Marmot Aegis Jacket - Men's

The Aegis keeping the wind at bay above treeline. Love this jacket. Throw a fleece or down sweater under it and you are sitting pretty when the weather goes South.

Columbia Bugaboot Plus XTM Boot - Men's

Columbia Bugaboot Plus XTM Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2011

Honestly, this boot just f-ing rocks. I bought my first pair at a Fleet Farm in Wisconsin for my move up to Alaska. They became my everyday boot for the entire year and a half that I was there. I love the height to them and they just hug my feet and don't let go. Great tread and the warmth is awesome. Definitely not for warm or even spring weather as your feet will sweat. But for a solid pair of winter boots that are legitimately waterproof... this is it. After about 2 years of almost daily wear I finally broke down and bought another pair. The same exact model on clearance. I see they have a new design with a few tweeks but in essence it looks to be the same boot. True to size. For this price you are not going to get a better cold weather boot. Columbia got it right with these. I'm considering stockpiling just in case they ever discontinue this product. It's that good. Just buy it.

Marmot Aegis Jacket - Men's

November 2, 2010

This thing is pretty light and doesn't take up much room in the pack at all. I can't compare it's compressibility to the MH though. Nalgene size is pretty accurate. I usually just stuff it in my pack to fill in the dead space. You'll forget it's there until the weather turns on you.

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2010

Obviously this thing has high praise but I thought I'd throw my .02 in. First off I got this thing half off retail otherwise I don't think I could justify dropping 500$. The label does say "made in Canada";I know there has been great dispute over the product manufacturing. As for sizing, I am 6'2 210lbs and the large fits like a dream. For those of you who wear skinny jeans and girl shirts you might think that I am crazy but for those of you who use the product as intended and are not just name dropping or making a fashion statement then I would say (at least for the large) that it is a true to size fit. The hood is very big but the cinch cords make it fit just fine especially when I wear a ball cap. The length is definitely long in the back which is great. The craftsmanship is top notch. I do wish there was a second zip on the main zip but thats just being nit-picky. It is definitely a heavy jacket compared to most but this thing is absolutely bomber and a true necessity when you are dealing with the lovely (SARCASM) Alaskan weather with weeks... not hours or days of rain.

Mountain Hardwear Drifter 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Mountain Hardwear Drifter 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 3 August 2, 2010

So first off, I got this for a pretty darn good deal. Less than 200$ for the tent and footprint so that was a major factor. Was in the market for a spacious all purpose tent. I normally go lightweight but needed a tent for car camping and when you go camping with those non backpackers (IE: family/girlfriend) it gets to be tough when you are cramming too much into too little space particularly when you are stuck in Seward AK rain. Just got this today so no real world testing as of yet. Pro's: very spacious. I am 6'2 and it is the first tent I've had that I don't touch the walls. Kingdom for 2 but could easily fit 3 although tightly. Good size vestibules and the clip poles are probly the best innovation in tent design I can think of. Love that it has a square footprint and doesn't taper. Great headroom. Construction seems bombproof. Like the fly/footprint pitch option. Very easy to set up. Cons: Obviously it is heavy for backpacking but if you are splitting it it is definitely manageable but for car camping it seems a great choice. Bulky roll up. Too many zippers. MH could have easily reduced weight by just eliminating some of the metal. In the end I think I will give this new tent a few trial runs in the rain up here in AK and if it holds up it will definitely go into the "spacious car camping / group backpacking tent" category. For less than 200$ you can't really go wrong, especially seeing as this thing is LONG. There aren't many ultralight tents for tall people so this will have to do. For the rest of my solo outings my bivy will still reign supreme. Hope this helps. Will update after a night or two in it and get a pic up.

Mountain Hardwear Drifter 2 Tent 2 Person 3 Season

July 23, 2010

Anyone have any good things to say about this tent? Both BC and REI are out of stock so either there is a recall or they are being snatched up because of the price and weight. For us hammock/bivy campers who are looking for a $ tent with tons of floor space this seems like a steal. 160$? Please I can spend more than that on drinks after a long hike. Better spent on expanding my gear closet.

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 July 12, 2010

Great pad. A bit more expensive than most but worth the versatility. It folds so there is no more hassle of ends curling with a traditional roll pad. Great to throw on the ground against a log to use as a camp chair. Lashes easily. Have had my pad for quite a long time now and there are not tears or holes and the hinges have held up great. Use this with my Prolite inflatable for winter camping and it keeps me nice and warm.

GoLite UltraLite Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

July 7, 2010

haha, significantly reduced insulation on the underside. I am going to use that to describe a quilt from now on. This would obviously be an understatement. The difference between this and the adrenaline is that this has NO insulation on the bottom as this is a quilt. As the above stated, it depends on your needs and camping style. By the way... quilts rock and it is definitely worth a shot if you haven't used one before especially because this one is $.

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

July 7, 2010

You may have a hard time finding a stuff sack to cover it. Can I ask why you would want to cover it? It is a closed cell foam pad so it will not soak up water and if it gets dirty just rinse it off. If you do want to get a cover for it I think the only thing that would most likely fit is an old tent stuff sack which will give you the length you need. Or you could get a heavy duty contractor trash bag and cut it down to size and just use a twist tie or piece of string to tie it off. Realistically though this is a ground pad that shouldn't need any protection. Hope this helps.

The North Face Paramount Peak Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 7, 2010

Got mine on sale which sweetened the deal. Dry incredibly fast. Easy to zip on and off the legs. I'm 6'2 32/34 waist and found that the large long was just too long and way too much fabric. Tried the medium/long and they fit perfectly. Docked one star because the leg zip broke but I was able to remove one tooth and slip the slider back on without having to return it. Love these pants and the price and they fit like a glove with great range of motion. Don't hesitate to buy.

This would be a great option for the tarp camper who wants the bug protection. You don't need a "rainfly" just go and get a lightweight sil nylon tarp. That will not only cover your mesh bivy but also give you a living space to cook and relax when the weather turns bad.

Osprey Packs Stratos 40 Backpack - 2200-2600cu in

Osprey Packs Stratos 40 Backpack - 2200-2600cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

Love the size, the color (black), the fit (I am 6'2 205 size large pack), and the air core back is great in the summer. This fits everything I need for any summer outing and short winter outings. For the intended use of a daypack this has more than enough space. For the lightweight hiker this is a great pack that can hold it all for at least a weeklong summer trip. The only downside is that you can't remove the top pocket and the stretch sides are hard to get bottles out of when the pack is loaded. Overall good load distribution, 30 lbs is definitely reaching the limits of my comfort level with this pack. 22-26lbs is the sweet spot for me. Highly recommend.

I have checked this bag twice. The straps with a bit of work end up being pretty out of the way. I however have always checked my hiking bags in a heavy duty clear plastic bag with the top secured with duct tape. Be sure to bring it to the counter out of the trash bag in case they want to search it but after that stuff it in the trash bag and straps are no longer a worry. When you get it at the carousel other than some small tears in the outer sack my backpack has come out clean and intact. FYI.

Nalgene HDPE Narrow Mouth BPA-Free Bottle

Nalgene HDPE Narrow Mouth BPA-Free Bottle

Rating for this product: 4 October 27, 2009

It's a water bottle, what else. I only use two of these for winter camping when I need to put hot liquid in it for the bottom of my sleeping bag. Otherwise I dont really see the point in spending more than the cost of a 1L Aquafina bottle which has the main advantage of being a tad lighter and you are recycling. But for winter use it is your pretty standard bottle that wont melt and does not leave any taste in your water. Good buy and its the cheapest.

A great buy if you know what you are doing

MSR Twin Sisters Tent 2-Person 4-Season

MSR Twin Sisters Tent 2-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2009

This tent is more than adequate for alpine and winter conditions. I live here in Alaska and this tent is certainly a great buy if you are looking to escape the elements in the colder months. It is light enough to be carried solo and large enough to accomodate 2 + gear. If you learn your gear and know how to pitch this thing tight it will shed snow and wind very well. Architectually this design is much more effective in wind and snow than any 8lb winter dome tent with cross poles. The snowskirts make this thing bombproof. Even with the two trekking poles in the center I find that I have plenty of room to sleep on either side of the supports. I am 6'2 and have TONS of space. If you are looking to use this outside of snow conditions be wary that it is hard to get a tight pitch if you cant stake down the edges at precise places, in the snow it is easy but in rocky ground you are going to have problems. I have experienced condensation but nothing to balk at seeing as this thing only weighs 1lb 12oz. Easily regulated with the double zipper and rear vent. Know what you are buying and you will not regret it.

High level of craftsmanship, packs small. I am 6'3" 205 lbs and do not find this bag tight. Plenty of room for me to sleep comfortably. Love the half zip, no more sleeping with a zipper in my side. Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets - 30 pack

August 27, 2009

I have not been to Africa but these tablets are great, little taste and have used them with multiple water conditions. You don't want to chance a filter breaking and then not being able to get the parts. Be sure to get a shit ton of these things though because 1 tab only treats 1 liter. Also, use only clear bottles, because of the amount of sunlight if you are able to put the micropur in the bottle and then let it sit in direct sunlight you will get the UV exposure along with the chemical treatment. About 5-6 hours in the sun will help as well. You can always double up on filter and chem treatment, can't hurt. Hope this helps, good luck in Africa.

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

August 26, 2009

Weight and price are the two of the big factors. Here are the specs laid out for a size regular for each

BA - Neoair
$71.96 - $149.95
72" x 20" - 72" x 20"
rolled size 5" x 9" - 4" x 9"
weight: 24oz - 14oz
R value 4.1 - 2.5

The neo does not have any insulation whereas the BA has a layer of primoloft which is why the neo is only a 2.5 R value. Which one you buy is dependent on where and when you camp. If you like inflatables (which I don't) then you need to decide how much weight you want to put into a pad. 24oz compared to 14oz is a huge difference. Price is a big factor, if you are a weekend camper/hiker go with the BA it's cheaper. If you are not concerned with weight go with BA. The only real reason to go for the neo is if you A: have the money, and B: if you are a light hiker. I'm a light hiker though and I wouldn't even spend that much on a pad. Hope this helps.

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

August 11, 2009

For me personally I find that the Jetboil is way to heavy. At 15oz without fuel it certainly one of the heaviest solo cooking options on the market. I am not familiar with the frypan you are talking about but I had the curx lite for a bit until I lost it and it was a pretty decent stove for the price and weight. I currently use as a pot the BC 700ml Titanium pot/mug. Big enough for solo cooking and light at 3.7 oz. But I just looked and they discontinued it but there is the snowpeak. Go light man, you don't need to be lugging around a 1 pound water heater without fuel. Hope this helps.

Mountain Hardwear Viperine 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

August 11, 2009

Suggestions: Kelty Grand Mesa 4 tent, Kelty Gunnison 3.1, and the Marmot Limelight 3. I have never used the Kelty tents before but the reviews on BC seem positive and the price is certainly right. I have used Marmot gear before and love it. They really know how to make some good stuff. The Meteor light I would knix, heavy at 7lb 1 oz and not enough space for 3 comfortably for the weight. 55" x 93". Couldn't find the viperine but the Big Agnes if you don't like the Kelty looks to be a good choice although it is a bit heavy. But if you are looking to spend around 250$ then you are gonna have to deal with a heavier tent. But hey who cares that's why you got 3 people to divy the weight. Hope this helped. Good luck in the search for a new tent, and remember, BC has an awesome return policy. I hear you on the underpaid overworked paramedic , nurses make the big bucks.

Lafuma X1000 Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic DO NOT USE

August 7, 2009

First off, I would nix the rectangular sleeping bag idea. Especially if she is going to be strapping it to a ruck or carrying it in any way shape or form. They are bulky and heavy for the most part. The mummy as you said does not open as much but I use my summer mummy bag as a quilt all summer by just opening it up and then putting my feet in the foot box which keeps the bag from getting lost while sleeping in the tent or in this case the hostil. But that is just my opinion. On top of that, the mummy bags especially if she is not really concerned about temp rating are going to be VERY light and super compact. Keep with the Lafuma brand, very cheap money wise and are a good product. I currently use the Lafuma X600 a 45deg F bag as a summer bag and it is great. Check that out and if it is not warm enough go with the Lafuma X800 40deg bag. 29 oz packs to a 6x12 inch bundle and only costs 55$ from REI. Hope this helps.

I have used a canister stove at roughly 10,000 feet and although it works you do find that you are utilizing more fuel due to pressure loss. If you are planning on using this above 9,000 feet I would suggest a liquid fuel stove. It may be a bit heavier but you will save weight by utilizing less fuel and not having to carry out used canisters. I do own this stove though and for a low alt. stove you can't beat the price and weight. Hope this helps.

Rating for this product: 5 June 30, 2009

Slowly bringing my base pack down and made the conversion from the ultra bulky (ultra dependable) closed cell pad to this little guy after making the mistake of trying out a non-inflatable with great disatisfaction. This pad is super light, extremely comfortable, and if you have a repair kit, totally bombproof. I use this with a quilt and find that the material is not at all harsh against my skin. Also, I am 6'2 and use a regular and find that I am not at all uncomfortable or finding pressure points. As long as you use a stuff sack pillow with your head off the pad. Great buy.

Inflatable Pads Not For Me

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy

Rating for this product: 3 June 30, 2009

Tried this pad after I returned the clearview due to material. Inflatables are a rather new thing for me as I am used to closed cell pads but thought I would join the rest of the group and get a really great nights sleep. This pad is nice, it kept me warm in 30 degree weather but the pad itself I just find uncomfortable and finicky. Perhaps I just didn't give it enough time, but I feel being 2.5 inches off the ground means that you either have to never move at night or be ok with half your body being off the pad. If it works for you great, for this closed cell guy, the move was a mistake. Returned it due to no fault of the manufacturer. Quality seems tough and durable.

Big Agnes Lost Dog Sleeping Bag: 50 Degree Synthetic

May 26, 2009

You are right. You will not have insulation under your feet. BA bags are meant to be used with inflatable pads that go from head to toe. You could slip your 3/4 pad in the pocket and be just fine, the only thing is that your feet will not have any insulation. Which if you bought a 3/4 pad means you are using your pack or some other kind of barrier. The Neo would work with the BA but personally you would be better off going with a different setup. If you are looking for a cheap summer bag checkout the Lafuma brands, really nice bags that won't break the bank especially the summer bags and they have all around insulation. Hope this helps.

Sea To Summit eVAC Dry Sack

Sea To Summit eVAC Dry Sack

Rating for this product: 5 May 26, 2009

Got the 5L bag to use as a dry sac for my summer sleeping bag and couldn't be happier. This thing holds my bag with plenty of room to spare and the breathable bottom is great for smashing the bag down to nearly nothing and getting all of the air out (and not letting it back in). Did the bathtub test and let water rain down on it for damn near an hour. My sleeping bag stayed bone dry. BUY THIS!

Short spoon a little too short

Sea To Summit Alpha Light Utensils

Sea To Summit Alpha Light Utensils

Rating for this product: 1 May 18, 2009

Just got this not too long ago and was looking for something small that would fit inside of my BC 700ml Ti pot. Tried it out with some freezer bag cooking in my living room and found that this thing 1) does not nest inside the BC pot with stove and canister 2)is just too damn short to really eat with without getting food all over your fingers. Not worth the weight savings. Will return it and go with the regular size or maybe even upgrade to the long seeing that I would have to store it in the brain of my pack anyway. DON'T BUY THE SHORT unless you want to be frustrated.

Brunton Talon Canister Stove

May 18, 2009

No not at all. I usually just use a few layers of tinfoil mushed together which can then be folded quite small and stored in my pot or pack. Usually though I only use 3/4 windscreen which means that the foil vertically only goes up to just past the bottom of the pot and does not wrap around the entire canister/stove/pot which leaves me access to the handles. Where the foil is open on the one side is where you sit so your body becomes the last 1/4 of the windscreen. I will try to post a pic for you.

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 700ml Pot /Spork

May 18, 2009

Yes this pot does fit a nalgene bottle inside of it. The diameter of this pot is 9.7cm or roughly 3 3/4 inches. Height is 11.2cm or just about 4 1/2 inches. IMO though, you will most likely be able to fit your cook gear into this pot. Alcohol stove and fuel or canister stove and fuel unless you go the old campfire and rocks route.

Backcountry.com Titanium Pot w/ Lid - 700ml

May 18, 2009

I have this pot and find that usually no matter what stove setup I have (alcohol or canister) the handles and lid will get hot. The good thing though is that it only takes about 30 seconds for the handles to cool after it is off the burner seeing as titanium does not retain much heat. Best solution; use a hanky which can also be used inside the pot when done to reduce the noise of the canister/alcohol stove. Hope this helps.

Snow Peak Titanium Cookware - 3pcs

May 14, 2009

One of my new favorites is the Idahoan(?) quick packs instant potatoes. They are roughly 4oz for about 500 - 600 calories and come in a bunch of different flavors. To add to that all you have to do is slice up some sausage links and you are ready to go. Plus all you have to do to cook it is to add 1 1/2c. water. I do mine in a freezer bag ziploc. Real good and super cheap (1 - 1.50$)

GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Soloist Cookset

May 13, 2009

Measured total Weight: 10.0 oz (283 g)
stuff sack, wash dish: 1.0 oz (28 g)
kettle: 6.5 oz (184 g)
cup: 1.5 oz (42.5 g)
lid: 0.9 oz (25.5 g)

Just to add, I have this set and found that for solo cooking it is quite big especially if you are going to ditch the "extras" and just go with the pot. I just got the Backcountry.com titanium 700ml pot for solo cooking and it is 3.7oz for the same price. Hope this helps.

Brunton Talon Canister Stove

Brunton Talon Canister Stove

Rating for this product: 3 May 13, 2009

Just got this in the mail today due to the fact that I lost my Crux and didn't want to shell out 50$ for another stove. Thought I would try this little guy and I have to say that for the price I don't think I can complain. Did a boil test with about 2 cups and it took roughly 1min 40sec in my living room. It is not the lightest out there but it seems sturdy and it is just small enough to fit into the BC 700ml Ti pot with a small 4 oz fuel canister. Not bad for 26 bucks. Will update after field test.

Vasque Mantra Hiking Shoe - Men's

Vasque Mantra Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 9, 2009

This is my first pair of true hiking shoes and they fit great right out of the box. Much narrower than keens which work great for my feet. Took these things on a 6 mile hike the day I got them and didn't have any hot spots. Good traction and grip, breathability seems good although the summer will be the real test. Opted to not go with the gtx due to price, weight, and lack of breathability. Downside: after about 2 days I realized that the insoles were crap. So I went and got some Dr. Scholls work insoles and now they are much better. I wear these as my work shoes in Hospital so I spend damn near 12 hours in these things standing and am quite comfortable. Get new soles and you won't regret it. Great buy.

Adventure Medical Ultralight & Watertight .5 First Aid Kit

Rating for this product: 3 April 29, 2009

what I like most about this is the waterproof case it comes in with the sil sack. Comes with the basics but I added a few more bandages and a few other odds and ends that I thing makes it a great little kit for a weekend or a week. Definetly add a small roll of duct tape around the tweezer bottle and always keep enough mole skin.

Snow Peak GigaPower Fuel 110 IsoPro

Snow Peak GigaPower Fuel 110 IsoPro

Rating for this product: 4 April 29, 2009

I wouldn't say that this is any better or worse than the MSR or any other brand. I prefer these due to the price especially when BC has a sale and the fact that they fit in the BC 700ml TI Pot.

Tip: Cut a piece of foam from an old sleeping pad to fit underneath the canister and you have yourself a nice little canister cozy that will keep it off the cold ground.

Backcountry.com Titanium Pot w/ Lid - 700ml

Rating for this product: 5 April 29, 2009

Everything about this pot is perfect. It is the perfect size for solo camping but could be pushed for two if you are just adding water to meals. This thing is so light and small that you will not even notice you are carrying it. It fits a small fuel canister with my Optimus Crux Lite stove perfectly along with a small bic, bandana, scrubby, and a small bag of baking soda for cleaning. Everything you need in one light package. Don't let the size fool you. Anything larger is just a waste of space. Great buy. Keep it up BC.

GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Soloist Cookset

GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Soloist Cookset

Rating for this product: 4 March 11, 2009

Have had this for quite some time now and it is really a nice little system. I can fit my entire cook system inside of the pot which really makes orginization a breeze. The pot is easily big enough for two people and the halulite seems to be holding up very well. The weight is a bit heavier compared to straight up Ti cookware but it is much cheaper and is very durable. Great cookset2 hikers, a bit heavy for 1 hiker but overall very versatile. I love it.

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

March 10, 2009

The biggest difference is that the Arroyo is 800 fill down and the hydrogen is 850 fill down. The hydrogen is a bit more compressible than the Arroyo but only by 1 inch in diameter and 2 inches in length. The down fill is defined as the amount of space in cubic inches one ounce of down will expand or loft up. So an 800 fill down bag means that for every ounce of fill the bag will loft up 800 cubic inches.

Can't beat the price and size

Optimus Crux Stove

Optimus Crux Stove

Rating for this product: 4 October 17, 2008

Just got this stove and have yet to field test it but so far I think it will do. Pros: tiny, you can fit this thing just about anywhere, doesn't quite fit under the 220 as well as I would like and will probly just thow it on top of the canister in my pot. The flame adjustment is great. Unlike others who say it is hard to adjust I would disagree, you can easily get this thing to simmer. Cons: no need to wast the time and ounces with the included carry case, top seems to be a bit wobbly and unstable, something I may be able to remedy with a quick tightening or whatnot, certainly not something I would leave unattended. Overall I am pretty happy with it. I'm guessing it will serve its purpose and be a part of my gear for a long time to come.

Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp

Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

Great headlight. You could easily go to a big chain store and by a piece of crap for twice what you pay for this. A lot of people have complained about the connection to the headband and how it might come off. I personally think that the connection is great, it can easily be transferred to your sternum strap of your pack if you don't like the headband deal like myself. Plenty of light and weighs nothing. Great buy!

GSI Outdoors Ultralight Soloist Cook System

GSI Outdoors Ultralight Soloist Cook System

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

I love this set. I don't think I could have found a more compact full cook kit for the price and weight. The pot is plenty stable on my tiny Optimus Crux. The insulated mug is great but it does hold smell a bit, have to give it a good wash at home. I certainly wouldn't use it for food, just eat out of the pot. It does serve its purpose for tea and coffee. The welded seam stuff sac is a nice addition but is probly more of a novelty than function. Overall a fantastic set. Would definetly buy again.
