Sage VXP

Sage VXP Fly Rod - 4 Piece

Sage VXP Fly Rod - 4 Piece

Rating for this product: 5 May 9, 2012

The VXP is an exceptional multi-use fly rod for the price. The 6 weight handles all nymphing rigs, large/huge dries and streamers. The action is fast and accurate. This rod handles wind and large flies and is perfect for larger western rivers (Green, Madison, Snake, Henry's Fork). Given the price, it will be tough to beat.

Downside: the case, not Sage's typical metal tube; but for the price - no complaints.

Outstanding PDF for Fly Fishing

Patagonia Highwater PFD Vest

Rating for this product: 5 May 9, 2012

The Highwater Vest is an outstanding PDF, it is definitely the best fly fishing option whether in a cataraft, drift boat and/or wadding away from your boat. The vest is designed with a high back which does not interfere with a seat and keeps the vest cool in high temps. The front of the vest is stout, but you have free range of movement whether rowing or casting. Plenty of small pockets for tippet, tools, camera and space to latch on other essentials. Put it on and adjust the fit and you will quickly forget you have it on. Easily adjusts to fit layers, so there is no excuse not to wear a PDF.

Accidents happen, this piece accomodates any water based activity and is functional/light enough to bring on any adventure.

Great stove

MSR Reactor Stove

MSR Reactor Stove

Rating for this product: 4 November 4, 2010

Outstanding, boils very fast and efficient. Have used at altitude without complaint. Only complaint, have returned one for another already as the pot holder can pop out of its hold and impossible to get back in. As such, treat a little more gingerly than I would prefer. Fast, light and reliable - has replaced my jet-boil as I never hung it anyway.

Light and Reliable Shelter

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Ultra Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Ultra Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 November 4, 2010

Great tent. Use as a solo shelter throughout its 3 season intended purpose. Bought as a lightweight backpacking tent that I could fit two in a pinch and the two vestibules was the kicker as I usually head out with 2 60+lb pups. Outstanding option to have the ground cloth and pitch with poles and the rain fly to save weight. Have used throughout the Uinta's, Wasatch and Tetons and encountered some extreme wind and rain. The tent has solid guy out points, but in big wind you are going to feel it. No issue with rain and due to all the mesh, venting even in extreme heat is manageable. Complaints: pole over the entrance for the rain fly, poor design; floor plan is perfect for one (6foot2) but cramped for two if using pads; stakes that come with - pitch and replace; cost - that weight savings comes with a price. Pro's: get what you pay for in quality, no issues; withstood wind when I thought it wouldn't; absolutely waterproof; vestibles - great size and very functionable. Great tent with a steep price tag.

Great piece for cold weather

Rab Infinity Down Jacket - Men's

Rab Infinity Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2010

Purchased as a go between down sweater when an ultralight is not enough and a big-heavy is too much. I use this jacket throughout the winter on cold days (fly fishing, skiing, backpacking). It compresses well for its size and is light weight. The Pertex shell is amazing, brush, small flies - it doesn't tear easily. It also layers nicely and can fit under shells without much issue.

Weight, a bit heavy to lug around everyday unless you know you need the extra warmth. But a great piece to have with you when the temp drops without carrying a high altitude option. Makes a great pillow and nice to see some different color options from every other jacket on the market.

Compare its weight and size with 7+ ounces of fill to the Patagonia Dwn Sweater with 4.5 oz and I think you will find it a great alternative for deep winter use.

Great cold weather option

Lorpen Trekking Expedition Sock

Lorpen Trekking Expedition Sock

Rating for this product: 4 November 2, 2010

Great sock for cold weather activities. Have used one pair on multi-day trips to fly fish in the Fall/Winter. Outstanding option beneath waders for extended periods in the water. Stays put, does not bunch (make sure you get the right size) and durable. These socks have replaced Patagonia Expedition socks and Sierra Primeloft booties.

Negatives: weight/size and drying time. When wet or damp they are tough to get thoroughly dry even in the foot box of a down bag.

Overall, outstanding albeit pricey option for cold feet. When the day can be made by staying warm, this is a great option.
