior will take a while to dry, even with moderate sun.
5. Break in period is minimal if any.. They felt great right out of the box and continue to feel great, 50-60 hard miles later. On rubbing/chafing: it may occur above your ankle if you don't wear high midweight socks.

Overall, I will continue to speak highly of these boots. I had tried other boots before (e.g. ones from the military, and TNF Fortress Peak GTX, but lately milspec boots were too thin, and TNF Fortress Peak was too big and clunky for my purposes.

I am satisfied with these.... besides, they look good.

These boots should be able to handle feet width EE. You can snug them up top with the laces, but the toe box and ball area is pretty wide.

Sweet Layer

Marmot Power Stretch Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Marmot Power Stretch Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

This is an excellent insulating layer for the brisk chill of the outdoors. Add it to a nice base layer and you have a comfortable warmth to operate with for those moments when a softshell is too many layers for you.

Pros: Excellent insulator, performance fit, high collar helps with soft zip edges.
Cons: Not windproof nor waterproof at all(but not supposed to be), fabric on the underside of my forearm started to micro pill after only a few uses (probably from resting/rubbing my arms on tables).

Overall its a great addition to your wardrobe. Excellence.. I'd buy another if I had to, except the next time I'd get the blue one.
