Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pullover Jacket - Men's

November 4, 2010

I would say that there are better options out there. This is an amazing jacket, but if you're going to be beating on it falling on snow and ice and possible encounters with trees and things I would recommend something more durable. It is super light and packs down to be tiny, but in accomplishing those two things they sacrifice a bit of durability and breathability with just the GORE-TEX Packlite. In addition, to save weight they only put the zip halfway down, which I imagine would get annoying pretty quick if you had to keep taking it on and off.

Lichen

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2010

I just wanted to warn anyone out there that is about to buy the lichen. I realized that color doesn't matter much to most people, but when you're buying such an expensive jacket, i would let it carry a little bit of weight.

The lichen appears to be an almost lemon yellow on my screen, but when I saw it in a store in real life i realized why they call it lichen. In reality it's a really pale yellow almost green color and exactly the same shade of much of the lichen i've seen in the mountains. Just trying to prevent a mishap.

Grivel G14 Crampon

October 30, 2010

The vertical points on these crampons don't give as much purchase when being used on glaciers or steep snow. If you're looking for an all around crampon however this is a good option.

The new-matic version shouldn't climb any worse than the automatic. It just depends on the type of boot you're fitting them on. Pretty much all real "Ice Boots" have a toe and heal bail that will take an automatic crampon.

La Sportiva Miura Climbing Shoe - Women's Discontinued Rubber

October 20, 2009

I tried them both on. The women's shoe is a bit more narrow than the men's (and has an amazing neoprene cushion in the back). These factors could lead to a half size bigger than what you're in in the men's shoe. I'd try it on somewhere first if you can. Otherwise i'd just order the same size

La Sportiva Katana Climbing Shoe - Discontinued Rubber

Rating for this product: 4 October 20, 2009

Very comfortable climbing shoe, comparable in purpose but lacks in performance to the 5.10 Anasazis.

toes tend to wear out quickly.

La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2009

These boots are amazing. Great spring or summer mountaineering boot. Light enough and flexible enough that a long approach to the snow isn't an issue and still still enough that it takes a crampon great and provides ample support in the snow.

Used this boot to climb mount Rainier in July. Was a little chilly standing on snow in camp, but i just stood on a pad if i wasn't moving around. Used this in the wind river range. Back packed over 50 miles on that trip including Ganet peak. Plenty warm.
