Mountain Hardwear Lodown Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Lodown Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 2, 2009

I bought this jacket in what I wear in the monkey man and boris jackets from MH so I assumed this would fit perfect in a med also. Well, it fit good in SOME places and bad in others. The sleeves were too short and the underarm seams chaffed my pits. The collar has a terrible, floppy, oversized design that lets heat dump out through your neck. However, the jacket will still keep you warm even with heat escaping out the collar, it has pit zips which are a great feature on a down jacket, and it doesn't look like your average down coat. If you are considering buying this jacket, I would size up.

The cons outweighed the pros for me and it was sent back as sizing up prob would have caused different issues.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 4, 2009

I would try a schmedium and see how that fits. Cheers!---------------------------At 5'7" 155 lbs, I fit into a medium very well and have the same chest size and waist as you do. I'm not sure how the larges fit in the waist and shoulders with this jacket, but because of this shoulder problem you say you have and the fact that your taller than I, you might want to lean toward a large as the medium was a perfect fit for someone smaller in height like me in the waist and the shoulders.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 4, 2009

I think you'd fit great into a medium. If you're using a lighter jacket as a layer you should still be fine but if you're going with something a little heavier I'd probably size up to a large. I have monkey arms so I have to buy jackets mostly according to arm length. This jacket will be just fine down in those temps with some layering. Great jacket! You'll really enjoy it.Hope that helps.-----------------------------------I agree mostly with Steve,If your wearing this jacket alone, get a medium as I'm 5'7" and 155lbs and I fit into a medium very well with a light layer underneath such as a thermal shirt. I have an athletic build (love the gym) and I noticed it very uncomfotable to fit a fleece (TNF Scythe and MH Monkey Man and both are light fleeces)under a medium as the neck becomes WAY too tight and the forearms are also very tight. So if your going to layer at all, I'd def go with a large. If your still not sure, find an REI as they carry the jacket.(this is how I found out)

The North Face Scythe Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Scythe Fleece Jacket - Men's

This jacket is awesome IF used under a shell (or something windproof). I took it out during a snow storm with a shell in 10 degrees and walked to a store about a half mile away and was kept very warm. I actually had to unzip the shell some because I got too warm! I still can't see this jacket being very functional during winter without some kind of windproof shell/jacket coupled with it as it lets even small breezes through. There are other options if you want a high warmth to weight ratio such as the MH Monkey Man and Arcteryx has its own version; both using the Polartec Thermal Pro material.

The North Face Scythe Fleece Jacket - Men's

I would say no because the zipper on this jacket has small metal teeth, not larger plastic ones seen on zip in compatible jackets such as the denali or even the nuptse vest.

The North Face Scythe Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Scythe Fleece Jacket - Men's

I haven't had this jacket for too long, but I can say that the wind TEARS through it and its not a great by-it-self jacket if your just watching friends rock-climb in VT while its 40 degrees out. I haven't tested it out when doing active things like skiing or snowboarding or even running. It does dry pretty fast though, its true to its size, and its very packable/light. I ordered a small and I'm about 5'7", 150lbs with a 38" chest and it fits very well although it can be annoying if you add too many layers underneath as it gets tight fast. The material used is VERY soft and it is a nice looking jacket.

I was expecting a miracle I guess when I got this thing and I only got an alright jacket. Still got some tests to run though....
