  • Stomping Grounds:

    Originally the U.P., now Chicago
  • Bio:

I originally hail from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (the U.P.), but now live in Chicago. It's pretty flat around here, but I usually make a few trips out West each winter (CO, MT, Tahoe) to at least tickle my massive pow itch. The mountain bike trails around here aren't the greatest, but the U.P. has some nasty single tracks that I always try to hop on whenever I'm up there. All in all, I just love being outdoors...I just need to move somewhere where everything is more easily accessible.

Skeptical about intense rain usage over 2-3 hours

Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 9, 2009

I've had this coat for over a year now (slightly different zipper designs) and it's served its purpose for moderate use. I've sat out at a ball game in a steady rain and stayed dry even though toward the end it started to look like the material was getting saturated (mainly shoulders of course). On warmer days, it does get a bit clammy even with the pit zips, but if you use it as a shell on cold windy days (skiing), it's great because it completely blocks the wind. The one thing that really annoys me about this jacket is the placement of the tag, hood strap, and hanger loop. With the hood down, these three things always either poke me in the neck or are exposed for the world to see. Stowing the hood doesn't look the greatest, either. Due to seam taping, it might be tough to relocate them, though, and still get the functionality. I got this for a great price and it's good for casual to moderate use around town or day hikes.

Light, snug, and clear

Native Eyewear Ignition Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Native Eyewear Ignition Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2009

I wear these on a daily basis whenever the sun is out. They fit a smaller face great, stay put when you're active (biking, running, digs in beach volleyball, etc), and they have never fogged up on me. They've seen mud, snow, sand, water, you name it and have held up great. Polarized is the way to go, too...takes away the unwanted glare. I'm very close to buying a second pair in the Mako/copper reflex combo (currently have cola/brown polarized), but want to see how the Triumphs fit first. If they're too big, I'm definitely going for another pair of these!

Native Eyewear Triumph Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

April 24, 2009

How would these fit compared to the Ignitions? The description mentions small-medium and the Ignitions just say small. I have the Ignitions and they fit great, but I want something similar to the Triumph style. I really like the moss/silver reflex combo too.

Arc'teryx Apache AR Zip - Men's

March 23, 2009

I'd go with the Large as well. I'm 5'6 and 150 and I went with a medium...the small was just a tad too short all around. The medium is maybe a little bigger than I'd like, but still an athletic fit on me. Given the size difference between us, I think the medium would fall short on you.

Size up, otherwise great!

Arc'teryx Apache AR Zip - Men's

Arc'teryx Apache AR Zip - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 4, 2009

I got this as a gift and couldn't be happier (gf got it on sale I hope!). Usually I take a small (5'6, 150lbs), but I had to return this for a medium so definitely size up. The medium fits perfect, though, and it layers great underneath my WindStopper fleece and hardshell as a mid layer. It's Polartec Thermal Pro so don't expect it to stop even the slightest breeze - that's not what it's made for. It will keep you very warm, though, when layered with a windproof shell. I highly recommend this if you don't mind spending the money for a quality pullover that'll really keep you warm.

Windproof, warm, and a great fit

Marmot Heat Shield Fleece Jacket - Men's

Marmot Heat Shield Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2009

This WindStopper jacket has lived up to my expectations so far. It completely blocks out the winter Chicago winds that seem to come from every direction and it keeps the heat in great. I've layered it with an Arc'Teryx Polartec Thermal and the combo has made it more than acceptable at temps down in the teens (plus wind) without being too bulky. The neck is a bit loose with just a t-shirt underneath, but I'd rather too loose than too tight. The velcro wrists aren't the greatest, but they get the job done. With the proper laying, I'm expecting to wear this a lot throughout the year. The fit is perfect for me, too...5'6 150lbs and got a small. I could easily layer it under a hardshell for the really cold or wet days. Getting it from backcountry on sale is making it well worth it, especially considering the already great quality that Marmot delivers at prices below other brands.

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Women's

October 10, 2008

I've seen two different versions of this coat - the older version is noticeably longer in the back and the newer version is pretty much the same length in the back and front. Does anyone know if only the discontinued colors are the older version? I tried that version on and didn't like the way it fit so if there's a way to tell the difference on here that'd be a huge help.
