Arc'teryx Bora 35 Backpack - 2136-2258cu in

September 22, 2009

i own the bora 80, and it has a hydration sleeve in the LID of the pack (which is annoying, because all the waterweight is up top - poorly balanced.)

is the bora 35 the same? (is the hydration sleeve in the lid, or does it run down the back of the pack, the way most companies design packs?)

thanks!

there are zippers on the underarm of the jacket that you can open, so you cool down your chest / armpits without having to get completely soaked from the rain.

WAY TOO BIG

Burton Tech Flannel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Burton Tech Flannel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 2, 2009

A medium in this shirt is AT LEAST a large in most shirts. Way too long, and the shoulders were way too wide. surprisingly, the arms were the perfect length, which suggests that it may be strangely proportioned for someone bigger than me.. otherwise: great feeling material. i have to send it back because of the size issue though.

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

January 26, 2009

how long are the "standard" poles when completely folded? Also, do the poles come with tip-covers? (I don't have a pack with external pole attachments, and I want to put the poles INSIDE my pack, but I don't know if they will fit, or if they will tear up the bottom, etc.)

Patagonia Down Jacket - Men's

January 16, 2009

it needs a shell if you want it to be in any way water proof. i mean, DONT wear it in rain if you don't have a shell.. and as for WHICH shell -- i don't think that there is a specific compatible shell, but more over, since it is a puffy down jacket, a nice and spacious hardshell (as opposed to form fitting) would probably be your best bet.

Patagonia Ultra Lightweight Endurance Ped Sock

Patagonia Ultra Lightweight Endurance Ped Sock

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

i often have a problem of excessively sweaty feet while hiking / sports. i bought these ankle socks, and was not disappointed! they are really light weight, and comfortable at the same time (unlike a thin pair of cheap cotton socks that you can buy at the store, which may be light, TOO thin...)
these did not disappoint! great buy.

Arc'teryx Accelero Pullover Top - Men's

Arc'teryx Accelero Pullover Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

this shirt is EXTREMELY light -- like a windbreaker, but more insulating. it is perfect for a fall hike. i don't use it much for layering, because i prefer stretchier material for a greater range of movement.. also, the fabric is extremely durable -- a couple times i basically battled my way through dense foliage, and this shirt doesn't have a single snag. Oh, and one last thing -- it is super compressible -- you can compact it into a tiny roll about the size of.. say.. a large cup.

not for bouldering..

La Sportiva Miura Climbing Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Miura Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 January 16, 2009

I pretty much exclusively boulder.. and these shoes are not great for that. they are not sensitive enough, and the heel fit strangely, so that it wasn't great for heel hooks... Also, there was some weird dead space in the front area of the shoe, right in front of the laces, probably because i had to tighten the lace part so much that the front of the shoe (which cannot be adjusted) bunched up. OK support though, for long routes i guess, if you are into that.

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's DO NOT USE

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 January 16, 2009

this is probably the most comfortable climbing shoe you will ever wear. they are full grain leather, so they WILL stretch alot over time. therefore, if you are looking for super high performance, get a size small, because they will stretch about half a size to a full size. HOWEVER, if you are looking for a high performance shoe, this might not be the best shoe to go for anyways, because it is a super-support giver, with basically no downturn and little sensitivity. not a bouldering shoe, if you will. good for long days on the rock -- you could go six hours without taking them off, and your feet probably still wouldn't be sore.. good job sportiva!

La Sportiva Katana Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Katana Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 January 16, 2009

amazing bouldering shoe. good sensitivity, good fit all around, especially the heel (never slips off on burly heel hooks..) my one complaint -- the toe rand on one foot began to separate after only about 2 months of 3 day a week / 3 hour a day climbing.. but my friend's pair has lasted him a good nine months, so maybe my pair was just a bad pair.. i know that la sportiva has these handcrafted, so maybe that's where some unreliability comes in..

comfortable but..

La Sportiva Mantis Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Mantis Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 3 January 16, 2009

these are super comfortable shoes, but they feel kind of cheap. i guess these are made in China(?) La sportiva doesn't usually do that, i think. They perform ok though - they are a mid range shoe, not super technical, but they will boulder ok (my friend beasts v8's with them, so there you go..) The thing is, i feel that for 80 dollars, you would be much better off with the evolv defy -- the MOST comfortable bouldering / "semi-technical" (meaning not super downturned, but still very sensitive) shoe EVER MADE!!!

first climbing shoe!

Five Ten Spire Lace-up Climbing Shoe

Five Ten Spire Lace-up Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 January 16, 2009

these were my first pair of climbing shoes. i think that these were a perfect choice for a first pair, because they functioned in every great way that a beginning climber needs -- they are comfortable, with some padding and a nice, supportive soul. in addition, the toe rand is pretty thick, so it lets you smear and really give the shoes a beating (the way beginners do, before they learn some freaking TECHNIQUE!!!) without destroying the shoe.. THE ONLY PROBLEM: they stretch! a full size, if you will! the full grain leather is misleading -- they began to stretch after a couple months of light (once a week) climbing, and after 9 months, they were about a size larger than when i bought them, and that was just about the time that i began wanting a SMALLER climbing shoe, as i became more accustomed to climbing shoes, and wanted a higher-performance shoe... still though, i was very satisfied. ALSO: they wash well! in the washer. cold wash. it will shrink them temporarily (a good 2 hours of sweaty feet will undo that though..)

not worth the $$$

Scarpa Thunder Climbing Shoe

Scarpa Thunder Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 2 January 16, 2009

these are way too expensive for the shoe. these shoes are not really good for any specific thing -- which is NOT what an experienced climber usually goes for... i mean, if you are a boulderer, these shoes are too stiff, and not downturned at all. on the other hand, they are not comfortable or stiff enough for a full day of climbing, if you are a route climber. for an experienced climber with a specialty, these are NOT worth the money. buy something more specific to your need! (Also, you should EASILY be able to find a good shoe for 110 dollars...)

after many other pairs...

Five Ten Galileo Climbing Shoe

Five Ten Galileo Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

after many other pairs of shoes, i've finally found the shoe that i am sticking with. My left foot has a rare problem -- while a very asymmetrical shoe will work perfectly on my right foot, it will cause my left big toe IMMENSE pain. these shoes are perfect -- they are not TOO asymmetrical, while still a high performance bouldering shoe. (all the other symmetrical shoes that i know of are beginner shoes, and i know ALOT of shoes, since it took me so long to find a shoe that wouldn't hurt...) Super durable -- onyx rubber is long lasting, and sticky! Perfect bouldering shoe. My favorite so far (after trying about 10 different pairs of shoes climbing, and countless others in stores..)

sensitive

Evolv Bandit Climbing Shoe

Evolv Bandit Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 January 16, 2009

these shoes are good for people who can handle a narrow, asymmetrical shoe, because that is what the bandit is. good sensitivity for bouldering, and the heel stays on well. the lace up design is nice too, because when you pull the top laces, it tightens the shoe all the way down. not super technical (downturned) though. A good all around shoe.

COMFORT

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

these are some of the most comfortable bouldering shoes i've ever tried on. they are GREAT for the gym, and good outdoors too. They are super thin and sensitive, and i've seen them from V0 to V8 climbers. The only thing -- they are pretty thin (adding to the sensitivity), so if you are really rough on shoes (lots of smearing, etc.) then these may wear out fast.. evolv rubber simply CANNOT compete with fivetens...

Evolv Pontas Climbing Shoe

Evolv Pontas Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

this is a great bouldering shoe. it is very thin and sensitive, and pretty durable (although i have yet to find an evolv shoe that is as durable as a fiveten..) the material is nice -- it barely stretches at all, even after months of climbing. my only complaint, which i'm pretty sure is universal for ANY strap up shoe, is that on a big toe hook one time the metal loop that the strap goes through dug into the top of my foot.

they need to fit right..

La Sportiva Venom Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Venom Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 3 January 16, 2009

these shoes need to fit pretty much exactly right, because otherwise you get strange dead space, and that is NOT what you want in a slipper (since they are not adjustable..) so if you have never tried on a pair of these, then DONT BUY ONLINE (unless you don't mind paying a bunch of shipping costs if they don't work out). these shoes are super technical, a great bouldering shoe. definitely not a route shoe though - if fit right, they are super downturned and tight and would HURT to leave on for long periods of time.

Sorel Caribou Boot - Men's

Sorel Caribou Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

these have been around for YEARS and years, and they've barely changed a bit. and for good reason. They are super warm, super waterproof, and all around just the best boot for everyday use. They are NOT a very technical boot -- long walks might get tiring, simply because they don't lace up very tight, to give a performance fit (like a mountaineering boot, for example) but for everyday use / outdoor work / short hikes, etc. they are FANTASTIC!!!

not a warm weather sock...

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Sock

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Sock

Rating for this product: 4 January 13, 2009

this sock, while extremely comfortable, is not exactly a thin warm weather sock. it is considerably thicker, and i often suffer from the problem of sweaty feet -- this sock is not helping. i am reserving it for colder days (although not snow, since it is an ankle sock.)

if you are looking for a cold weather short sock, it is probably ideal. also, sizing is about right. i am an 8.5, and i ordered medium. it just fits.

Big Agnes Iron Mountain Air Sleeping Pad

Big Agnes Iron Mountain Air Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 January 13, 2009

the description is inaccurate: this pad folds down to SMALLER THAN A NALGENE. it is really incredible, actually. SUPER LIGHT pad, super compact, and most importantly: super comfortable. i'm a side sleeper and a very light sleeper, and its hard to get to sleep on foam or foam-air pads, but this is great. after trying this pad out at REI, i decided that i had to buy it. of course, backcountry had it at half the price...

my best jacket

The North Face Mountain Light Jacket - Men's

The North Face Mountain Light Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 13, 2009

this is my best hardshell jacket. the goretex is unbeatable - it's my snowboard, rain, and general cold day jacket. it has some pretty cool features, like a malleable metal wire running along the upper edge of the hood, so that you can shape the hood to keep it out of your eyes no matter what the condition (glasses, goggles, etc.)

i only have one complaint: this jacket is not very form fitting, which is sometimes a problem when i'm racing down hills snowboarding.. (this season, after 10 years of snowboarding, is the first time i have had this problem.. probably because i'm pushing about 60mph on my board these days..)

but i guess if you want form fitting, you lose some layering capacity. so great jacket, anyways.

Rating for this product: 3 January 2, 2009

i bought these sandals after reading a few reviews that said that they start out uncomfortable, and then stretch and get more comfortable. not the case with me -- i owned them for about a month, and got some blisters, but figured that they would stretch soon. however, they didn't, and i eventually returned them. otherwise, very cool looking. one more thing: the arch is in a funny place.. but maybe that is just specific to my feet.

otherwise, it seemed to be constructed really well. it also seemed VERY warm.. i had to return it because of the mis-fit.
