Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 13, 2011

The reviews speak for themselves. Just be aware the strap hits a little further back than other flip flops (in your arch normally) and this sandal has a higher arch than say Rainbows or Tevas. That being said, these are the best. Hand down. Chaco also has great customer service, replaced a pair of leather flops when the thong unexpectedly broke. Will never be without a pair.

Little Red Riding Dog

Ruffwear Sun Shower Dog Rain Jacket

Rating for this product: 5 April 13, 2011

Alright, part of the reason I love this is my guilty pleasure of seeing my dog in a coat, but it is actually really good quality. I picked it up on SAC for $35 or so and it was a bit of a splurge but worth it. The hood could use some wiring or a chin strap to keep it over the head, but that is a minor quibble since the main thing is to keep the body dry, which it does. Took the pooch on our normal mile walk and got downpoured (it was raining...wait for it...cats and dogs...nothing...oh well), but this thing kept his body dry. Even the chest strap did a decent job of minimizing the underside getting wet. We get a lot of complements on the coat as well.

Kept Digits from Drowning

Mountain Hardwear Epic Glove - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Epic Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2010

Just took these trips on a winter trip to NZ and they performed better tnan expected on a raining kayak trip and a day of climbing on a glacier. Not the warmest glove in the world so you might need a liner for sub freezing, but kept me warm, dry and able to work a camera most anything else I needed to do. Real deal for a mid-weight glove you don't have to spend a benjamin or more on. Highly recommend.

Great screwgate

Black Diamond Positron Screwgate Carabiner

Black Diamond Positron Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 April 6, 2010

Got a few of these for my PAS and anchors in general and they are great. Easy screw action, keylock is great and they are light as a feather (for a locker that is). I picked up a few of the Quicksilver lockers as well and you can tell the better quality. They are a little pricer than other options, but I have been happy with mine.

Staple for the crags & gym

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Rating for this product: 4 April 6, 2010

First off, I would almost insist on someone learning how to use an ATC first before becoming too reliant on the GriGri, but that said if I am climbing/leading with someone I might not be 100% with, I will set this puppy up and it is much nicer knowing that if I fall and they freak, it will catch me. Not the easiest to belay a leader, but since you will need an ATC to rap, I switch between the two depending on who I am climbing with anyways based on their speed/slack preference/weight/ect....

Petzl Am'D Locking Carabiner

Petzl Am'D Locking Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 April 6, 2010

First Ball Locker biner I have, and it rocks. Like previous reviews, the throw with the ball is shorter and easy to open than other lockers with one hand once you do it a few times. Less wrist twisting and contorting just to put on you belay device. Great addition to the rack.

Stylin' Beanie

Arc'teryx Covert Beanie w/ Pocket

Arc'teryx Covert Beanie w/ Pocket

Rating for this product: 4 April 6, 2010

As with any of the Covert fabric stuff, feels like soft wool to the skin and pretty stylish to boot. I grab this when it is cool outside and want to look good doing it. When it is really cold I reach for my MH Dome Perignon b/c that really gets the job done. This is more fashion than function, but that is what I bought it for honestly, so 3 stars for function, 4 if you are just wanting to look good at the bar/park.

Fantastically Easy

Metolius PAS Personal Anchor System w/ Element Locking Carabiner

Metolius PAS Personal Anchor System w/ Element Locking Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 March 1, 2010

I am new at outdoor climbing and was looking for a PAS for myself, and went ahead and bought this even after my buddy told me to just save some money and buy some webbing and a locking binner. It was worth the minimal extra money to be able to use this thing with ease as I clip in and out of the multiple loops customizing the length of anchor on the fly, while he fumbles around trying to get the length right on his webbing. Can you do it cheaper? sure. Is it the best system out there? There might be, but I am sold on this one for how easy it is to use.

Great Glasses

Oakley Splinter Sunglasses - Polarized

Oakley Splinter Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2009

I am a big Oakley fan, and these basically replaced the old square wires. These have springe hinges, which are not common in Oakleys, but they work well on these. They are light and the optics are great with a stylish look. If you like the wire line of glasses you will most likely love these as well.

Girl is diggin' the Chocolate

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Women's

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 3, 2009

Got this on SAC for the wife after I got mine and she loves it. Replaces an older MH rain jacket that never fit right. Very female oriented cut that looks great on her, and the chocolate color is even nicer looking in person. This jacket is a little muggy down here in the south, but just about everything is. Burly fabric and the welded seams make it look like you spent a lot more for it. Haven't had any issues with performance yet. The only thing I would improve on this jacket would be to put a wire in the brim of the hood to give it a little more rigidity. Aside from that, great buy especially on SAC.

Black Diamond Momentum Speed Adjust Harness - Men's

Black Diamond Momentum Speed Adjust Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 3, 2009

Great harness for the price, definitely worth the money for the speed adjust/double-back feature. I have to have a leg adjust and this is a deal for that feature. Plenty of gear clip-ins and a great beginner to intermediate. Highly recommend for gym or outdoor climbing.

Backcountry.com Overhang Pant - Men's

Backcountry.com Overhang Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 3, 2009

Like previous reviews, love these pants. They are not real stiff and burly softshell material, but they strecth/breath like crazy. They shed light rain nicely and are very comfortable in temps up to mid-high 80s. Highly recommend these for bouldering/climbing and or any outdoor activity. The belt loops a nice plus (my REI softshells have these too) and there are a ample pockets for all your needs. Medium fit me great, normally wear 32-33 waist and 30-31 inseam.

Good idea, poor execution

Backcountry.com Prime Agnello Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Prime Agnello Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 13, 2009

I really wanted for this to work, but after returning two for a rip in the seam after about 1 week of regular wear or a simple wash, I had to give up on this one. The marriage of synthetic and wool is great conceptually, but for whatever reason the area under the armpit and on the back where the stretch paneling meets the wool pulled apart on simple wear. I don't know if this is due to more delicate wool fabric, but the stitching came out regardless leaving a huge hole in the shirt right at the seam.

Aside from all of this, this shirt is way to short. I mean you are going to give someone a belly dance if you reach above your head. I know BC products are athletic fits, but this one was a little much and I am 5'9". I ended up with the R1 from Patagonia as a replacement and the only thing that BC did better was the thumb holes. Those were money on this shirt.

Great Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I agree that if you have a small head it might be a little big. The small was a little large on the misses, but both the S & M fit fine for me (depending on how you like the fit). To give a size reference, I wear about a 7 1/8 fitted cap and the small is real snug for those cold nights, and medium is a little more roomy fit. This kept my head warm down to about 0 last winter, and the windproofing is awesome. It does have a bit of tip on the top in the design on the top of head, but you can't beat the warmth and fit so it isn't a fashion beanie.

Oakley Dart Sunglass - Women's

Oakley Dart Sunglass - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I got these for the wife in the berry/purple, and she absolutely loves them. They look like glasses you would pay 2-3x the price for from some designer line, but you can get the Oakley performance and the style for cheaper with these. The only complaint she has is that her eyelashes hit the lense when it all the way up her nose. Aside from that, these things are money. The case that comes with is really nice as well.

Bad Mother...

Backcountry.com Shift Welder Hoody - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Welder Hoody - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I got this off of SAC the day they unveiled this, and for the price I don't think you could beat it. I got the medium and it is a very athletic fit. I am 5'9" and 185 with broad shoulders and it fits like a glove with a layer underneath. You don't need much under this b/c it is surprisingly warm for the weight, so i wouldn't try and layer this over a heavy sweater due to the fit. The sleeves are on the long side, so keep that in mind if you have to size up. The welded seams rock on these and the hood allows for a wide field of vision that moves with you head very well. The carbon is lighter in person than in the pictures, but still looks great. My only complaint that I can think of is that the two way zipper doesn't catch on the first try sometimes like it should. This is more of an annoyance than a problem, but for everything this jacket offers I will grin and bear it.

Solid Softshell

Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2009

I got this as a gift for christmas from SAC from a family member in abyss (dark blue by the way) and it looks very sharp, but like previous reviewers have stated it is not a technical shell like the Shift (this is the Shift Element). This is a great shell for around town and maybe to layer under a rain shell on a ski trip or weekend hiking, but I wouldn't use this as a stand alone backcountry piece. For that I would get the Welder (the hooded Shift version which although it is a much softer material) or the original Shift (which my wife has and loves). The lack of an internal pocket is a little puzzling, but the outside ones do the job I guess. If you are looking for a semi-technical shell to wear around town and maybe as a layer under a shell this will do the trick and look nice doing it, but for the full price I think you could do better. So 3 stars at full price, 4 at more than half off on SAC.

Backcountry.com Merino Zip T-Neck Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

Good layering piece from BC brand that my wife likes a lot. Not the softest wool in the world, but I don't think it was scratchy on first feel at all. The fit is on the tighter side, but this is an athletic shirt. For the price (with BC coupons) I don't think you can beat it.

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

Got this for my wife for christmas in black, and she loves it. Excellent construction and she found it to be surprisingly warm. This looks sharp on (very feminine fit with accent colors) for her size, but if you are on the tall side it might be a little short. Great overall jacket.

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Fleece Glove

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Fleece Glove

Rating for this product: 3 January 7, 2009

In theory these are really nice gloves, if you can find the right size. Really soft and the gripping on the hands is a nice touch, but the small was way too big. We had to send them back anyways due to ripped stitching, so no fault of BC. As always the service here is top notch.

Great Jacket, Just not for me

Backcountry.com Stoic eVent Shell - Men's

Backcountry.com Stoic eVent Shell - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2009

Read the reviews on this one b/c if you are shelling out the money you need to know what you are looking for. As previous reviewers have noted, if you are looking for a light weight shell for backpacking or other outdoor activity, this is the ticket. I already have a lightweight MH shell (already have the epic which is not as nice but for 1/3 the price and the I already own it and it does the job in most all situations I have used it in) of similar weight, so I ended up returning it. Now, if you want an all around shell that rocks, buy this (the size is a little tricky as noted by others, the large fit very well on my 5'9" 185 frame as an athletic fit with a little room for layering). The main reason I ended up returning (aside from a bit of redundancy that I couldn't warrant spending the money on) was because I was looking for a heavier weight fabric. It definitely has a durable weight for a light weight shell, but I wanted something a little heavier to supplement my epic (which is admittedly lighter than this). I ended up in a Gore-Tex Performance for the weight I wanted (and at 1/2 the price on SAC), but if I need to replace my spring/summer/fall shell this is where I am turning next. FYI, I have noticed that the color on BC products tend to be a little lighter than online, so keep that in mind, but still a sharp looking product overall. One other note, I think they could add an inside pocket in the future to improve this one over. Really hated sending this one back, but I just couldn't justify it.
