Scarpa Typhoon Alpine Touring Boot

March 24, 2010

I have skied about two weeks so far in these boots and am questioning how the heals are going to hold up, my Dukes and Jesters really dig into the softer material.

Scarpa Typhoon Alpine Touring Boot

March 24, 2010

Well I guess it depends on what you've been skiing on inbounds in the past. They are light, warm and comfortable. If you are used to sking powerful boots that have 120+ stiffness I think you'd find these to be too soft for your liking. However, if you've been skiing on a intermediate type boot 90 to say 110 stiffness you'd probably like them. . They are great for bumps, woods and skiing pow. Not so great for high speed on stiffer skis, If you ski fast and are on a stiff ski you may need more power than this boot can provide, it can be done, but it is an AT boot. I am 5'10" and 175 and use the Typhoon for mkainly off Piste only, maily on piste I use Nordica Speedmachie 14's. Ps. I don't tour too much in these boots.

Given your weight and since your skis are likely Fischer race skis you may need more power than this boot can provide. If they are close in stiffness to your current boot these would most likely be a good choice for you regardless of your weight and ski.

These run small

Hestra Cloud Nine Glove

Hestra Cloud Nine Glove

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

Very dexterous and warm glove. Seems like they run very small compared to other brands. I used the sizing chart provided and it wasn't even close. Once I was able to get the right fit I must say I really like the glove. Overall I'm happy with this purchase, they fit well, look good, are warm and are dexterous. I ended up sizing up twice before I got the right size.

Great jacket, well built too

Mountain Hardwear Vertical Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Vertical Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

I got this jacket for x-mas and i must say that it is very breathable and had a great fit. As the other reviews said, not a lot of room for huge layers or upside down light bulb shaped people. I use skin tight base layer and Arcterx or MH ploar fleece mid wieght. I made 5 laps climbing up Murdocks peak to avoid the human slalom course and I did get overly warm a few hiking up but was pleased with how quickly the coat got rid of my sweat and I was comfortable. The closures on the sleeves hold well eventhough they have the velco ovals. The hood fits well over my G10MX and I don't feel constricted at all, however, out in the rain with the hood up and no helmet I feel gansta. Pockets on the inside seem sturdy, just have to see if they will stand the test of time, I have no doubt this jacket will hold up very well. The other jacket I have looked at is the Sidwinder SV, but got a better price on this jacket. I also prefer the pass holder that flips underneath as opposed to the sleeve hold on the Acteryx, those seem to turn yellow after a while in the sun. The shell also does not feel as stiff, at least when they are brand new as compared to the Sidewinder SV either. I suspect this jacket is just bombproof too. Lastly I got this jacket because my NF jacket ripped from snagging the pockets on branches, railings and door knobs. The sealed zippers won't catch any of these things or leak like the old NF. I've owned several summit series NF goretex shells and liked them as well as Steep Tech, Spyder, Marker and a host of others I can't remembner. This jacket blows all those away. Really there are only a handful of jackets in the league of the Verticle and this seems to be the best value. You may be able to get something for a bit less but this is it.The last thing I will say is I like the cut of the jacket, it is designed to move and is not restrictive and the venting works very well. Great job MH! I recommend, that's why my name is on this review.Update March 24, 2010:The only change I'd make to this coat is the velcro on the wrist closures, on bigger days snow clogs up the velcro and I find myself fiddling more than I'd like with the closures, it needs a solid peice of velcro rather than the ovals. When it's not snowing hard or I'm not sticking my hand down into wet snow they are fine but I suspect most velcor doesn't work much better in the same conditions. I have been poked by tree branches, skidded across some sharpies (rocks, ouch) and brushed up against all kinds of things and the fabric is holding up well no tears or holes yet after two seasons.

Study strap..

Swix Ski Straps for Carve Skis

Swix Ski Straps for Carve Skis

Rating for this product: 4 January 14, 2009

These have a sturdy strap, but if you are intending to put on anything wider than about 130mm at the tip or tail, they'll be too short. They don't work on my Volkl Katana's they are too wide. Great strap for mid-fatties or below.

Sturdy Blade

Black Diamond Transfer 3 Shovel

Black Diamond Transfer 3 Shovel

Rating for this product: 4 November 10, 2008

This shovel has a sturdy build and is light for the strength of this shovel. I like the handle, although the shaft of the handle has an odd shape it works ok, but I would not want it shaped like this on a big scoop shovel...seems okay on this size though.March 24, 2010 Update: Used the shovel to chop into the ice surrounding the hot tub in Park City and my buddy had some other avy shovel that was bigger but aluminum. My shovel was able to basically be used like an ice chopper to get into what was once snow but so firm you can jump up and down on it and not make a foot imprint. I broke it loose and he shoveled out the big chunks. Shovel is holding up very well after two season of various types of use. Haven't dug anyone out yet thank God.
