Great jacket, great price!

Columbia Ascender Softshell Jacket - Mens

Columbia Ascender Softshell Jacket - Mens

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2011

I got this jacket for christmas, so I've only worn it in the winter. It's not a winter jacket, obviously, but i've been able to wear it out in temps down to around 30 degrees with a couple layers underneath. Very good at repelling light snow that melts on your shoulders. The build quality of Columbia has always been really good, and the zipper on this jacket is solid and zips easy, which i really like. The inside of the collar is soft, too. You could definately use this jacket for spring, fall, and lighter/active winter season wear.

There's some size discrepancies on here which is my main reason for reviewing, I'm 5'9", 160lbs and i have a Medium. For reference, I'm a Medium in everything else I wear, Columbia or otherwise. This jacket has slightly more of a casual fit compared to the "athletic cut" tech-y jackets out there and it's on the *slightly* larger side of Medium if i were to speculate on such a matter.
So, if you're a Medium in everything else, get a Medium in this.

Anyway, I've got no complaints about it- get one, you'll dig it!

Very Good Spray

Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Spray-On Footwear Treatment

Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Spray-On Footwear Treatment

Rating for this product: 5 October 28, 2010

I have used this spray on my Vasque Breeze Low boots. They're more of a summer boot, but since I tend to wear them all year round, I was concerned about 1) hikes where there's snow at the top, and 2) salt in parking lots.

The spray was easy to apply, although I did notice that it turned the suede-y leather on my boots a little darker. However, I let it dry and the leather still has a soft touch- it didn't turn all hard from the spray. It may be a little darker still, but w/e... dirt is also a little darker.

As for performance, this Nikwax has worked very well through all the seasons. Snow does not stick or clump to my boots (preventing soak-through), and it's doing a good job keeping salt away, too. I'd definately recommend this to others, but just a couple of notes for you: 1) this is apparently for suede and nubuck leather only, not smooth leather, in case you've got one pair of each or something, and 2) as far as useage, I'd guesstimate in my opinion you could safely do two pairs of footwear with one bottle, or I suppose, the same pair of footwear twice.

Anyway, I'd definately buy this product again for my future boots, it's worth the $10.

Very Good

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 14, 2010

I wear a medium in everything I own (5'9", 150, 30/30) and I am usually a bit weary when the sizing of pants isn't 30-32, just in case I get fatter in the foreseeable future. However, I went w/ the size S as per the sizing recommendations, and the waist fit is very good and the length is also very good, if not a tad long. I'd say size S is a spot-on 30/30.

The material feels very thin, but it's held up very well so far. It's not stretchy, but it has just a little bit of give to it and it has been quite durable thus far through normal hiking use. The only sliding I've done on my butt is on snow/ice with them, so I can't attest to butt-sliding durability on gravel. They are also fairly windproof. The built-in belt is fine, and the pockets feel like they are placed kind of on the side, rather than towards the front like regular pants pockets but that did not interfere with use at all.

The thing I like best about these pants is that they move really ridiculously well while hiking up rocks and anytime I have to take giant steps and/or stretch out with my legs. They're absolutely comfortable, and I wouldn't think twice to buy another pair, even if it wasn't off of SAC at a discount. Buy.
