First and foremost, I would call myself a runner. I love to run and try to race a couple times a year, anything from a 5k to a half marathon (tried a full once and don't plan on doing that again!).
I've gotten back into snowboarding this past winter and Brighton is my favorite resort. I'm looking forward to more snow and having another reason to play outside.

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Women's

November 9, 2009

It depends on what you plan on doing while wearing this jacket. Just standing around? Casual wear? Probably not (I wore mine over just a t-shirt to go shooting in 30-40 degree temps yesterday and was a little chilly after about 45 minutes). But if you're going to be running, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or something equally active, you'll be fine. This jacket really was built for more active pursuits (love the underarm stretch panels!), but with a shell could be just what your looking for in that temperature range.

Patagonia Micro Puff Hooded Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 8, 2009

I was kind of hesitant to get this jacket based on the flat picture above. I wasn't sold on the criss cross design, but I loved the blue color, so I decided to go for it. I'm so glad I did! I have barely taken it off since I got it. It is so light you almost forget you have it on. It moves with you very easily, is super warm, and is beautiful! The color is a deep, rich blue and the fabric has a bit of sheen to it. This jacket could very well become my everyday, go to jacket. I'm 5'6", 135ish and the medium is a little big on me, but I like being able to pull my hands in the sleeves and having room to layer.

This is my favorite new jacket for fall. It is amazingly light, has a great athletic fit that moves with you, and is so warm for it's weight. This is a new product from Arc'teryx and I really think they're on to something here. This is a piece no athlete who wants to play outside all year long should be without.

Rating for this product: 5 September 2, 2009

This shirt is such a workhorse in my wardrobe. I have worn it casually with jeans and boots. I have taken it camping. I have worn it cycling in the cooler hours of the day. I have worn it as an extra layer over a tank. This shirt is so pretty, fits so well, and looks so good on I have been nothing but impressed. I'm sure it'll get even more wear come winter. Get it. It's amazing.

The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket - Women's

July 30, 2009

backcountry.com has a very liberal return policy. Just hang on to your receipt/packing slip as there is a portion you will need to mail back with your return. As for sizing, I'd take a look at the size chart and keep in mind what you plan on layering under and/or over it. Someone a couple reviews down said they thought it runs true to size...

Lolë Victoria Halter Top w/ Convertible Straps - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

This is a great summer tank! The color (looks fabulous with tanned skin), the convertible straps (multiple styles), and the fabric (moisture wicking, stretchy, drapey) make this a winner in my book. It may run a little big. I'm usually a medium (5'6", 130-135, 34b) and the small fits me perfectly. It isn't super fitted, but I wouldn't say it looks like a maternity top. I still think it is pretty and flattering.

Nuun U Natural Hydration Pack

Nuun U Natural Hydration Pack

Rating for this product: 4 July 7, 2009

I hadn't used any Nuun products before and got the "variety pack" to try them out. I think the flavors are ok (chai is my favorite) but since it is a little tablet, the water can be a little gritty. But they definitely do the trick. I used to cramp up for hours after long runs and rides but since drinking this combined with Clifbar shot bloks, my cramping has almost entirely disappeared. I like that they don't have the sugar or calories of other sports drinks and will continue using them.

I love these things! I used to get terrible leg cramps after long runs and rides, but I've taken to eating these every 45 minutes and drinking water with Nuun tablets and haven't cramped up since. I have used these during half marathons, the Wasatch Back Relay and 2+ hour bike rides. Wouldn't leave home without them.

Isis Sport Brief - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2009

I have to say, I was not super excited about getting briefs, but I hate running in my regular cotton underwear, so I decided to give some "performance underwear" a try. I wore these while running two legs of the Wasatch Back Relay under CW-X tights and I was so comfortable! The fabric is very soft, very light and very breathable. They also stay put (might have been held in place by the tights, but still). I think the other customer who wrote a review may have gotten the wrong pair because mine were definitely briefs and definitely true to size. I usually wear a medium (5'6", 135-ish) and the mediums fit me great.

I was so glad to have this jacket while running the Wasatch Back Relay this year! My last leg of the race was in cold, windy, light rain and this jacket was my saving grace. I stayed warm and dry. I mean, I did sweat, but this breathes really well, and no rain actually got in. The reflective hits were also useful as I was running on the road. Love this jacket!

I got these just in time for the Wasatch Back Relay and wore them on my first leg of the race. The flat waistband is very flattering and since it's not all elastic, these don't ride up as you run. They were very comfortable and they are extremely lightweight. The liner is also great. I have them in black in a medium (I'm 5'6", 135-ish).

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2009

This is such an amazing piece! I have worn it as just a cute, casual shirt/jacket and I've worn it while running in the middle of the night during the Wasatch Back Relay race. The mesh underarm panels are my favorite feature, so nice to have the venting while maintaining the core warmth. I have the white w/orange zips and love the pop contrast. This is very stretchy material and while I'm usually a medium, the small fits me perfectly in this (I'm 5'6", 135lbs).

Stonewear Designs Movin' Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 3, 2009

I was a little nervous/skeptical of a nylon/spandex short, but after wearing these for almost an entire weekend, I'm sold. The fabric is much more flexible and forgiving than I expected. The fit is great for my body type (athletic) and I find they fit true to size (I'm 5'6". 135 and usually wear an 8)-the 8's fit perfectly, if not a tiny bit loose, which is fine, I like my shorts to sit more on my hips. I haven't measured the inseam but I'm going to guess it's around 5" or 6", great length for bumming around or doing yardwork.

Stonewear Designs Lyra Sport Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 3, 2009

I have to agree with the positive reviews that have been posted thus far. I have this tank in the midnight color and it is a beautiful shade of purple. The fit is great: snug and supportive on top (ps the internal bra is not your typical shelf bra. This one is not sewn to the sides of the shirt, which is great since that means it stays put no matter how much you lift, bend, or twist) and a little looser/flared out towards the waist- very forgiving and very flattering. I've worn this top moving furniture, working around the house, and mowing my lawn and I can't wait to try it out in a yoga class. I'm a 34B and the small fits great.

Rating for this product: 5 May 15, 2009

The first thing I noticed when I put this shirt on was how ridiculously light it felt. It weighs next to nothing and breathes exceptionally well. As a self described gym rat, I run a lot on a treadmill, but this shirt stayed light even when drenched with sweat. I've also worn it cycling and running outside and it has performed admirably in all situations. I have a medium, it's a tad too big. I'm 5'6", 130-135-ish.

CamelBak Sugar Hydration Pack - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 May 13, 2009

I'm not going to lie, this is bigger than I expected/originally wanted. I also don't read product descriptions very thoroughly because I didn't notice that this pack has an INSULATED SLEEVE AND TUBE. It turns out neither the size nor the extra insulation are bad things. In fact, I have been very happy to have my beverage of choice remain refreshingly cold on 2 hour+ bike rides. The extra pockets are tremendously useful for snacks and an extra layer. The main drawbacks in my opinion are all the straps and the length of the straps. They do come with little velcro ties to keep the excess in check, but it's still kind of weird. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.

GoLite Calamity Jane Skirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 April 23, 2009

This skirt is def. like running in a mini skirt. Out of the bag, it's a little static-y and not super flattering, after running for a bit it seems to mellow out. As I mentioned in an answer to a question below, the built in shorts do seem to ride/roll up if you're doing anything besides running, which makes this skirt not ideal for the gym. I'll still keep wearing it because it is flirty and functional when running, but there's definitely some room for improvement.

I got this shirt and pretty much love it. It has a great fit and the contrast hems and design on the side make it different from my other gym shirts. I don't esp. love the wider neckline, as my sports bra straps show, but other than that, no complaints. I'm 5'6", 130-135lbs and got a small.

Arc'teryx Easyrider Insulated Softshell Jacket

Arc'teryx Easyrider Insulated Softshell Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Easyrider Insulated Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 22, 2009

This jacket is everything I ever wanted in a softshell. The Polartec Power Shield shell does an amazing job of blocking the wind while the soft, fuzzy, fleece interior adds enough warmth and thickness to give this jacket a substantial feel. I have worn this jacket on its own and layered. I think it is thick and warm enough to just need a shell, layering it under something like down or another insulated jacket would probably be overkill (although it depends on where you're going and what you'll be using it for). The drop tail in the back is a really nice feature, keeping you covered when you reach and bend. As for sizing, I got a medium (5'6", 135lbs) but think I would get a small if I was planning on layering this under a tech shell, it doesn't seem to be as tight as some other Arc'teryx pieces.

Rating for this product: 4 April 22, 2009

They're rain pants, so I don't love them, but they fit well, are light weight and kept me dry on a bike trip where it rained for a couple days. The elastic is not super flattering, but it keeps the moisture out and makes these pants easy to get on and off over whatever else you're wearing. I am 5'6" 135lbs and got the mediums, which fit great over sweatpants or jeans, could have gone with a small if I was just planning on having baselayers or tights underneath.

prAna Serenity Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2009

This is by far one of the best sport tanks I've tried. I am relatively small chested, so don't need much in the support department, but the wide shoulder "straps" offered plenty of support for not only yoga, but also running. The fabric is substantial enough that I didn't feel exposed, even when the front of the shirt was soaked with sweat. Also, the v-neck is the perfect depth to look cute, but not be overly revealing when bending or leaning. It's length is also great, it overlapped just a bit with my low rise pants. I'm 5'6", 135-ish, 34 a/b and the small is perfect for me, snug enough to be supportive, but not so restrictive that I can't breathe.

prAna Stella Organic Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2009

This tank is beautifully executed. It is a perfect yoga top: stretchy and flattering, supportive and sexy without revealing too much. The crossover front makes it a little different from other sport tanks and the wider shoulder "straps" seem to make my muscular shoulders look more proportionate (tiny spaghetti strap tanks make them look bigger, in my opinion). This tank would also be great to wear for any other gym workout except massive amounts of cardio-being mostly cotton, it doesn't wick moisture, it absorbs it.

These pants have it all: fit, comfort, style. What more could I ask? The loose fit is universally flattering. The drawstring lets you customize the fit. The black color doesn't show sweat. The supplex/lycra material is not flimsy at all. I will be wearing these to yoga regularly, but also around the house. They might just be my new favorite pants! Under Armour UA Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 April 8, 2009

I really like the fit of this t-shirt and I liked the feel of the material before I washed it, but it ended up in the dryer with fabric softener and it got kind of crunchy. I have since invested in some sport wash and dry it without dryer sheets and it's ok again, but it is really high maintenance. Also, it's not the best at wicking and drying quickly. It is definitely a step up from cotton, but it still gets and stays drenched on long runs. Should be fine though for less aerobic activities or even running if you are going on a short run or don't sweat a lot.

Word on the street (or at least around the backcountry.com offices) is that Norrona is very high quality stuff that definitely holds it's own against other top brands such as Arc'teryx and Patagonia. Depends on when your cruise is and how warm you are naturally. I always advocate layers, esp. when traveling. Rating for this product: 5 March 16, 2009

The cut and fit of this shirt has made it my favorite out of the three Icebreaker Nature shirts that I own. The v-neck is very flattering and it is fitted without being tight. It layers very well under other Icebreaker or CW-X products. It is cute by itself with jeans or on a run or in the mountains. I have this shirt in the silk color and it is a beautiful, heathered purple/gray. I find myself reaching for it time and again. Icebreaker runs true to size in my opinion, I'm 5'6" 135-ish and mediums fit me perfectly.

Icebreaker Nature Delta Scoop Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2009

I have turned into quite the Icebreaker fan this winter. I love that Icebreaker has created baselayers that are as beautiful as they are functional. Nothing beats their quality of merino wool and nothing beats their fit, color, and design. The Nature collection is phenomenal and I now own 3 pieces and want more! This is definitely one of my favorites and a go-to shirt in practically every situation. I find Icebreaker items run true to size. I'm 5'6", 135-ish and am pretty much a medium in everything, and Icebreaker mediums fit me perfectly.

Icebreaker Nature Lite200 Vista Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2009

This is a beautiful shirt: beautiful color, beautiful design, beautiful fabric...and functional, too! Icebreaker's merino wool does not feel like wool at all, except for it's amazing insulating properties, but there is no itch whatsoever. I wear this as a casual shirt, but I could easily layer it under any other Icebreaker piece, sweater or sweatshirt.

CW-X Insulator Expert Tight - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 27, 2009

These tights are amazing. They have quickly become my go-to winter baselayer. I wear them snowboarding under snowpants and I wear them alone when I go out running. The support and breathability these tights offer have really impressed me. I have IT band soreness and the compression factor in these tights lessens the pain. I am 5'6" and 135-140lbs and wear the mediums. These tights are very tight and I was right on the border between sizes, but am glad I went up.

X-Bionic Energizer T-Shirt

X-Bionic Energizer T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

X-Bionic Energizer T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 24, 2009

I've tried so many products that claim to be able to wick sweat and keep athletes dry. None of these products have ever worked for me. Not Nike, not Under Armour, not Patagonia. I sweat. A lot. I can wring sweat out of my gym clothes after an hour of running. Salt crystals form on my skin when my sweat dries. So far nothing has been immune to the power of my sweat glands, nothing wicks my sweat fast enough to keep me feeling dry. And then I wore this shirt. I described it to my friends as magical. I wore the long sleeved version under an Icebreaker merino wool 1/4 zip on a 5 mile run around a city park last week and could not believe how dry both shirts were. Thinking maybe the cool (40ish degree) weather was responsible for my lack of sweat and not the shirt, I decided to test the short sleeve version at the gym. After a 7 mile tempo run on a treadmill I was impressed to experience basically the same results. Now I'm not saying the shirt was completely dry, but it did what it claimed to do: it stores a small amount of moisture near strategic parts of your body to help regulate body temperature. I am really impressed with the technology and fabrication of this shirt and would recommend this shirt to anyone who thinks they sweat more than the regular person.

CW-X Expert Tight - Women's

February 17, 2009

You fall into the medium category:http://cw-x.com/gr/products/womens/pu_size_chart/index.htmBut just to let you know, these tights are TIGHT. I'm 5'6" and 135-140lbs and I have the mediums and it's a struggle to get them on, but once you do, they are worth it. As for wearing them skiing, depends on how cold you get and whether or not your snow pants are insulated. CW-X also has the Insulator tight that is designed for cold weather use that I use for snowboarding.

Under Armour Base 2.0 Tights - Women's

February 16, 2009

I wouldn't recommend it. That's a lot of compressing going on and it sounds like it could be uncomfortable. The last thing you want is to cut off circulation to your legs in the cold.

Under Armour Base 3.0 Legging - Women's

February 16, 2009

We try to order "size runs" in every product so women of every size are taken care of. Sometimes certain sizes sell out faster than we anticipate and we are unable to reorder them as many manufacturers produce a limited amount of product (and sell to more retailers than just us). But there are a variety of heavy weight long underwear options, if you're willing to look at brands other than Under Armour.

DAKINE Camino Glove - Women's

February 9, 2009

Don't know about the Sequia's, but I have these and they do come with a thin liner. I actually wear the liners alone as around town-stick-in-your-pockets-just-in-case gloves. I thought the liners made the shells just a little too tight.

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Women's

February 3, 2009

Hopefully you have it by now, but for everyone else out there with a similar question, it depends on what shipping method you choose and how far away from Salt Lake City, UT you live. Everything ships out of Utah. When checking out and choosing a shipping method, there will usually be an estimated number of days in parentheses next to each shipping method. Usually the faster methods (next day and 2nd day delivery) will be more expensive.

Canada Goose Chilliwack Parka - Women's

January 30, 2009

Definitely not a small. I'm 5'6 and fluctuate between 135-140lbs and tried on the mediums at a tradeshow and they were great. It might be a little big through the shoulders for you, but you'll want the extra length. This is a bomber style jacket and by nature of that styling, a bit short. Hope this helps!

Zena Snowboard Bindings

Rossignol Zena Snowboard Binding - Women's

Rossignol Zena Snowboard Binding - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 January 21, 2009

These bindings obviously match up with the Zena snowboard for a beautifully coordinated package, but despite the coordinating color and design, they don't seem to match up functionally. These bindings constantly come loose. It might just be the screws, but I have to tighten them at least twice a day when I ride. I've ridden with the Ride Sigmas and like those so much better!

Patagonia R3 Jacket

Patagonia R3 Fleece Jacket - Women's

Patagonia R3 Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 15, 2008

I recently bought this fleece to replace my Patagonia retro x jacket that I misplaced at a restaurant a while back. I liked the thicker fleece of the Retro, but after wearing this for 3 days straight, I have to say I'm pretty happy with it. I wore it around town, snowboarding and to work. It has a fitted silhouette which makes it an ideal layering piece (wore it under a shell snowboarding). It is also much warmer than I anticipated (I ended up ditching the shell after a couple runs and was fine with just the jacket and an Icebreaker baselayer). It is very breathable and kept me warm and dry even though I was hiking back up the sledding hill after every run. It definitely earned it's stars for fit/looks, soft feel, and performance.

Icebreaker BodyFit260 Leggings

Icebreaker BodyFit260 Legging - Women's

Icebreaker BodyFit260 Legging - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 December 10, 2008

I wanted to love these, I really did. I have worn Capilene base layers for years and have been pretty happy, but after hearing friends and sales reps talk up merino wool, I decided to give some a try. Performance-wise, I am very happy. I wore these out snowboarding on a warmish day and they wicked my sweat away and regulated my temperature. As far as style and fit go, they are not my favorite. I call them my "Granny pants" because the rise and legs are so long. I'm 5'6" and I can pull these puppies up almost to my chest. I guess it's ok, the high rise kept my hind end covered when bending and falling with low rise pants, but I would have preferred them to be slightly lower and with a wider waist band. The skinny little thing on them pinches in just a little. I'm keeping them, but I did order the SmartWool ones as well. We'll see if those work out any better.

Icebreaker BodyFit200 Chakra Zip Top

Icebreaker BodyFit200 Chakra 1/4 Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Icebreaker BodyFit200 Chakra 1/4 Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 10, 2008

First of all, I have to say I am a sucker for the 1/4 zip tops. Love them. I have fleece ones, lightweight capilene ones, midweight capilene ones, etc...I decided I needed to try out the merino wool variety and settled on Icebreaker. This piece is great. The fit is amazing, fitted without being restrictive and the wool is so soft and smooth! I didn't give it five stars because despite all of the claims of being stink-free, after a day of snowboarding it definitely needed to be washed. Maybe I'm just stinky or the softshell I had over it kept my sweat from evaporating fast enough or maybe the synthetic shirt I had underneath was to blame...whatever the reason, it still stank. Maybe I'll try it on its own this weekend and see how that goes. I'd still recommend it, but know that you will need to wash it as much as anything else.
