My next pair of pants...

Burton [ak] 2L Apex Gore-Tex Bib Pant - Men's

Burton [ak] 2L Apex Gore-Tex Bib Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2011

I bought this pant off of Backcounty about 3 seasons back. Going on my fourth year of riding in them. By far the best constructed, most durable and waterproof pant I have ever owned. I didn't take great care of them, normally left in my bag at the end of the day with the rest of my gear. Held up amazingly, both to abuse, and the elements. Took multiple broken branches with no holes, and never left me wet. Only complaint I would have is that there is no mesh in the inner leg vents. If you forget they are open, or accidentally leave it unzipped an inch or two, prepare to get a crotch full of pow when you wreck. Can't say enough good things about them. I'll be buying another pair of these once I find another deal on them. $400 is steep!!

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

September 2, 2010

I'd tend to agree with FutureRetro if you are doing a lot of park riding. There are a number of scuffs and minor scratches in the palms of my gloves. Must make the point though that nothing has ever cut through the leather. I typically ride big mountain back country and avoid the park like the plague. Hold up perfect to grabbing tree branches as you blow by them though.

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

September 2, 2010

Just to counter that point about them not lasting a super long time, these are the most durable, longest lasting gloves I have ever owned. I have been boarding for 16 years (20 - 40 days of hard backcountry riding per season), skiing for about 10 yrs prior to that. Prior to these gloves, I went through at least one pair of gloves per season, even considering I wear pipe gloves for the later part of the season. I have been rocking these Hestra's going on 4 seasons now. The only issue I have had which just occured this last season was some stitching coming loose on the index finger, but has not lost any of its ability to stay dry. By my math, even with a higher price up front, these gloves end up costing about 1/4th the cost of any other pair of gloves when forced to purchase a new pair every season. When it does come time to buy another pair, I will be purchasing these same gloves, possibly in a mitt style for added warmth.

Solid Board

Never Summer Titan TX Snowboard - Wide

Never Summer Titan TX Snowboard - Wide

Rating for this product: 5 August 12, 2010

I've been riding strictly NS boards for the last 8 years or so. Been riding going on 16 years. NS boards are the way to go. Built like tanks, awesome 3 years warrranty, and ride like a dream. I've been riding NS Legacy 174's for my last 4 boards. I'm 6'7" ~215 lbs. I wanted something a little shorter and much more agile for those resort riding days. I ended up purchasing a 169 Titan TX w/o rocker and camber. Plenty wide for my size 14 boots. Once you get up to speed in powder, this board handles like nothing else I have ever ridden. So solid and stable, cutting through the snow like a knife through warm butta. Immediately got comments from friends about how hard I was charging that day. All that being said, I went over the front of the board countless times. Not sure if it is just me being used to the extra 5 cm of my other boards or what. On groomers it does not have as much pop as my legacy 174 (to be expected from a board more geared towards big mtn riding). Bottom line, on semi-powder days (fresh 6 inches or so) this is my board of choice. On straight up powder days, or days riding some deep in the backcountry, I will stick with my Legacy. If I were purchasing it over, I would end up buying the Legacy 174 w rocker and camber. I hear that the rocker and camber boards ride a little shorter then those without. If you can get by with a 169 or shorter board, and do a lot of big mountain riding, no question, buy this board.

Mixed Feelings

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Rating for this product: 3 December 22, 2009

Solid filter, high flow rate, easy to use. I'm on my second season using the filter, really have not used it filtering a whole lot of water, but it has traveled a lot of miles with me. I pulled it out of its case during a late season high altitude backpacking trip, and the fitting where the tube attaches to the body of the filter had snapped off, it was super cold, so it may have been a little brittle though. It just kind of sticks out there for anything to snag on and torque until it breaks off. Sort of a poor design in that respect in my opinion.

Worth Every Dime

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

Rating for this product: 5 December 22, 2009

I'm going on my third season riding these gloves. Previously, I was buying a new pair of gloves every season. I abuse my gear. These gloves have stood up to everything I have thrown at them... or in my case everything I have thrown myself at. Trees, board edges, rocks, bindings. This is the first pair of gloves I have owned in 16 yrs of riding that have not pulled apart at the seam between the thumb and index finger. I won't be replacing them anytime soon. The only time I have been able to get them wet is when I take them off for a safety meeting, deep in the trees somewhere swimming in pow. It can be hard to get the snow out of the fingertips of the glove without a removable liner. Minor complaint though. They can be slightly on the cold side some days. A thin low profile liner would be a good idea for colder weather. Still the best glove I have ever owned. When I do end up replacing them, I'll end up buying the same glove, maybe in the mit style to keep the fingers a little warmer.

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

If you do end up getting a lot of snow inside the glove, they can stay wet for a little while. I've been on multiple 5 day hut trips with these though, and my gloves were more or less warm and dry every morning. Not sure what n988s is doing with his gloves to get them that wet, but a few hours a few feet from a fireplace has always done the job for me.

Poor Quality Material

Burton AK 2L Cyclic Pant - Men's

Burton AK 2L Cyclic Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 9, 2008

If all you are looking for is to stay dry, these pants are great. I purchased these pants near the end of last season. Rode in them about 6 - 7 days. Spent 4 days in them this season. This weekend the pants ended up frozen and thouroughly soaked. The goretex kept me dry on the inside but the outer shell was completely waterlogged. The outer material ended up with slight tearing in multiple places near the 2 front pockets. I didn't even notice the pants getting snagged on anything. Bottom line, they will keep you dry, but I do not think the outer material is sturdy enough to hold up on the long term.
