good but can be improved

Montane Lite-Speed Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 3, 2010

I've had this jacket for 1.5 years and use it year-round to commute on my bike. In Michigan winter, I wear it over a baselayer and a thicker wool layer and am toasty except on the coldest days. As long as there is no rain in the forecast, I take this instead of a hardshell on multipitch climbs in almost every type of weather (in mildly cold weather, with a mid-layer handy -- in winter, with a belay jacket to wear over everything).

This jacket excels at completely blocking wind and doing it with little weight. It dried quickly if you're moving and is great for snowy environments, but overall, does not deal well with wet weather (e.g., rain or ice climbing).

Lastly, I don't think it runs small -- in fact, it feels quite baggy in the mid sections and good to slightly loose everywhere else. I am 5'11 165lbs and own a medium.

Pros:
Excellent wind protection from a paper-thin jacket -- only a few ounces of weight.

Covers neck fairly well.

Nice and long length-wise.

Layers and breathes well.

Retains body heat well.

Multi-use (climbing, biking, hiking).

Material is abrasion resistant.

Napolean pocket is good for maps / light stuff.

Cons:
Hood isn't secured very well (3 dime-sized velcro tabs).

Fit is baggy around the mid-section.

Hood tightening elastic broke after normal use -- had to get it fixed at tailor.

No regular pockets.

Reflective dots have started to peel off after normal use for 1.5 years.

Napolean pocket is bad for small / heavy stuff like keys & wallet.

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 26, 2009

I think I wanted this in a small instead of medium, or maybe it's just the cut. I've been sleeping in this thing and today I took it out for a 1.5mi walk to the grocery store in 10 degree weather (low-wind) with a short-sleeved baselayer underneath and wearing backcountry's tights beneath a pair of jeans. Walking at fast-backpacking speed, I was very comfortable and only felt a bit chilly when waiting for the traffic light to change. At the cafe, it was quite warm, and I was wishing I hadn't worn the tech-tee underneath. But I was fine with keeping it on with sleeves rolled up and zip down.

Tonight I took it to my climbing gym and bouldered with it, again with the tech-tee underneath. It was okay for a few routes, but I had to take it off after multiple attempts.

Overall, I think it would make a great cool-weather bouldering or single-pitch pull-over by itself with no baselayer. That is, of course, if it's not raining or very windy, which would be problematic because layering anything on top of this and trying to climb will surely lead to massive overheating.

It's also very comfortable and great for lounging around in. Like I said, I've been using it as my pajamas the past few nights.

Last bit: wrist-length is great - nice and long. But geez, add thump-loops! I might get some tailored.

Backcountry.com Shift Composite Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Composite Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 14, 2009

Got this jacket and the regular shift, which doesn't have the thinner polartech stretch panels. I'm keeping this one because of the color (black/gray instead of my red shift), and am overall happy with it for climbing / walking around town. It's stretchy enough for climbing easy long routes. I took it to Red Rocks in December, and found it to be adequate with two thin base layers and a wool mid-layer underneath, in 35-42 degree weather on a multipitch climb.

pros:

- really excellent athletic fit. looks great. if you're in shape, you won't find this jacket too baggy like a lot of other softshells.

- nice and stretchy and waterproof

- extra pocket inside the main right-hand pocket, good for keys or ipod

- goat logo

cons:

- forearm pocket isn't in a great place, and is unfunctionally small

- the power stretch panels ARE colder than the rest of the jacket
