Chaco Z/2 Pro Sandal - Men's

September 29, 2009

was a bit cool, around 40F, but the Chacos are still my go to footwear for most trails, especially when making frequent stream crossings. From Missouri to Oregon my Chacos have been over 250 miles this summer and I have loved every step in these.

Chacos are great for coastal hikes, though be careful not to let sand fall in underneath the straps it can make it difficult to adjust the straps and is a pain to clean out of there.

Such a great product

Ruffwear Portage Float Coat Dog Lifejacket

Ruffwear Portage Float Coat Dog Lifejacket

Rating for this product: 5 January 3, 2012

We have had two float coats since summer '10 for our hounds (55 lb Bernese/Husky mix, 50 lb boxer mix: both wear mediums that fit great) and could not have spent the money any better. These coats keep their heads above the water through light rapids, keep them buoyant after long hours in lakes and definitely work well as sleeping pads too! The handles are nice and are robust, I have hauled both them into the canoe or raft many times and never doubted the handle would hold. The yellow color is visible in the water or land when the wander too far. A must have for any pack that heads for the water as the days lengthen!

Osprey Packs Kestrel 48 Backpack - 2800-2900cu in

March 14, 2011

This pack may be a bit small for multiple day stretches between re-supply points. At only 2800 cu/in it may be difficult to pack what you need. If you are a super minimalist or are sharing the load with a partner it could work. I have never done the AT, but go out in the Cascades for 5-7 days and pack my Mystery Ranch Grizzly, over 5000 cu/in but I'm usually alone and don't ofter re-supply. My advice, get it, take it out for a long weekend and analyze the facts after that. If you need a bigger pack, BC will gladly exchange this one for another.

Stoic Breathe T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

March 10, 2011

Well, I have worn this shirt and the similar item from Patagonia in the heat and humidity of the Ozarks (can be stifling), they are light and breathe well. You can feel the effects of evaporative cooling when you finally make it to a hilltop or clearing and the breeze cools your whole body. So go for it. These are so light and pack so small a few tucked away may be great for the equatorial regions. Oh, and the Ozark mosquitoes have no problem working their proboscis right through the polyester.

First Impressions

Sierra Designs BTU ECO Jacket - Men's

Sierra Designs BTU ECO Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2010

This jacket is really nice. The fit is athletic, not baggy or bulky. I got a L and am 6' 175 lbs. In the past few days I have worn it on cold weather (20F, 5F wind chill) run/walks with my dogs with a light merino base, breathes well, didn't overheat and steam up. Zippers are all snag free and pockets smartly positioned. Elastic internal cuffs are snug but not restricting. Can stuff into loaf of bread sized ball using hood. Am able to wear my GoLite L Paclite Shell over the BTU for superior protection from moisture. Really like the PVC free seams, weight to warmth, solvent-free lamination. Really wish the hood wasn't fulltime. 5 stars for construction, materials, versatility and price.

However, some clarification on the materials, the Backcountry.com and SD sites list the shell fabric as Tropozone Green 2.5L. Though, the tag on the jacket differs stating the fabric has the 8,000 g/m²/24 hrs breathability attributed to TG 2.5L and the 10,000 mm waterproofness of the Tropozone 2L. Either way, it's a minor thing, loof further into it on SD's Fabric technology page:
http://www.sierradesigns.com/t-MensTechnology.aspx

Further reviews to come - skiing in Utah, ice skating in Wisconsin and some snow-shoe time in the Oregon Cascades over the next few weeks.

Grandoe Logan Mountaineering Glove - Men's

Grandoe Logan Mountaineering Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 23, 2010

I bought these last winter. After a whole season in them and beginning another, I have to report these gloves are bombproof. I have worn them while chopping wood in 0 Degree (F) windy, bone-chilling weather in the Midwest, while hiking/scrambling glaciated peaks in the Oregon Cascades (Three Sisters Wilderness) and while skiing Mt Hood in the warmer, wet spring conditions. They have never failed to be everything I demand of them, mainly warm and waterproof. The leather on the thumb is soft enough it will not rip apart your nose and the leather on the palm is durable enough for all season use (chopping wood, skiing, etc). If you spend many cold days and frigid nights outdoors in the winter, save your digits with this glove.

Tubbs Wilderness Series Snowshoe - Women's

Hey there,
Thinking of getting these for my girlfriend, she is an expert skier and always in the mountains around Park City and NE Utah. We just got two more dogs and are going to be doing a lot of easy to moderate hiking with them this winter. She would likely get the 25 inch, as we may have daypacks or go out over-night sometime. Anyways, what is the best advice you've got on these Tubbs or any other model you think may be best for the powder and cliffs in the Wasatch and Uintas?

I bought this for car camping and float trips, when weight and size are not an issue. It has performed fine for over 2 years! No leaks for being laid on gravel bars and pine boughs. Lomg enough for me, at 6 foot tall. Easy choice for those in the market for a reliable mid-weight 3 season pad. Not a choice for backpacking, I go with my POE Hyper High MTN Pad.

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2010

This filter is great! I've use it frequently over the past 18 months; whether from Ozark streams, Cascade alpine lakes, Coastal rivers or Rocky Mountain melt water, the filter has delivered clean, cool - not to mention parasite and pathogen free - water, again and again. I'm on my second filter and store the filter in the method described by Jeff Gerhard, see below. This filter is the choice for backpacking, canoeing and everything else - if I went back to Mexico I'd take this filter, sunblock and a Spanish-English translator.

This model is not waterproof. Scroll down to the first review and notice the user says they like the "water resistant" material. So, the pack is water resistant but NOT waterproof. If you want to have a waterproof pack, you'll either need to spend a lot more dough and get a technical daypack - or spend a little bit more and get a properly sized pack cover to slip on when the weather becomes rainy. Nikwax Tech Wash / TXD Wash-In Twin Pack DO NOT USE

October 18, 2010

Hey Alex,

The Tech Wash product is made primarily for outerwear. However, it will not likely damage your tent and should help remove the smell. The water-resistance properties of the tent fabric are most likely deteriorating due to dirt, smoke and other things accumulating on the fabric and reducing the water-resistance. Give your tent a wash with the Tech Wash, try a few inches of water in a bathtub or wash basin, add the TW and hand wash and rinse. I WOULDN'T put your tent in a washing machine as the agitator will likely tangle or tear the guy-lines, fabric, etc. And maybe check out Nikwax's Tent&Gear Solar Proof as opposed to TX Direct for the proofing of your tent.

Also, a common cause of "tent stink" is campfire smoke residue settling on the tent. Choose a tent site well away from your fire and upwind if possible.

Osprey Packs Ariel 65 Backpack - Women's - 3600-4150cu in

October 7, 2010

Hey there,

Maximum carry-on size varies across the air travel industry. For a list of maximum carry-on sizes by airline, check out the list at the link shown here:

http://www.luggageonline.com/about_airlines.cfm

However, this does appear to be just a bit too large. The small model is 3800 cubic inches and (for example) Southwest Airlines maximum carry-on size is 24x16x10 - equal to 3840 cubic inches- so maybe the small model could squeeze through airport regs and into the overhead. But I doubt it if it were fully loaded. the other sizes will likely also be too large for most airlines/airports.

Hope this helps!

Osprey Packs Atmos 35 Backpack - 1900-2300cu in

October 6, 2010

James,

Even the Small version of this pack - at 32L - wouldn't likely fit under the seat in front of you. Obviously, the space will vary depending on what type of plane you are in, though my Osprey 22 - at 22L - will barely fit under plane seats when fully loaded and I have to usually shove it under there or keep it between my legs. If the pack was fully loaded I do not think it would be close to fitting, halfway loaded...maybe. But the overhead is a good option if you find out it doesn't fit.

SealLine Boundary Dry Pack

October 6, 2010

Hey there,

Look above to Chris's review. He was able to fit two sets of gear (bags, pads, pillows, etc) into the 115L bag. This same stuff would certainly NOT fit within the 70L bag. This will certainly be better than trash bags and will last much longer. This bag is made from scrim-reinforced vinyl, while the Black Canyon bag is made from Double-coated nylon. Generally speaking, scrim = woven and woven = tough. Both are roll-top bags, though this bag has cinch straps (70L & 115L models) for additional compression. They should both work excellent for any water adventure. Read the reviews, Google the materials and design and make your choice.

Also, the cup will be very hot after you pour in boiling water and may be difficult to hold with only the handle as you try to pour carefully into it while sitting exposed on an expedition. be careful with the temps, let your water cool a bit before pouring or get a steel mug with an insulator, like a coozie or something

Timbuk2 Mullet Messenger Bag

September 6, 2010

Hey JamarT,
The ballistics nylon is a general term for any nylon fabric made with a "ballistic" weave, usually a 2x2 or 2x3 "basket" weave. There are several weights, referred to as "denier" by the industry which may be used for the weave of this bag, the weight/denier gives the weave it's durability. Generally, 1050 w/d is the most bombproof and likely used in this application, though Timbuk2 doesn't specify (here or their website). Either way, Ballistics nylon is tough and tightly woven and should REPEL not seal out moisture and rain. The fabric could easily be treated with a water-proofing product like Nikwax to improve the water-repellent characteristics after the fabric became grimy and dirty from repeated use, streets are nasty, especially after the rain. You might try looking at the Timbuk2 Classic Bag; it has a waterproof lining (not sure if the Mullet does) and has several favorable reviews attesting to its durability and water-repellent characteristics. Either way, this bag will allow water in if you submerge it, so stay on the streets and trails and you internal items should be fine, avoid any rivers 5 feet deep running down Main Street - SCI.

SOG Knives PowerLock Multi-Tool

SOG Knives PowerLock Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 5 September 2, 2010

I have been using this multi-tool for the past 16 months. I have the V-Cutter model and was fortunate enough to pick it up from SAC for a steal. The components of the tool are very useful, the V-Cutter is great for cutting paracord, plastic and webbing. The steel has held up very well, even in the damp forests of the Northwest where I primarily adventure. The tool can be dis-assembled for cleaning with a 1/4 inch driver and I utilize this to clean out sand and gunk before applying oil or lube. I own several SOG knives and have always been impressed. I never leave for the trails or backcountry without this tool.

Much improved over Z/2 Unaweep Pro

Chaco Z/2 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 2, 2010

Most people know that Chaco designs great footwear, though, the Z/2 Unaweeps are above and beyond "great" footwear. I recently got these in a swap for a pair of older Unaweep pros which had the sole wear through. I mean completely through, one day I kicked them off and Wow! the strap was visible and the sole was partially gone. Luckily, I was in SLC visiting my girlfriend and dropped in the Warehouse to get an exchange. The next day, we headed South to the Grand Step, outside of Boulder, UT for an extended camping, hiking and backpacking adventure. These performed amazingly on the windstone and sandstone in the region. The footbed is comfortable and the sole has an updated, more technical and durable tread pattern. Through water, wind, Sun, snow and sand these carried me everywhere. I wear them everyday, it feels like, and could not be more pleased. Highly recommend! Just be wary, sand will get in the sandal at the straps and make it near impossible to adjust easily, as well as chew apart the straps due to the abrasiveness of sand. Just turn them over, pull the straps side to side and empty out the sand. Then pull the straps to all different configurations so the remaining sand falls out. This and some Nikwak Sandal Wash should keep your Chacos going strong for miles.

Ruffwear Excels Again

Ruffwear Cloud Chaser Dog Softshell Jacket

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2010

Argo is a 55 pound Bernese/Husky Mix. She is almost 3 years old and accompanies me on nearly every adventure, from mountains in the Cascades, rivers in the Ozarks and canyons in Southern Utah. She can take on any terrain and now with the Cloud Chaser Shell, I know almost any weather as well. I have several products from Ruffwear already (Float Coat and Palisades Pack) so I figured she would need a Medium - her measurements are 30" girth and 22" length - and the Medium fits just right. A bit snug on her front legs, but not enough to bother her and the length is perfect. It is a bit too long for my male dog of similar size, as it extends over his hips and he will pee on it if I don't pull it up when he has to go. The YKK locking zipper that pulls front to rear seems sturdy and the underlying flap will keep you from zipping up your dog's fur. The color is nice and the reflective tape works well, can actually be seen at night or dusk, which is certainly a great feature. The DuPont teflon is performing well, though with only a few uses I can't attest to the continued durability of the shell. though as with my other Ruffwear gear it will likely hold up through many rough days and fun adventures.

Mountain Hardwear Lightpath 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

June 1, 2010

You heard right. By repeatedly creasing the tent material along the same lines it can wear faster and cause the material to rip, tear or just perform poorly. You should stuff the tent, being careful to avoid snags or zippers, and DO NOT put the poles and stakes in the same stuff sack as it could rip the tent. Stuffing is always preferable, especially with sleeping bags too.

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

June 1, 2010

If you get your boots dirty, or have worn them for a few adventures without cleaning them they will lose some of their ability to repel moisture. You can tell when moisture sreads along the grain rather than beading up and rolling off the shell. Same as most any waterproofed gear item. Rinse 'em, clean 'em and proof 'em to keep them going strong season after season. Can use Nikwak's products or something similar.

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Hyper High MTN Sleeping Pad

March 5, 2010

I use this pad in the high Cascades here in the NW and find it very comfortable. Though, it is not like a BA Air Core as it only has an air chamber in gel insert (the hourglass looking shape) and the rest of the pad is closed-cell foam. The foam has a thickness of approx. 3/4 an inch and the insert when filled with air has a thickness of 1.5 inches.

This is a high altitude alpine/mountaineering pad and has insulation properties you will not find in lower end pads, like the BA, though may not be as comfortable. I have never been uncomfortable sleeping on it, though generally it is a it less comfortable in some ways than my old ThermaRest. However, I'd choose this for the construction, insulation, weight and size on any trip whether a single night or a few weeks on the PCT.

Replaced my Kerouacs

Sanuk Scurvy Crepe Shoe - Men's

Sanuk Scurvy Crepe Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2010

These Sanuks wear much better than my old Kerouacs, which after nearly 2 years of regular abuse were finally wasted by my dog. These Sanuks are much better as they do not have an over sized sole(as Sidewalk Surfers do) which was breaking down at the front from impacts with sidewalk breaks, stairs and the like. The laces and construction are an improvement on just slip-ons like the sidewalk surfers. Also, is it bit narrower in the toe and heel than sidewalk surfers. Bottom Line + Comfortable, Well-Made & Damn Cool

This might not be a great solution, with 2 adults and a dog you'll likely want more usable space, notice the support poles, my advice get a Hilleberg Nallo 3 or Nallo 2 GT. The extra weight won't be too much between 2 packs and you'll love the the extra space, superior construction and materials, vestibule and ease of use that are hallmarks of Hilleberg. A bit more expensive but worth every. have used my Nallo 2 with two dogs on the PCT and would never get anything else but a Hilleberg if you plan on living in a tent for several weeks

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Hyper High MTN Sleeping Pad

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Hyper High MTN Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2010

Nicely constructed pad, foam padding is right thickness and seems durable enough to survive through years of tough usage. The Aerogel insert provides great insulation, used in Missouri a few weeks back when the low was -4 F and was fine in my 20 F Sierra Designs down bag. The following night was a little warmer and I used my old Thermarest for an hour, not surprisingly became quite cold and went back to this pad so I could get some sleep. This is certainly a great alpine pad, it is lightweight, leak-proof and insulates very well. My long bag (6'6") hangs off a little but not a real issue so far. Taking this into the Cascades during the next few weeks, more to come concerning continued performance.

Nice. But no "naturally non-stick"

Snow Peak Titanium Multi Compact Cookset

Rating for this product: 4 September 29, 2009

I have thoroughly tested these pots and their lids/sauce pans extensively. Do not try to fry an egg in the lids, non-stick does not exist. However, the set is very light and works fine for what I need on trails, usually water boiling, stews, tea, etc. And the egg was a purposeful attempt to put "naturally no stick" to the test. Great set, compact and easy to clean.

MSR MIOX Purifier w/ Batteries

August 26, 2009

I would say that depends on the person, I know people who have lived in the NW for years and never contract giardia because they have developed a stronger tolerance after many years of drinking stream water. http://www.miox.com/miox-solutions/The-MIOX-Advantage-safety.aspx

Here is some text i pulled from the site.
"In contrast to alternative disinfection methods, the safe on-site generation of hypochlorite uses only salt, water, and power as feedstocks. Neither the salt nor the hypochlorite produced is classified as hazardous by the regulatory agencies. The concentration of the generated chlorine solution is below the Hazardous Communications Standard (HCS) safety threshold limit of 1 percent. Although hydrogen gas is evolved from the electrolytic process of on-site generation, automatic venting designs or air dilution systems safely vent this gas to the atmosphere. On-site generation has an excellent safety record, with more than 4,000 units, from a variety of manufacturers, installed worldwide. "

GoLite Spectre Jacket - Men's

GoLite Spectre Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 27, 2009

This jacket is lightweight and stores very easily in my daypack. I have used it while running, biking, dog walking and hiking and so far am stoked with its performance and design. The air vents are large and provide ample ventilation under all the above conditions. I am 6 ft. and 173 lbs. I have the large and it fits great with enough room for a shell underneath if necessary or even a very lightly loaded daypack in unexpected downpours. When the rain falls I excitedly rush outdoors to enjoy the abandoned trails from inside this beauty.

Oh so nice

Chaco Z/2 Pro Sandal - Men's

Chaco Z/2 Pro Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 27, 2009

I've had these for a few months now and am very pleased. Chaco is a progressive company and manufactures a great product. These have been used for kayaking, hiking biking and many, many dog walks. The arch support is what I expected, comfortable, and I really prefer wearing these over any shoe/sandal I currently own. The weight is fine and after a few weeks these felt like I had been wearing them for years. Highly recommend Chacos.

Thought I would tweak this after I wore these Chacos on a 40 mile backcountry hike in the Seven Devils Mnts of Hells Canyon. The terrain varied from steep scree switchbacks, to boulder fields, to arid burn areas and my Chacos were a dream. Switched from wearing my Salomons to Chacos for comfort, arch support is great and for ease when making stream crossings. Other than an occasional stone under my toes these performed excellent

Great design...the dogs love 'em

Ruffwear Palisades Pack II

Rating for this product: 5 April 1, 2009

I picked up 2 packs for my husky/border collie and boxer/lab off SAC a few months back. They get so stoked when I take them down from the gear wall, knowing an adventure is imminent. The boxer mix is about 50 lbs. and the small is the right size, the husky mix is 60 lbs. and has a deep chest and could probably move up to a medium but the small is adequate with an inch or two left in the straps. Hydration bags are excellent, though it hasn't been to warm yet I'm sure this design feature will help regulate their body temperature, I fill a liter on each side, sometimes a bit more. I have packed about 20 lbs. (food, water and bowls) in them and the weight carries nicely. The ability to detach the saddle bags is great for taking breaks or going swimming. The design seems very robust and I have had no problems so far. Though, initially the hydration bag caps were very tough to remove though this has changed with several uses. If your dog loves the trails, they'll love this pack and so will you. I have even tied my sleeping pad on top of the husky/collie's pack and it worked on great. Awesome gear!

Were recently used by noth my dogs on a 40 mile backpacking trip in the Seven Devils Mnts in Hells Canyon, Idaho. Both were lightly loaded (say 10 - 15 lbs) with food and other things and the dogs were able to take on anything we encountered. Scree, boulders, up and down these stayed on and stayed tight, cause you can cinch them with the straps in the outer pocket. Handle was extremely helpful when crossing trees that had fallen at a downward angle across the trail. Last night there, July 13, had an inch of snow and ice and these helped to keep the dogs warm and dry while we hiked out.

Ruffwear Palisades Pack II

March 30, 2009

In my opinion Ruffwear sizes tend to run a little big. My largest dog is 60 lbs with 22.5 inches from base of neck to tail and 28 inches in girth. I got the small expecting the pack to run big and it fits snugly, she could wear a medium but the small is fine. I would say a medium pack is probably most adequate for you lab though cannot be exactly sure. If not, backcountry has a dynamite return policy. Either way your dog will love this pack

Salomon 3D Fastpacker Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

Had these for a couple of months and couldn't be more impressed. The lace system is truly awesome and very convenient. My dog chewed one of my laces and I replaced it with some 200 lb. test twine that is nearly the same diameter and has worked out well. I've spent many long days in these both on trails and off. Great support and grip, contragrip flat out rocks in wet and dry conditions. From experience these dry fairly quickly while on the move and are quite light for the robustness of the design. Anti-debris mesh works nicely and no thorns have yet penetrated them. I wear an 11 US and these fit true to size as do all my Salomons.

Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack - 1200-1300cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

I use this pack for all purposes, as a daypack to head up to the summit and to tote my unnecessarily large corporate finance books. Fits a Camelbak nicely and still leaves room for other necessary gear. This material and stitching is very strong and the design spreads the load evenly and comfortably when on my bike, on foot and scrambling along ridge tops.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 27, 2009

Got these shoes a couple months back and have put them through a gauntlet since then. I couldn't be more pleased. These are light and breathable shoes that dry well and perform magnificently on Missouri trails be it dirt, rocks and roots or mud. Salomon has a great eye for tough functional gear and these shoes are no different. It'll be a sad day when these get retired but all the memories will help me overcome the travesty. If you're serious about covering terrain effectively and comfortably these shoes are a great choice, not to mention Salomon's warranty program is excellent if some unfortunate fate should befall your feet. Take to the wilds with confidence and joy each time I put 'em on.

Big Agnes Elkhorn 2-Person Tent w/ Footprint

Rating for this product: 5 March 27, 2009

Picked up this tent last fall and have used it in all conditions; from 25 F with sleet and snow to 65 F staring into the infinite cosmos. Enough room for my two 60 lbs. hounds, a 2500 cubic inch pack, a full size Thermarest and myself. The footprint is a welcomed addition to anyone familiar with soggy woodlands and the pole system is robust. Spent one afternoon in a rain storm with 20 mph winds and was never more comfortable and confident. Reading Muir has never been more enjoyable, not quite lying in sulfur steam in the Sierras but sure was an insightful way to avoid the rain. This tent is nice if you're a backpacker at near 5 lbs it is a crucial component of any excursion I go on.

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 March 27, 2009

This filter system rocks! Haven't ever used it for standing water but many streams and each time the water is awesome tasting and clean, clean and clear. If you're using tablets STOP or at least give this a try. If you're crazy about weight this shouldn't be an issue for you. It is fairly light and packs up nicely. Whenever I'm storing it for a while I flush through a gallon or so with a tablespoon or bleach to avoid any bio-residue and funky growth. Just run a liter or two through before your next gulp. Cartridges are quite long-lasting and easy to clean. No ghardaia yet and no midnight sprints to the bushes. Worth the weight everytime, it goes anywhere I take a pack, be it Yellowstone, the Medicine Bow Mnts. or a float trip in the Ozarks.

This gear item recently got a heavy workout when I went on a 40 mile 5 day expedition in the Seven Devils Mnts in Hells Canyon, Idaho. It delivered clean, safe water from streams and lakes consistently for a friend and I. We pumped 10 -12 liters each day and were always impressed with its flow rate and reliability. If you have hung out with the mosquitoes next to a lake waiting for you bottles to fill this filter will get you out of there the quickest and with the fewest bites.
