  • Stomping Grounds:

The mountains and rivers around Forest, VA are where I play on the weekends.
  • Bio:

Ultra running is consuming my life right now. I am running seven ultras this year with distances of 50K to 100 miles. Next year I plan to run an ultra per month.

New Balance 909 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

October 12, 2009

I find these shoes get very uncomfortable after more than a mile or two on the road. The sole does not provide much cushion.

New Balance 909 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

New Balance 909 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 October 12, 2009

I can't stand this shoe (no pun intended). My feet run very hot in these shoes, leading to a ton of sweating. The water-resestant uppers seem to hold in heat and moisture. The first race I ran with these shoes had several creek crossings, and after 18ish miles, my feet were in awful shape. I bought these because they were the updated version of the 906 and I could not get another pair of those (maybe the best shoe I've ever had). Why did New Balance have to mess up a great thing?

Best Sock Ever

Darn Tough Back-Road Coolmax 1/4 Cushion Sock

Darn Tough Back-Road Coolmax 1/4 Cushion Sock

Rating for this product: 5 October 11, 2009

I use these socks for everything, but the best use I've found is for my ultra running. Paired with a cooler shoe, I've never had a blister with these socks at distances up to 50K. They don't dry super quickly, but they are very durable, great for hot or cold weather, and the elastic band keeps all the dirt out. I will never run another trail without these again. Pretty good for road running too!

So Easy, A Caveman Could Do It

Kelty Yellowstone 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Kelty Yellowstone 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 October 11, 2009

This tent is so easy to set up. I was able to put it all up, tent, rain fly, gear loft, and all in less than 15 minutes... before I even saw that directions were sent with the tent. Its a little heavy, so I've only used it for car camping. I am going to replace the fiberglass poles with aluminum or carbon fiber, then this tent will become my backpacking tent. Probably going to add some waterproofing to the seams before I do that though, just in case...

I get more mileage out of these shorts than all my others combined. Tough meets classy and comfy. I ordered my normal size and they fit great.

Hey, nice pants!

Mountain Khakis Teton Twill Pants - Men's

Mountain Khakis Teton Twill Pants - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 25, 2009

These pants may be the most comfortable pants I have ever owned. I like to wear these to bed in my sleeping bag on cold nights because the material is so comfy. Durable and nice enough to wear to the office, my only complaint is that after a few washes, the legs shrank and my pants are close to high-water status, but that just gave me an excuse to buy another pair. Buy them an inch or two longer than you normally would. The best feature is definately the hip pockets. The shape lest me carry my knife clipped on the side and when I reach in to get my keys, I don't scrape my hand.

Rough Estimate

Brunton Analog Map Measuring Tool

Brunton Analog Map Measuring Tool

Rating for this product: 4 September 25, 2009

I bought this little gizmo to give me a rough idea of mileages on my long weekends runs, and that is exactly what it does. It may only be off by a handful of miles when tracing a 20 or 30 mile trail. The best use I get out of it is on road maps. I like to bring it on road trips and use it to estimate how long until we reach the next city, state, our destination, etc. Overall, its a cool little toy, but I wouldn't rely on it for do or die planning.
