Marmot Nano Jacket - Men's

March 3, 2011

The Nano is a goretex paclite shell, and the Mica is a very thin Marmot MemBrain Strata. The Mica breathes ok, but goretex should breath a lot better. Also, the Nano should be more durable. The advantage of the Mica over the Nano is that it easily packs down to smaller than your fist. Both have similar features as far as a minimalist approach to zippers, etc, but the Mica has normal placement of pockets, whereas the Nano has alpine pockets.

Osprey Packs Atmos 50 Backpack - 2800-3200cu in

April 8, 2009

I dont own either of these models, but from looking at both of them in person, the only real difference besides the frame and harness/hipbelt change is that they made it out of what feels like slightly less durable materials, particularly the various straps that keep everything together and compact.

Never been warmer at -40

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 17, 2008

Other than the lame hood attachment, this is the best coat for the money. Living in Fairbanks for 10 years, I've seen some pretty cold weather. Last year, when the temperature scales met (-40 C and F) for a few days, I put on one light base layer, a very thin softshell, and the Sub Zero Parka on top, with the same bottom two layers on my legs, with the Compressor Pant as an outer layer, and my normal winter boots, and was overheating after simply standing outside for almost an hour. The only reason to get the Absolute Zero parka is if you are heading to Antarctica in winter or doing some high altitude mountaineering, like the description says.

Almost as warm and compressible as down

Mountain Hardwear Compressor Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Compressor Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 17, 2008

These pants are ridiculously warm for the weight and compressibility. I can be warm at -15 with only a light base layer underneath. the only thing that's not so good for any winter activities is it's not waterproof, but there aren't any breathability issues either.
