Good warm weather backpacking bag

Kelty Light Year Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Kelty Light Year Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2011

This is a great lightweight bag for summer backpacking. It compresses really small and the included compression stuff sack is of great quality itself too. I've used this for a variety of summer camping/backpacking and have had no issues with durability or comfort. This bag is actually true to its temperature rating and I've used it for 38 or 40 degree nights comfortably. Only thing to point out is that it runs rather short. Specs say that the regular is good to 6ft, but if you're 5'10" or up, I'd go long.

Kelty Light Year Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

It's a 40 degree bag. In my own experience, this bag is good right down to 40 degrees. I've used it in unexpectedly colder temps without much trouble (i.e. 35) you just need to bundle up! But at 40 it's perfectly comfortable.

No way. I have this bag and at 5'10.5", the regular is just long enough for me. I'd prefer a long for myself. You wouldn't even be able to fit in the regular.

The North Face Ion 20 Backpack - 1200cu in

December 6, 2011

Sort of. I also have a 15.4" laptop and I can get it in, but the sleeve has to stretch just a little bit to get it in. This certainly isn't the ideal pack for carrying a laptop that size as the corners aren't really protected as they protrude a bit from the pack (which is a bit smaller than the laptop).

I think that this pack would be good for running in that it is lightweight, has a decent back panel and most importantly really good hip straps to keep it in place. It should be just about the right size for carrying what you describe.

Osprey Packs Talon 11 Backpack - 549-671cu in

December 5, 2011

I'd refer to Osprey's sizing chart on their website. And as Kate said, that is based on torso length. I'd get out the measuring tape and refer to the charts, but based on your height the S/M should work fine for you.

The North Face Big Shot Backpack - 2015cu in

December 5, 2011

I haven't used this exact model, but I have used other North Face packs, and yes I'd say they do lose a good deal of their initial stiffness relatively quickly. The back panel is designed to retain some stiffness but it certainly wont' be as stiff as it is as new for too long.

Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Glove - Men's

December 5, 2011

These gloves should perform fine in those temperatures. I find that they don't cut wind well enough to really be useful on their own once it gets any colder than the mid to upper 30s, but for the use you described they should do just fine.

Osprey Packs Atmos 65 Backpack - 3800-4200cu in

December 1, 2011

I agree with Dwayne, you should have a pro fit you to a pack. Everyone's fit is a little bit different, and it may be that you need to size up to get a wider spot for your neck. Problem is this could wreck the rest of the fit, but it's worth a shot. Either way, a trained professional can certainly help you find one that fits you.

I've had no durability issues with it being thrown in cars, trains, etc. If you were really concerned you could throw it inside another bag for the flight. (I believe Osprey makes a series of covers just for this purpose).

Osprey Packs Atmos 65 Backpack - 3800-4200cu in

December 1, 2011

Yes you should have no problem doing that. You can also put it under the top closure if you're looking to free up the straps on the bottom for a tent or something similar. The problem I see with strapping something to the side is it will throw off the balance of the pack unless you put something on both sides.

Decent, versatile gloves

Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Glove - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 1, 2011

These gloves perform very well in a variety of conditions. They are thin enough that you have a fair amount of dexterity while wearing them, but they are thick enough that they pack a fair amount of insulation. They are great on their own in fairly mild temps or as a liner under a heavier pair of gloves or mittens in frigid conditions.

My only gripe is durability. I'm on my second pair of these gloves and the material just seems to wear out too quickly for my liking. They have greatly improved the durability of the stitching over the last 2 years, but the fabric itself still seems to be wearing down relatively quickly.

This would be a good back for that. If you need to carry a lot of other items like notebooks, textbooks, etc. you could consider a larger pack like the quantum but this should work fine for you. Do note that the hip belt is not as substantial as that on the talon (potentially important for running).

Mountain Hardwear Carnic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 28, 2011

I got this jacket for a great price on steepandcheap, and I was pretty excited. Unfortunately, my normal size (large)turned out to be far too large for me. As such I had to return it. It looks like a great jacket, with fully taped zippers (including pits), easy adjustment on the extra large hood, and all the advertised features. Size down for sure.

Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack - 1200-1300cu in

January 26, 2011

No it does not. If you want a good technical pack that can be used on day hikes then I'd consider getting a padded sleeve to put the laptop in (like Todd said). If the primary intended use is commuting then I would suggest a pack from Osprey's 24/7 series (the Comet, Quasar, or Quantum specifically) as each of these has a built-in padded laptop sleeve and space for papers, binders, or whatever else you need to carry.

Great all conditions shoe

Merrell Moab GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

Merrell Moab GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2011

I bought this shoe to wear on trail hikes or just walking the dog and running errands around town in nasty conditions. These Gore-Tex shoes do not dissapoint! They have kept my feet dry walking through puddles that were deep enough to cover most of the shoe (though not over the ankle obviously). They also provide good traction on snowy/slushy surfaces. They are very breatheable as well. Only complaint is that they squeak a little bit on hard floors indoors, but these shoes belong outside, so it's not a big deal to me.

Marmot Kompressor Backpack - 920cu in

January 25, 2011

The straps on this pack will allow you to compress it fairly small, but not as much as a dedicate compression sack. If you are willing to accept the trade off of slightly less compression in order to get a double duty piece of gear, then I'd go for it. If you really want the full effect of the compression you already have with your dedicated compression sack then I would stick with that.

Great, long lasting boots

Asolo TPS 520 GV Boot - Men's

Asolo TPS 520 GV Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2011

I bought these boots to take on a series of backpacking trips last year, and they have performed great throughout. They did take a little while to break in, being full grain leather but wearing them around town at first and then on shorter hikes made breaking them in an easy process. They are very waterproof, as you would expect from a boot with Gore-Tex, and I have walked through puddles and small streams without my feet ever getting wet. They are very comfortable, and provide ample foot and ankle support. I look forward to using these great boots for years to come!

Therm-a-Rest Prolite Plus Stuff Sack

Therm-a-Rest Prolite Plus Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2011

This stuff sack does what it is supposed to do and is just the right size for the Prolite Plus sleeping pad (as it should be). It keeps it tightly enough packed that it takes up little space in your pack while being large enough that it is not too difficult to get the pad in the bag. It is durable enough to last and protect that bag from any damage while it's inside it. Good buy.

I use these for backpacking and hiking in a variety of conditions. There are certainly more waterproof and more breathable pants out there, but for the price this is a great buy. Osprey Packs Quantum Backpack - 2075cu in

Osprey Packs Quantum Backpack - 2075cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 24, 2011

I bought this pack to use around school and maybe the occasional day trip. It works perfectly. It has plenty of space, and the laptop sleeve is a great bonus. It also is very durable, and even then Osprey's great warranty means I'm not worried about durability at all. Another great pack from Osprey. The only thing I should point out is that its bottle pockets cannot hold full size 32oz nalgene bottles. Not that this is unusual for a pack this size, but it's worth pointing out. The hip belt is not very substantial, but for my use that's not a problem. Overall a great pack that I look forward to using for years to come.

GSI Outdoors Ultralight Telescoping Foon

Rating for this product: 2 January 24, 2011

I bought this to fit inside my GSI cup/bowl set. It does fit inside the bowl well as it is expected to. However, it is simply not durable. The sliding motion is difficult to move without sliding it right off, and after only minimal use, it simply slides right off of the handle. It no longer stays on. Great Daypack

The North Face Ion 20 Backpack - 1200cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

I was looking for a daypack for moderate length hikes, something to carry water, food, layers, and a camera. This is a perfect daypack. It has a large, well padded hipbelt that takes to weight off of your shoulders with minimal adjustment. The included rain cover is also a great bonus. The lower price on SAC made this purchase a no brainer. Note: I was not able to fit my laptop with a 15" screen in the sleeve since there is a good half inch of plastic between the screen and the edge of the laptop. You may want to measure your laptop if you plan to use this to carry it.
