NEMO Equipment Inc. Nano Tent 2-Person 4-Season

NEMO Equipment Inc. Nano Tent 2-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 1 June 16, 2009

This is my fourth single wall tent, The previous three were in order, the Kelty Aero, a Sierra Design solo tent, Black Diamond lighthouse and now the Nano. The overall design of the Nano with its attached vestibule appeared to be an improvement over the black diamond and in some ways it is. It is larger and the ability to switch between a three season to a four season tent shaves a little weight. There are however two major flaws. One, the grommets that the poles set into are covered with flaps making it a little harder to get the poles in place compared to the black diamond but you do get used to it. The major problem compared to the previous single wall tents is the condensation. With out a doubt the Nano is the worst. Granted I am a warm sleeper but this tent is the worst. First time out was a clear 55 degree night, sleeping bag was a kelty down 45 degree bag. Condensation on the sil nylon was excessive and the inside wall of the tent fabric was covered with condensation. Again this was a dry night.
Second time out was a three night trip same temperature range. First night was clear, condensation was the same as the previous trip, Second night it started to rain and continued to for the next two days, Condensation was so bad I had to place towels around the interior perimeter of the tent to absorb the water running down the walls and that was the first night of rain., by the third night water was dripping from the poles and dripping from the sil nylon through the no seeum mesh into the tent. Nemo claims that this tent was designed to maximize air circulation there for reducing condensation, Theory is great but they might want to switch to different fabric. Of the four tents I have mentioned the black diamond has held up the best with consistent but minimal condensation and I have had the black diamond out in all conditions from zero degrees in the winter to multi day down pours in the summer and never had this level of condensation. As for the Nano well it will be donated to the boy scouts maybe they will have better luck with it.

Excellent fit, comfortable and warm, not crazy about the snaps at the center and would prefer flat rear pockets, but that is just my taste. Overall great pants.

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2009

Picked this parka up on sale and glad I did. Yea the zipper can be a bit hinky but that is mainly because of the length, and the snaps on the hood could have been a zipper but those are minor. It's warm, light weight looks good for around town, and great for my winter backcountry outings. For the price, I am more than satisfied.

Not a bad boot

Timberland Cadion Mid With Gore-Tex XCR Membrane - Men's

Timberland Cadion Mid With Gore-Tex XCR Membrane - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 26, 2007

I had to return these because of a fit problem. The boot has a low volume foot area and the lack of padding behind the offset ankle grommet caused it to press into the ankle bone. Other than that the boot seemed to be well constructed . I would add I have a very hard foot to fit so for me this is not unusual.

Kelty Light Year Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Kelty Light Year Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 2 January 3, 2006

I’m an obsessive gear head and of all the gear I have purchased I would rate this bag at the bottom. It is roomy, and lightweight, and under ideal conditions probably would not be to bad. I backpack in late fall, winter and early spring. On the good side the bag is warm enough, and has plenty of room, however the problems I have encountered are: Pull cord for hood and chest are difficult to release, padding around the head is not all that comfortable, and chest cord cuts a crossed the chin or nose with no padding. Pray you don’t get any condensation drip in the tent as the outer layer sucks it up like a sponge and the down gets wet. Not good. Thankfully I had a liner. A water resistant outer layer, separate pull cords, and better padding around the face and chest would greatly improve this bag, also the draft tube could be larger. Guess it’s the old you get what you pay for.
