Dynafit TLT Radical FT Binding

January 25, 2012

Ok everyone is going on about how these things are beefy and bad ass, Kudos Dynafit for getting this together. I want to know how they do on the way up. I currently use dukes on some volkl chopsticks and they do alright. Mainly I have problems traversing a steep slope when its icy or super hard. Partially I think this is caused by the skis tip and tail rocker but I also think it might be because of the width. The extra wide ski feels like it just overpowers the binding Causing it to flex side to side. So who has got these guys one something large like at least 120 underfoot? Let me know!

Volkl Gotama Ski

July 27, 2011

I have G3's On a pair of Chopsticks (bigger fatter volkls) and the only problem i had was the tails kept falling off. BUT never fear, G3 makes a twin tip adapter. http://www.backcountry.com/g3-twin-tip-connector-kit With these babys i never have to worry. I'm not sure if BD has a similar type of thing. One last thing. if you are trying to cut down on weight BD makes the 'tractor skin' which has nylon running down the center of the skin to cut down on material. I dont have these but it would be nice. A pair of skins for fat skis really start to add up!

Marmot Fulcrum Jacket - Men's

Marmot Fulcrum Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2011

This jacket is sick. Its super light and warm as hell. Literally. For skiing it is my 'if things go wrong' jacket. I originally bought it to replace my everyday jacket, but it is so warm that i cant wear it unless the temp is below 10 degrees F. That said, i love pulling this out of my pack when i get to the top of a climb and its just down right nasty out. As for fit I got a L. Im 6'1'' and 210 pounds. the jacket fits quite well. Plenty of room if you need to layer, please don't you will catch on fire. The bottom come about three inches below belt line. There isn't an internal hand gaiter like most ski jackets these days, but it haven't found that i miss them. All in all its a great jacket espcialy if you can snag it on SAC.

Stoic Welder Lo Softshell - Men's

Stoic Welder Lo Softshell - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2011

Really. The only major complaint i have is that BC.com didn't screw up the order and send me two. I have used this jacket for the second half of the ski season and it has preformed exceptionally in a wide range of conditions. Some things to remember tho:

LAYERING! I'm really surprised how many people say they get cold in this jacket and then go one to say, all i had was a cotton t-shirt on under it. I haven't been cold once while wearing this, but i normally have 1-2 base layers on.

FIT: I got an XL. I'm 210 pounds and 6'1'' This was a perfect size for me. It doesn't feel like a tent but i still can get a Sherpa fleece on underneath it with a thinner base layer as well. I have even thrown it on over my regular hoody and it somehow fit quite comfortably. The only thing that took some getting used to was the cuffs. They are small, meaning they are just bigger that my wrists. This could be a make or break for some people. I like it. it isn't constricting, but it keeps heat in and snow out.

Ok thats a lot of crap. really if you need a softie, this is a great one. If its on sac you would be stupid not to get it.

G3 Expedition Climbing Skin

January 17, 2011

Just get these http://www.wildernessexchangeunlimited.com/product_detail.cfm?CatID=122&PID=3159&SKU=8043&LinkID=1

It would take a lot of fiddling and replacing or parts. You need a different clip for the nose and tail, and im not sure they would be the right size either. Better off just going with ones that are made for it rather then buying these and turning them into Frankenstein.

G3 Expedition Climbing Skin

January 17, 2011

The rule of thumb is buy width that matches the fattest part of your ski. So in your case you could go with the 140mm... Buuut you might be able to get away with the 130, it all depends on how quickly the nose on your S7's shrinks down to the narrow part at the waist. If your ski quickly goes from 144 to under 133 (some do) you will save your self some cutting time.

Anywho, order for the widest part of the ski, and then start cutting. Unfortunately the cutting tool it comes sucks royal ball sack. Stop by your local shop, they might have an extra Black diamond one laying around... (i dont know why, they just work better)

Before you start cutting watch the vid. its five minutes long. and even though its for BD skins all the stuff they tell you will work for these. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY8rrEln4nc

Boom!

Red Trace II Helmet

Red Trace II Helmet

Rating for this product: 2 December 29, 2010

After trying on a lot of different helmets this is the only one that fit me well. I have a weird shaped head so these things take time for me. Also it was the only one that worked well so i'm kinda stuck with it.

Pros:

*Keeps my head warm without being to warm. Also the ear pads are removable which means that spring riding i can pull them out and stay cool.
*cheep

This is about where the good stops.

Cons:

*Google clip in the back will either break or fall out after the first good thrash you take. Without this piece your goggles will not stay on yoru helmet. I now wear my googles under my helmet :(
*Remember those removable earpads? Well they always fall out when i take the helmet off. And because they are nice to have out in the spring I haven't gorilla glued them back in.
*The entire Styrofoam protection disconnected from the hard plastic shell. This was and easy fix with some gorilla glue but until the fix it would rattle at high speeds (incredibly annoying)

So yeah. Look around and get something else... unless your stuck with this beater.

Volkl Gotama Ski

December 29, 2010

Do it! I have a similar setup. I have the chopsticks with Dukes. Love em. I spend equal time skiing them in back country and resort. Same settings. And they just rip. They release when i need them too and hold me in every other time. They hold up well too. This is halfway through the second season and i have zero complaints.

But one thing. If you are simply ducking the ropes and hiking less than half a mile of boot pack i dont think you need AT bindings. You will spend more time taking on/off skins and what not. Plus dukes are heavy. But if you want an at binding that lets you get up to the top and skis like a DH binding on the way down than you picked the right one. Aaaannnd a little weight will just make you a man :D

Bomber

Marker Baron 12 Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 March 1, 2010

These binders rock. Before you buy them ask yourself some questions.

How do I ski? Do i hit jumps or do i like to make turns.
How big are my skis? Are they noodles or am I riding two snowboards.
What type of touring am I going to do? Back country/slack country

So if you have a pair of fatties and you like to huck your meat your probably in the market for these guys. You wont have to worry about them breaking on you cuz you face planted off the drop, and they will release correctly when you beater infront of the group. Believe me, I have tested both of these situations.

As for touring they work well after a few adjustments:
*get some WD40 or tri-flow and grease the crap out of the moving parts. Especially the heal plate. Allot of snow/ice will build up in this area and it makes switching between walk and ski mode a pain in the ass. The tri flow will make it a breeze no matter the condition.
*The brakes were 110mm in width but they still needed to be bent. If you unscrew the two screws behind the heal piece it will slide out (towards the front) and you can throw it in a vice and hit it with a hammer... i mean bend it gently.

Lastly they climb well. They are really solid even in walk mode so you can stomp up some really steep stuff. Think about it this way, the added weight will just make you that much stronger.... you pussy.

Aaand the toe piece is universal! So you can click into dynafit or standard bindings! Boya!

Sherpa Adventure Gear Baans Tech 1/4 Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 1, 2010

I got it originally for a mid layer for skiing and it works great! Buttttt.... Its so nice that i ended up getting a second for around the city. (my first one smelling a bit funky now) Its got a small side pocket that work well for holding a key or a credit card, but feels like you have a tumor if its got something heavy in it (camera/wallet) Quality is comparable to TNF or Patagonia but it doesn't come with the +80$ price tag. Yay!

Why ski anything else?

Volkl Chopstick Alpine Ski

Volkl Chopstick Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 March 1, 2010

I'm 6'2'' got the 185's and i couldn't be any happier. You can ride anything with these. The rocker makes them whip around in the trees and the length gives you enough board to huck your meat and ride away clean, In any condition. Really these skis are just damn fun all over the mountain. So ask your self, "do I like to have fun?" if so get these. Damn, now i want to go ski.

A few notes:
*De-tune your tip and tail edges, but don't go as far back down the edge as normal, stat with only a slight amount and do more if needed.
*I mounted them dead center and I feel it was a good choice.
*If you haven't skied rocker skis give them a full day, you will have a shit-eating grin by the end trust me.
*Bring two pairs of pants on a powder day. You will crap your first pair.

Everything about these skins is easy. The tail clips stay snugly on my twin tips. They peel easy and go on quick. Cutting them to size was super easy too. If you have any questions goto the black diamond site and watch their vid. it will clear up any questions you have.

Grippy but needs some work

G3 Expedition Climbing Skin

G3 Expedition Climbing Skin

Rating for this product: 4 February 23, 2010

These skins grip like crazy. I used them for a straight week and had only one complaint. The tail clip tends to fall off. I have a twin tip ski and it seems like the clip is designed for a flatter tail. That said even with the clips falling off through the climb i still made it to the top with zero complaints. If I rig up a better setup ill re post. One more thing. When i went to cut the skins to fit my skis I found that their provided tool sucks. Luckily i had an old black diamond skin cutting tool that works great. If you plan on cutting your own, (its really easy) watch black diamonds video on how to do it. Its super short and tied all the loose ends together for me.

Garmont Xena G-Fit Alpine Touring Ski Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2010

Got these for my girl for our first back country trip and she loved them. She said it was like having wings on her feet. That said get them heat fitted at a good ski shop. You want to spend the time in there so there you get the right fit. Before heat fitting she could hardly get her foot in the boot. After that there was nothing but smiles. If you want a great boot for effortless hikes and ripping downhill snag it.

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2010

Got these for my lady as her first ski. Put some AT binders on there so we can get away from the lift from time to time and she hasn't looked back yet. They are super light (she has the 165's) and they float great in boot deep pow. For a first time ski i recommend them. The light weight and snappy flex makes them fun. She loves them!

Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 August 21, 2009

Got this for the girlfriend for our first camping trip together. Worked great. She slept like a log every night. The little amount of extra weight is totally worth it. Plus its amazing how well it self inflates. My therm is only 2 years old and I have to blow it up a fair amount, this one you let it sit for 15 minutes and in two puffs its perfect. One last thing the extra thickness lets you run it at a low psi and not feel any rocks. Get it!

Rating for this product: 3 August 21, 2009

I must be hard on things. Every review that i write ends with, works well but it broke. I got this bottle for backpacking because it was lightweight metal and the lid was compatible with my water filter. YAY! Unfortunately when fitting it into the side pocket of my girlfriends pack the side dented in. It was a tight fit but not that bad. Anywho the bottle still works it just now has a huge dent. She still uses it but I stick with my Nalgene. Cancer, what cancer.

The North Face Base Camp Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 13, 2009

I got these and the first day they were great. By the end of the first week I had to guerrilla glue one of the side straps back into place. Next week more guerrilla glue, different area. I have had these now for a month or so and i have had to do major surgery on them multiple times. I love the feel of them, and maybe i'm just hard as hell on flip flops? I'd recommend these to anyone who either doesn't try to do everything in flip flops or someone who doesn't mind doing a little shoe repair from time to time.
